BLANCA LI NOS HABLA DE ROBOT, SU NUEVO SHOW EN BAM BROOKLYN

La coreógrafa y bailarina española Blanca Li se encuentra de visita en Nueva York presentando su nuevo espectáculo ROBOT, un ballet en donde humanos y robots bailan e interactúan. Para Blanca Li este nuevo trabajo es una 'reflexión' sobre el rol de la tecnología y sobre la apreciación de las asombrosas facultades humanas.



Nos encontramos con la artista y su equipo, incluido NOW uno de los robots, en el Instituto Cervantes y allí nos conversó sobre su proceso creativo.  ROBOT se presenta en Nueva York en el Brooklyn Academy of Music. 



La fascinación por la tecnología es el motor detrás de la obra de Blanca Li y esa fascinación empezó aquí en Nueva York en sus días de estudiante. Su nuevo ballet ROBOT fue inspirado 'por la vida misma': su cercanía a la tecnología y sus potenciales.

La coreógrafa y bailarina española Blanca Li nos presenta a NOW, uno de los robots que participan en su nuevo show ROBOT. 


NOW nos dió una demostración de sus dotes de bailarín. Nos bailó parte de la coreografía del show en el teatro del Instituto Cervantes de NYC.

Blanca Li se refirió a su nuevo show como una 'reflexión' sobre, primero, lo increíblemente complejo del cuerpo humano y, segundo, sobre la posibilidad para el ser humano de desarrollar, eventualmente, sentimientos hacia un robot capaz de expresarse a través del arte. El show lo integran bailarines humanos que interactúan y bailan con un grupo de robots. 
En un encuentro en el Instituto Cervantes, Blanca Li nos ha dejado entrar un poco en su proceso creativo y lo trajinoso del proceso de preparar semejante show donde humanos y robots comparten el escenario. La tecnología sigue siendo el fuerte de Blanca Li quien ya no puede imaginarse, nos dice, un día sin ella. Muchos coincidimos. :) 
El tema de los robots se have más y más un discurso público por su alcance y su influencia en la dinámica económica y social. Blanca Li añade sigue añadiendo la dimensión del arte y la creatividad a esta conversación.

Este fin de semana es, literalmente, la última oportunidad de ver algunas de los mejores muestras de arte centradas en talento latino con temas tan importantes como el cambio climático, la influencia del arte en la arquitectura y diseño de América Latina y la primera retrospectiva de la artista venezolana Marisol. 
El Greco y la celebración de los 400 años de su genio también está en Nueva York, asi como también Francisco de Goya, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Salvador Dalí y Paul Cézanne. Todos ellos han dominado el escenario artístico neoyorquino desde comienzos del otoño y seguirán haciéndolo hasta mediados de Enero y comienzos de Febrero. Por ahora, no se pierdan la oportunidad de disfrutar de cerca las obras maestras que cierran este fin de semana, Enero 11.

Focusing on the tradition of grotesque humor throughout the history of Spanish cinema, The Last Laugh: An Alternate History of Spanish Comedy series comes to the Film Society from December 12-18. The series will include appearances and Q&A's with directors Santiago Aguilar, José Luis Cuerda, Isaki Lacuesta, and Óscar Pérez.

Ramón Salazar, Spain, 2005, 35mm, 112m
Spanish with English subtitles
Adolfo (Mónica Cervera) goes by the name Marieta, works as a prostitute, and suffers from narcolepsy, habitually nodding off and slipping into Ginger Rogers–esque dreams in which everything is colorful, musical, and happy. In these dreams she is her fully realized female self, not Adolfo as the official registries would have it. Somewhere in between queer comedy, musical, and a grotesque portrait of the darker side of Spanish society, 20 Centimeters is a distorted and unfettered depiction of a still-chauvinistic country where fears, beliefs, and prejudices endure and where one’s sexual orientation seems to be everybody’s business.

People bursting forth from the ground, black children born of white parents, and Spanish civil guards shooting at the breaking dawn while shouting “damn the whole sacredness bit to hell!”: Amanece, que no es poco might seem to be an incoherent jumble of sequences, but in fact it is one of the high points of Spanish comedy. Valle Inclán’s distortedly grotesque “esperpento,” Francisco de Goya’s darkest, most biting humor, and Luis Buñuel’s surrealist derisiveness all go hand in hand here under the unifying mantle of satirizing a country that is capable, in the words of critic Álvaro Arroba, “of murdering and divesting of their sacrosanctity its most sacred of gods.”

A 40-year-old junkie decides to follow a psychiatrist’s somewhat absurd list of dos and don’ts to the tee in order to kick his habit and become a “normal person”: be clean, be neat, eat right, clean your house, go shopping, socialize. But in doing so, he finds he has become a nobody, just another face in the crowd. When a 16-year-old girl comes into his life, like an astronaut who has fallen to Earth from out of nowhere, he suddenly gains the love, attention, and care that will rescue him from deadening conformity. Directly engaging taboos without prejudice or moralizing, Santi Amodeo constructs a story on and about the blurred lines of normalcy: in a society where we must adapt ourselves to a host of mores and norms, who is truly the Other, the oddball, the astronaut?

When Carles Mira premiered his first film, The Prodigious Life of Father Vincent, in Spain, someone attempted to prevent it from screening by detonating a bomb in the theater. Spain was emerging from a dictatorship and working its way, for better or for worse, toward becoming a democracy. Far from flinching, Mira upped the ante and filmed Caution to the Wind, taking his iconoclastic passion for festivity to the extreme. Focusing on an insane asylum through which all types of characters parade, Mira constructs an irreverent flashback view of Spain’s past—or as he himself puts it: “I’m convinced that a number of people have taken an interest in concealing our real past and that they invented, at the time, a make-believe empire peopled by heroes and leaders comprising a gallery of ghosts.”

Though Vicente Lluch has somehow faded from Spanish cinema history, his eventual rediscovery is inevitable. He directed only three features over the course of a 40-year career, but his films reveal a campy take on uniquely Spanish subjects astonishingly achieved amid the Franco regime. In The Certificate, he draws on the Mediterranean farce (as Carles Mira would later do) in order to hurl scathing criticism at the ethically reproachable and socially ridiculous Barcelona bourgeoisie. As in his other work, the story hinges on a strong, determined female character who grows increasingly empowered as it goes on.

Five desperate, common citizens from a fictitious country pretty much identical to Spain see their lives ripped apart by a global financial crisis. With nothing left to lose, they concoct a crazy plan to save their country’s—not to mention the world’s—economy: kidnap the chairman of the Central Bank and demand that he somehow restore everything to the way it used to be. Is their plan so naïve that it just might work? A dark and rowdy comedy about a country pushed to the economic brink and the everyday radicals who endeavor to save the day by any means necessary. But will their revolution be televised or will it be Googled?

Justino engages with Spain’s vast tradition of black comedy, brimming with backwards glances and allusions to its rich heritage. If the film at first seems like a simple rehashing of Marco Ferreri’s The Little Coach, it soon becomes clear that its references extend in many different directions, engaging such distinct works as Edgar Neville’s 1946 detective thriller The Crime of Bordadores Street and Fernando Fernán-Gómez’s 1986 Goya Award winner Voyage to Nowhere. Justino takes full advantage of its having been made after the end of the censorship restrictions of the Franco regime, and the creative duo La Cuadrilla (directors Santiago Aguilar and Luis Guridi) revive the figure of the retired man that appears in The Little Coach and Luis García Berlanga’s Not on Your Life.

Francisco de Goya’s Fight with Cudgels depicts two men submerged, knee-high, in the ground, beating each other with wooden clubs. It’s neither here not there that Goya didn’t originally paint the figures this way, but rather on grassy ground; this image, the result of the oil painting’s negligent conservation, has nevertheless become a metaphor for Spain’s eternal cycle of fruitless conflict. Álex de la Iglesia’s film, which earned Best Screenplay and Best Director at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival, returns to this idea of a violent and self-destructive Spain in the guise of circus clowns dueling for the love of a gorgeous trapeze artist.

* The Last Horse / El último caballo

Edgar Neville’s The Last Horse is considered the most neorealist of all his works. But while it’s true that some of the more obvious aspects of that movement show through, this film is no mere throwback. Its humorous, thought-provoking thrust directly engages with the way things really are in Spain, specifically in Madrid, which, swept along by the changes wrought by modernization, sheds its traditions rapidly and thoughtlessly. The Last Horse is a stroll through Madrid on the brink of a makeover that changed both the city’s outer appearance as well as the lifestyles of those who live there—in particular Fernando, recently discharged from the army, which has decided to put down his faithful horse Bucéfalo.

Trini takes care of her family, just like the other women in her depressing, working-class neighborhood, but she believes her situation is temporary. Soon enough, something or somebody will get her out of there.

* The Little Coach / El cochecito

Spanish with English subtitles
Marco Ferreri filmed his first three features in Spain before returning home to Italy. For the first (The Little Flat) and third (The Little Coach), he partnered with Rafael Azcona, a screenwriter also making his debut; the collaboration between these two would be crucial for shaping some of the fundamental traits of Spanish black humor. The Little Coach portrays the trials and tribulations of Anselmo Proharán, a retiree willing to do anything, even do away with his family, in order to get himself a mobility scooter like those owned by his elderly cronies at the park. Although censorship under the Franco regime took some of the bite out of this film and imposed upon it a moralistic ending, it could not repress the harshness with which it depicts a distressful country.

We don’t know how documentary filmmaker Germán first met Juan, but we join them as they watch a bullfight on television. Out of the blue, Juan asks Germán to help him carry out an act of vengeance…

* Mommy’s a Fool / Mamá es boba

Martín (Jose Luis Lago) is a self-conscious young boy living in a provincial Castilian town where nothing ever happens. He bears the brunt of his classmates’ bullying at school, but his biggest problem is his parents, Gema and Toribio, whose grotesque behavior certainly doesn’t go unnoticed in their sad, gray hometown. But when a new TV station arrives and offers Gema the position of lead anchorwoman, everything changes. Gema and Toribio’s fame skyrockets, but given their status as the town’s laughingstocks, they end up being treated like traveling carnival puppets, and Martín is ostracized ever more severely. Produced on a shoestring budget, with a visual style accentuating the cruelty of its content, Santiago Lorenzo’s satirical feature debut is a comedy that evokes both raucous laughter and smiles of recognition.

Not on Your Life marked the second time that Luis García Berlanga and Rafael Azcona worked together, following 1961’s Plácido. This film is a no-holds-barred portrayal of three characters fighting to survive brutal situations. Amadeo is an executioner on the verge of retirement who meets José Luis, a funeral parlor employee he tricks into becoming his heir. Step by step, this film reveals the old man’s Machiavellian plan that finds José Luis literally dragged into becoming his successor despite his ethical reservations.

Don Pepe Popi is a collaboration between Venga Monjas—two comedians who started out on the Internet in 2006—and Carlos Vermut, a director who put a new twist on interweaving genres with his films Diamond Flash and Magical Girl.

The cliché goes that beautiful flowers bloom in cemeteries… or amid rubbish. People in Places illustrates this bromide with an episodic succession of sketches of daily life in a desolate, crisis-ridden Spain. Shot sans script and with a cast comprised of more than 80 actors, People in Places is a comedy with bitter undertones painted in muted colors, intertwining the grotesqueness of Spanish “esperpento” with the cultural pastiche of David Lynch while taking Franz Kafka on a stroll through the industrial suburbs of any provincial town, all with a refreshing absence of pretension.

Jorge Tur’s feature-length documentary delves into the legend of a 16th-century bandit from the north of Spain, who robbed the rich to give to the poor. But the film winds up being a reflexive portrait of documentary’s inability to focus on anything beyond the visible, as well as a tragicomic stroll through a land whose wounds are seemingly always fresh.

Spanish with English subtitles
Symbols of its imperialist past, Spain still has two cities in African territory: Ceuta and Melilla. Filming the host of a local television show that broadcasts the various religious events that comprise Holy Week in Melilla and employing the stylistic tools of cinema verité, Óscar Pérez envisions a portrait of Spain’s essence as manifested by a city forsaken by the mainland.

ARTE: DICTATORS ARE 'ALWAYS SHAMELESS'. EUGENIO MERINO IN NYC

Pareciera que tenemos otra epidemia de dictadores y 'salvadores' en el mundo. Cuando uno creía que la razón, el progreso y la historia nos habían elevado a otro nivel de convivencia.... Siempre los hemos tenido, claro, pero fíjense en la tendencia mundial, América Latina por ejemplo: Presidencias que se están convirtiendo en vitalicias y autoritarias. Egipto, Rusia, Turquía, Siria. El triunfo de la derecha en las elecciones europeas y de Podemos en España, bebé del chavismo venezolano. El Tea Party y los Republicanos, comenzando con Bush II e incluyendo aquí a los 5 miembros de la Corte Suprema, están empeñados en llevarnos a situaciones cada vez más caóticas de gobierno y de dominio por el 1% sobre toda la sociedad.

Conversé con el artista Eugenio Merino en la Galería UNIX, que muestra su obra. Me contaba que levantó mucho polvo en España cuando presentó la primera pieza de lo que es ahora Always Shameless: La cabeza del dictador Franco en una nevera con el logo de la Coca-Cola. La reacción no se hizo esperar. Los fantasmas ( y los no tan fantasmas) del franquismo aún impiden al país ibérico enfrentar su historia y la obra de Merino es un recuerdo brutal de esa cita histórica por siempre postergada.



De allí se hizo lógico poner en el congelador a cuanto dictador y político que se extralimite y así, en Always Shameless, nos encontramos cara a cara con Chávez, Castro, Putin, Bush II y Kim Jong-Un.


La muestra Always Shameless ( Sin Venguenza o Sinverguenzas ? ) es, sobre todo, una meditación sobre nuestra relación con el poder y sobre la viabilidad de una sociedad que renuncia a la razón, a la autodeterminación del individuo, al respeto a la ley y la libertad para someterse a la bota militar o al capital salvaje.


Sociedades oprimidas están destinadas al fracaso. Sociedades libres al triunfo. Cada dictador en su cava de Coca-Cola simboliza una gran oportunidad perdida nuestra, para avanzar como civilización. Te pone a pensar. Thought Provoking.

ARTE: BERNARDI ROIG'S THE MIRROR in NYC.

Spanish artist Bernardi Roig's solo exhibition: THE MIRROR (exercises to be another), has just ended at Claire Oliver Gallery in NYC. If you couldn't make it to the gallery, here are some shots I took several days ago. 
With a series of new sculptures and charcoal drawings, the artist continues the exploration of man's anxiety to belong, unfolding for the viewer an unsettling experience with his obsessions.


Roig confronts the actions we take based on outside pressures and influences, and those images in our heads which we are unable to explain to others through our known human faculties. The Artist's new works labor under a shadow of two key queries: how does one confront iconic imagery which is still relevant, and how is it possible in a world overflowing with images, to create a new and lasting image, an image that pushes us to the edge of what is possible. 


Deeply influenced by literature and film, Roig’s work has followed a path swayed by narrative and a theatrical concept of plastic space. See the slideshow below or follow the link > Roig.

CELEBRANDO LOS 30 AÑOS DE LA FERIA DEL LIBRO DE MIAMI

La Feria Internacional del Libro de Miami cumple 30 años y se establece como el festival literario más grande de los Estados Unidos. Como en años anteriores, más de 300 escritores y más de 300,000 amantes de los libros se reunen para una celebración de la palabra escrita hasta el 24 de Noviembre. El país invitado es España y la celebración es especial ya que este año se celebran los 500 años de la llegada de Ponce de León a la Florida por lo que el Príncipe de Asturias y su esposa fueron los encargados de la apertura oficial de esta edición de la feria que incluye lecturas de libros, mesas redondas sobre temas de interés actual, conversaciones con autores, exhibición de libros y eventos para todas las edades. España traerá una veintena de autores a la feria.
El evento central de la Feria es el Festival de Autores, un programa de lecturas y discusiones que se extiende por toda la semana con la participación de escritores de todo el mundo. Este año algunos de los confirmados incluyen Dan Brown, Margaret Atwood, Al Gore, Barbara Kingsolver, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Ralph Nader que presentarán en inglés; y Jorge Edwards, Francisco Santos Calderón, Esmeralda Santiago, Jaime Bayly, Soledad Puértolas, Jorge Eduardo Benavides, José Ovejero, Gioconda Belli y Javier Calvo entre otros autores hispanohablantes a los cuales se les dedica el Programa de Autores Iberoamericanos (en español).


Miles de estudiantes del Sur de Florida participarán en la Feria al Aire Libre y, para los más chicos, la Callejuela de los Niños, que incluye teatro, artes manuales, cuentacuentos y lecturas de autores de libros infantiles. Este año regresa la Galaxia de Historias Gráficas, con un taller de caricaturas y presentaciones el fin de semana de renombrados novelistas gráficos e ilustradores. La Feria del Libro es producida por The Center for Literature and Theatre del Miami Dade College.

DRESSING THE SCREEN: COSTUME DESIGN IN HOLLYWOOD

The Museum at FIT has a couple of fantastic exhibits going on now: RETROSPECTIVE and A Queer History of Fashion. It also has a series of talks with leading world designer like this event on DRESSING THE SCREEN: COSTUME DESIGN IN HOLLYWOOD.
Yvonne Blake and Deborah Nadoolman Landis, two of the most celebrated costume designers, get together to talk about their careers in film.  Academy Award winner Yvonne Blake (Spanish) dressed film legends such as Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Sean Connery, Robert de Niro, Marlon Brando and Al Pacino in dozens of films of the likes of Superman, Fahrenheit 451, Nicholas & Alexandra, Jesus Christ Superstar, Looking for Richard and The Three Musketeers.



Dr. Deborah N. Landis, an Oscar nominee, designed Michael Jackson’s Thriller and curated the 2012 Victoria and Albert exhibition, Hollywood Costume. A signing of Landis’s two most recent books will follow the presentation.

Justo a tiempo para revivir algunas pesadillas de infancia!. El Anthology presenta una serie de 10 días dedicada al cine de horror/terror español realizado del 1967 al 1976, llamada aquí su época de oro.

For a decade (1967-1976), Spain terrorized the world, cinematically-speaking. In the waning years of the Franco dictatorship hundreds of horror films were released, all of them characterized by their eroticism, violence, and unrestrained cinematography. Almost unintentionally, these movies provided an x-ray of a sociologically fractured country. Produced with miniscule budgets and under trying circumstances, the Spanish horror movies of that time were seen for years as a curious anomaly. Four decades later, the films directed by (the recently deceased) Jess Franco or starring Paul Naschy have developed a deserved cult following on both sides of the Atlantic.
Showcasing eleven classics of Spanish horror cinema, this series has been curated by Francisco Javier Pulido Samper, the author of the 2012 book, “The Golden Decade of Terror Cinema in Spain”, for which he interviewed Franco, Naschy, and numerous other key participants in this grisly, disreputable, but unforgettable genre. Beginning the night before Halloween, this extensive survey will bring these films’ hosts of vampires, werewolves, zombies, and psychos back to life, for two terror-filled weeks!

“Estrada: Sailing through design” is an exhibition structured around the graphic designer Manuel Estrada’s visual diaries, which he uses to register his working process including ideas, perceptions and first sketches. The exhibition’s goal is to reveal not only Estrada’s specific creative process but also the steps that any design project may involve. The show takes us from first ideas to final designs, guiding us through the stages in between where concepts and shapes change until reaching the most adequate conceptual, contextual and formal result.
“Estrada: Sailing through design” is also a journey through Spanish culture. Mainly devoted to corporate identity and editorial design, Estrada has worked for some of the most significant cultural institutions and companies in Spain. Through his designs we encounter the writers, institutions and events that are at the core of contemporary Spanish life.

CINE: 'LOS AMANTES PASAJEROS' EN CARTELERA.

En la última del realizador español Pedro Almodóvar veremos lo que el mismo ha calificado como la película más gay de su carrera. Los Amantes Pasajeros es una comedia super refinada que usa todos las imágenes que se han usado en el cine para tratar el tema gay. En una serie de 'bocetos', Almodóvar explora la sinrazón de muchos de nuestros prejuicios y dificultades sociales. La verdad me pareció que lo tomó un poco muy en serio y que la película pareciese que hubiera tenido más efectividad si la hubiese hecho tiempo atrás.

A technical failure has endangered the lives of the people on board Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could be summarized in two: sex and death.

A Palo Seco's third New York City season at Theatre 80. Artistic Direction & Choreography by Rebeca Tomas. Musical Direction by Pedro Cortes. A Palo Seco is a New York based Flamenco Company described as "awesomely fiery" (New York Times) and "a feast for the eyes and the ears" (Theater Online). The company has been acknowledged as an up and coming voice in the U.S. Flamenco community for its artistic vision deeply rooted in Flamenco tradition, yet relevant in a modern urban context. They are gaining national recognition, appearing at the 2012 Chicago Flamenco Festival, along with artists such as Raimundo and Diego Amador and at Jacob's Pillow 80th Anniversary Season. Led by artistic director and choreographer, Rebeca Tomas, and musical director Pedro Cortes, their productions feature traditional Flamenco repertoire combined with the company's penchant for an innovative and edgy New York City feel.

VELAZQUEZ DE VISITA EN EL MET MUSEUM DE NYC

El Retrato de Francisco I d'Este, una de las pinturas menos conocida de Velázquez, estará por primera vez en los Estados Unidos en el Museo Metropolitano de Nueva York  hasta el 14 de Julio. La pintura estará en exhibición como parte de la nueva re-instalación de la Colección de 'Old Masters' del museo.

Among the most distinctive portraits by Diego Velázquez is one he painted of Francesco I d'Este (1610–58), the Duke of Modena, during the duke's visit to Madrid in 1638 to secure the support of Philip IV. The duke is shown in armor, wearing a red sash, his head turned toward the viewer. It is a work that conveys a quality of arrogance and sensuality, and is a high watermark in the history of baroque portraiture, while also illustrating the importance of Velázquez's portraits to Spanish diplomacy. In 1843 the painting was acquired by the Galleria Estense—one of the most prestigious of Italy's regional museums—in Modena, Italy, and it has never before been lent to an institution in the United States. This special, three-month loan coincides with the re-installation of the Metropolitan's collection of Old Master paintings. It not only makes accessible to an American public one of the least known of Velázquez's works, but also calls attention to the severe damage suffered throughout the Italian region of Emilia Romagna after a devastating earthquake in May 2012. The Galleria Estense has been temporarily closed due to the damage it sustained.

Si tomamos el arte contemporáneo como una forma de exploración de la infinita complejidad del mundo, un modo de aprehenderlo y comunicarlo, podemos interpretar el trabajo de los doce artistas de Cantabria que integran esta exposición como una cartografía de nuevos imaginarios, nuevas conciencias y cosmovisiones. Que tienen en común y que resuelven sus obras a partir de la inclusión de diversos materiales: referencias a la historia de las artes, documentos relacionados con su experiencia vital o relecturas y ensamblajes de imágenes de variada procedencia.

Picasso Black and White, the first major exhibition to focus on the artist’s lifelong exploration of a black-and-white palette throughout his career, will be presented at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, February 24 - May 27 after it was presented at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. The exhibition features 118 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from 1904 to 1971, and will offer new and striking insights into Picasso’s vision and working methods. This chronological presentation includes significant loans—many of which have not been exhibited or published before—drawn from museum, private, and public collections across Europe and the United States, including numerous works from the Picasso family.

DALI EN EL POMPIDOU

Esta es la segunda exhibición que el Centro Pompidou le hace a Salvador Dalí, una de las figuras más complejas y prolíficas del arte del siglo XX. La primera muestra se realizó en 1979-1980 y ésta, que estará abierta hasta el 25 de marzo en París.


Con más de doscientas pinturas, esculturas y dibujos, a los que se suman películas, fragmentos de programas de televisión y fotografías, se expone en esta ocasión además la obra del pionero del happening, autor de obras efímeras. Entre las grandes obras expuestas, los visitantes podrán volver a descubrir algunos de los mayores iconos, como el famoso cuadro del artista La persistencia de la memoria, más conocido como Los relojes blandos. Este préstamo excepcional del MoMA se une a una selección de grandes obras seleccionadas para esta retrospectiva gracias a la estrecha colaboración desarrollada con el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía de Madrid, y la participación conjunta de la Fundació Dalí de Figueras y el Dalí Museum de Saint-Petersburg, Florida.

Dalí ha sido criticado por su afectación, su pasión por el dinero y sus provocadoras opiniones políticas, pero es, a la vez, uno de los artistas más controvertidos y más populares. Esta exposición en el Pompidou pretende aclarar además toda la fuerza de su obra y todo aquello que ésta debe a su personalidad, tanto a sus rasgos de genio como a sus excesos.
A Dalí le gustaba mezclar arte y ciencia. Su famoso método paranoico-crítico, fundado en el delirio de interpretación, pretendía apropiarse de todos los ámbitos de la creación y el conocimiento a fin de «dalinizar» el mundo. Este gran manipulador de los medios consideraba el arte como un hecho global de comunicación. En todas sus facetas, Dalí cuestionaba la figura (persona) del artista frente a la tradición y el mundo.

Con esta nota comenzamos a cubrir más eventos importantes en el ámbito Latino nacional e internacional. El Prado de Madrid se presenta en Houston con lo mejor de su colección de obras maestras que cubren 400 años de historia y que están representados por sus artistas más importantes: El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo, Paret, Van der Hamen, Meléndez, Goya, Vicente López, Federico de Madrazo, Rosales, Fortuny o Sorolla, además de autores extranjeros como Tiziano o Rubens que trabajaron en España o influyeron directamente en su pintura.

A través de tres grandes capítulos, Retrato de España: Obras Maestras de El Prado cuenta el recorrido de la pintura española resaltando sus características políticas, sociales y de desarrollo artístico. Un primer capítulo coincide políticamente con el Antiguo Régimen y con el Siglo de Oro de la cultura española; el segundo periodo abarca el último cuarto del XVIII y la primera mitad del XIX, una época “crítica”, con vaivenes importantes en las mentalidades, en la organización política y en las formas de relación social; y, por último, el tercero, abarca los últimos cincuenta años del siglo XIX, en los que se asistió al nacimiento de la España moderna. CINE : SALMA HAYEK en 'AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT'

Roberto (famed Spanish comic José Mota) once had a promising careers in advertising. But now out of work during the economic downturn, he struggles to keep his family afloat and their dire situation a secret from his adoring wife Luisa (Salma Hayek). 


After yet another dead end interview, it seems like reality will come crashing down on Roberto – until a freak car accident places him at the center of a wild media storm. Realizing his opportunity, Roberto hires a brazen agent to help him leverage his new found fame into fortune, but Luisa begins to worry about what lengths Roberto will go to for his family’s security.
The new film from beloved cult director Alex de la Iglesia goes into fresh territory for the daring director, a dark comedy/social satire that also works as a deeply felt drama about the devotion of a husband and father. A wild riff on manhood in the modern media world, As Luck Would Have It is a skewed take on the strange world we live in.

FUENTEOVEJUNA EN EL REPERTORIO

La obra está basada en hechos reales ocurridos en la ciudad española de Fuenteovejuna (actualmente Fuente Obejuna) donde una población entera tomó la justicia en sus propias manos y asesinó a su cruel gobernante. Cuando un magistrado visitó la ciudad para investigar lo sucedido, los pobladores respondieron diciendo: “Fuenteovejuna lo hizo”. El director transportará la obra a la actualidad situándola en una corporación moderna.

ENTREVISTA A LA CINEASTA PAULA ORTIZ

La directora, guionista y productora ejecutiva Paula Ortiz está en Nueva York para presentar su película en el Spanish Cinema Now, ciclo de películas españolas que se emite en el Lincoln Center del 7 al 16 de Diciembre. Concretamente su película pudo verse el 7 y el 9 de Diciembre y esperamos que pronto se estrene oficialmente en los Estados Unidos. Estuvimos con ella para que nos contara cómo se hizo y qué le aportó De tu Ventana a la mía.

Qué te aporta esta película? 

Aprendizaje vital a todos los niveles. Desde el nivel creativo, técnico, empresarial y económico que implica el cine hasta el humano, psicológico o de resistencia personal. El cine es un arte colectivo, si cualquiera de las personas que forma parte del engranaje falla, la película es diferente. Yo como directora tengo que mantener el criterio llevando el barco y también hay decepciones y desengaños en el proceso.

Qué es lo más complicado? 

Una de las cosas más difíciles es armar la financiación. Hemos tardado casi cinco años en llevar a cabo la película porque era muy pequeña en términos de producción. En este tiempo la película cambia, se necesita paciencia y respetar los tiempos y el proceso.

Llega un momento en que la película toma vida propia? 

Totalmente. Al principio tiene unas ideas y emociones que quieres contar y controlar. Pero la realidad se impone y la película adquiere su propia carne, mirada, lugares, atmósferas, universos. Igual no son las que habías pensado pero muchas veces son mejores. La película respira.

Qué simboliza para ti la amapola? 

Para mi es un símbolo de las mujeres que habla la película. Flores muy delicadas que si las tocas o las cortas al instante se marchitan. A la vez es una flor que crece en cualquier parte, en los lugares más inesperados. Las mujeres de la película son amapolas que crecen en las grietas de la vida.

Tuvisteis mucho problema para encontrarlas, verdad? 

Cuando rodamos ya no era primavera y el equipo de dirección artística recorría campos en busca de amapolas, pidieron a china unas que resultaron no ser amapolas, hicieron otras con papel de seda, pegaron pétalos de amapolas secas… fue muy complicado.

La película tiene mucho de ti misma, sientes tu intimidad invadida? 

Es raro. La película esta hecha de historias muy personales. De historias que conozco, de mujeres que he conocido, paisajes que son muy míos de mi infancia y familia. Hay mucha gente que opina bajo criterios mercantiles y reducen la película, las emociones y tu vida a cuatro cosas. Puede llegar a ser doloroso, desgasta y a veces sufres. Por otro lado es el ejercicio que creo tienen que realizar los narradores, honestidad, contar con tu voz las historias que tú has vivido, tu mundo.

Que proyecto es el siguiente? 

Uno es una tragedia muy visceral, muy fuerte estamos en los momento de crisis y surgen las tragedias porque son historias que te llevan al límite, a la catarsis, a volverte a hacer las preguntas fundamentales. Es dura pero creo que necesario.

Una de las preguntas es si las normas que nos hemos impuesto funcionan. Qué es más importante la norma social, la ley o el deseo, lo que realmente tu corazón tu alma y tus vísceras te dicen. 

En el llamado séptimo arte, “no se pueden decir las cosas hay que verlas, sentirlas y vivirlas”, cree Paula. Las herramientas que utiliza son la luz, el color, las acciones, las miradas para crear unos ambientes perfectos. “El valor estético no es solo el cuidado por lo bello, para mi tiene un valor ético, por lo que comunica por lo qué quiere decir, cómo y desde dónde lo quiere decir”, concluye la directora.
