Our mission is to discover, follow and promote the best in Latino Culture. As a 57 million strong community in the US, Latinx are an integral part of the fabric of this country. Our diversity and vitality are becoming more and more obvious. The challenges and possibilities, too. Covering such a community takes time, dedication and funds. What I started as a small personal project needs to keep growing. The amount of work is significant and we can do more, but we need to create revenue streams that allow us to grow. In that context we are starting our first donor campaign!.
More time and resources are needed to keep publishing and covering the Latino community and I wanted to reach out and ask you to become a partner, a donor, a 'socio', with a one time or a monthly contribution.

Los cuartos de final de la Copa América Centenario ya comenzó con el triunfo de la Selección de Estados Unidos sobre la Selección de Ecuador con un marcador de 2x1. Nuestra selección se mide ahora al ganador del partido entre las selecciones de Argentina y Venezuela!.

Los realizadores Latinos no solo trabajan al sur del Rio Bravo, también los tenemos aquí en los Estados Unidos!. Ha sido una larga trayectoria, desde que tengo memoria, allá en el 1999 cuando comenzaron a surgir festivales como el New York Latino International Film Festival dedicados a mostrar la naciente industria nacional junto con lo que nos venia del mundo latino fuera de nuestras fronteras (La revista SHOUT, de la que era -quien subscribe- socio y Publisher, fue uno de los patrocinadores del festival).
Ahora todos podemos apreciar la vitalidad y la innovación que caracteriza a nuestro cine nacional a través de programas impulsados y apoyados por organizaciones como Cinema Tropical (celebrando sus 15 años!), varios estudios cinematográficos además de varias casas de distribución.
Y aqui entran los Premios Cinema Tropical cuyos ganadores se anunciar án este 20 de Enero. Las 5 nominadas a los Premios Cinema Tropical como la Mejor Película Latina de Estados Unidos a son:

 * El Club (The Club) de Pablo Larraín se estrena el 5 de Febrero (estreno limitado). 

 * Friend with Benefits: Anthology of Four New American Filmmakers. Los 4 cineastas son Gabriel Abrantes, Alexander Carver, Benjamin Crotty and Daniel Schmidt. En la Film Society del Lincoln Center del 5 al 11 de Febrero.

 * Dance On Camera. Incluye trabajos como 'Bajarí' de Eva Vila (Catalunya/España); 'Dance with Them' de Béatriz Mediavilla (Canada) y 'Disportrait' de Alejandro Alvarez &Ulrik Wivel (Dinamarca).  * El Abrazo de la Serpiente (Embrace of the Serpent) del colombiano Ciro Guerra y nominada al Oscar como Mejor Película Extranjera estrena en NYC el 17 de Febrero en Film Forum y Lincoln Center Plaza. En Los Angeles estrena el 19 de Febrero y después a nivel nacional.

 * Death Is My Dance Partner: Film Noir in Postwar Argentina: Esta es una mirada al Cine Noir argentino durante los años del Peronismo (1949-56) y continúa un programa iniciado el año pasado con Mexico at Midnight: Film Noir from Mexican Cinema’s Golden Age. Del 10 al 16 de Febrero en el MoMA.

* El Festival Cinema Tropical presentará los ganadores de la 6ta Edición de los premios del mismo nombre en el Museum of the Moving Image del 25 al 28 de Febrero.

 * Tetralogy of Frustrated Love de Manoel De Oliveira se presenta también en la Film Society del Lincoln Center del 25 al 28 de Febrero.

 * New Directors/New Films Festival se realiza del 16 al 27 de Marzo. Co-producido por MoMA y la Film Society del Lincoln Center.

 * La Calle de Los Pianistas del argentino Mariano Nante se presenta en The Americas Society el 15 de Marzo.

 * VIVA de Paddy Breathnach se estrena en NYC y Los Angeles el 29 de Abril (nueva fecha). Producida por Benicio del Toro.

* JOY de David O. Russell con Jennifer Lawrence y el venezolano Edgar Ramírez como el Latin Lover está en cartelera.

Y hay mucho por hacer. Documentar la ascendencia de la minoría más poderosa en la historia de los Estados Unidos, su cultura, sus metas, sus retos y sus triunfos en todos los quehaceres del conocimiento, no es cosa de un día para el otro y toma tiempo y dinero. Podemos hacer más si nos ayudas!.

THE FEMALE VOICE IS CENTERSTAGE AT THE HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FEST

La 'Voz Femenina' ( The Female Voice) ocupa lugar prominente en el Festival de Cine de Human Rights Watch que se celebra hasta el 21 de Junio en la Film Society del Lincoln Center y el IFC Center. 


Estos Trabajos Documentales de excepcional calidad como Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution; Beats of Antonov; What Tomorrow Brings; Trial Of Spring; No Land's Song (ganadora del Premio Nestor Almendros) y Burden of Peace, resaltan la centralidad del rol de la mujer en cada sociedad y los continuos ataques a los que aún es sometido ese rol, llamando a un compromiso más productivo que muestre verdadero progreso en temas tales como el derecho individual de existir y expresarse como tal, de la mujer, sin importar ni religión, ni clase, ni casta. El Human Rights Film Festival nos da otra oportunidad de reafirmar nuestro compromiso por la igualdad y los derechos humanos de todos, sin fronteras ni soberanías que favorezcan la impunidad total.
Otro de los temas que podemos profundizar en el festival es el referente a las libertades civiles e individuales contra los abusos gubernamentales, brutalidad policial, espionaje, corrupción, violencia y terrorismo. Así tenemos documentales como (T)error; Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution; 31/2 Minutes, Ten bullets; The Yes Men Are Revolting, Burden of Peace y (T)error.

 The 3 Latino themed docs are: 

 - Burden of Peace (Joey Boink, Guatemala- Paises Bajos): La lucha de Claudia Paz y Paz, una mujer luchando contra los grupos de poder y la corrupción en Guatemala.

  - Life is Sacred (Andreas Dalsgaard, Dinamarca):
La candidatura de Antanas Mockus en Bogotá y su meetodo de campaña contra la violencia y el poder hacer una nueva política en Colombia.

 - (T)error (Lyric R. Cabral y David FelixSutcliffe, US): La historia de Shariff Torres que pasó de Black Panther a FBI informant y una mirada cercana a los abusos gubernamentales, el espionaje doméstico y la libertad de expresión.

CINEMA VENEZUELA LANZA 1era EDICION EN MIAMI

La creciente diáspora venezolana ha hecho de Miami su capital cultural por la diversidad y las posibilidades que ofrece al talento venezolano. Ahora, la ciudad está a punto de incorporar a su calendario cultural CINEMA VENEZUELA, el 1er Festival de Cine hecho en el país suramericano. 
El nivel conseguido por el cine venezolano recauda, cada vez más, acólitos y premios internacionales. Solo en el 2014 se estrenaron unas 40 películas en el país, algo nunca visto. Por esto, Cinema Venezuela no podría llegar en mejor momento. La muestra es un sólido showcase no solo del mejor cine contemporáneo venezolano, sino de lo mejor del cine hecho en Iberoamérica. Disfruten, Cinema Venezuela en el Koubek Center del Miami Dale College del 14 al 17 de Mayo.

La muestra incluye:

 1- Azul y no tan Rosa, de Miguel Ferrari. Ganadora del Premio Goya a la Mejor Película Iberoamericana.
2- Pelo Malo, de Mariana Rondón. Ganadora de “La Concha de Oro” en el Festival de San Sebastián 2013.
3- Liz en Septiembre, de Fina Torres.  
4- Papita, Maní, Tostón, de Luis Carlos Hueck. Una historia de beisbol que rompió records de taquilla en Venezuela.
5- La Distancia Más Larga, de Claudia Pinto. 
6- Dos de Trebol, de Orlando Rosales y Jessica Wenzelmann.
7- Nena, salúdame al Diego, de Andrea Herrera Catalá. 
8- Esclavo de Dios, de Joel Novoa. 



Todas las películas que integran la muestra serán presentadas en su idioma original, con subtítulos en inglés.
Cinema Venezuela se presente en el Koubek Center del Miami Dale College del 14 al 17 de Mayo.

Este 31 de Marzo celebramos la vida y el legado del ícono Latino César Chávez y, además de todas las actividades programadas en su honor, este año tendremos la oportunidad de conocerlo más de cerca con el estreno de la película de Diego Luna sobre la vida y la obra de nuestro ícono Latino.



A través de los años, la figura y la obra de César Chávez ha ido creciendo hasta el punto de considerársele una de las figuras centrales de la historia reciente de nuestro país junto a figuras como Martin Luther King, Jr. y Rosa Parks, para mencionar sólo a dos de ellos. Como trabajador jornalero y activista de derechos civiles, la obra de César Chávez ha traído bienestar, justicia y prosperidad a millones de trabajadores en los Estados Unidos.  Hoy, a pesar de todos los avances, millones de trabajadores del campo y de la ciudad (muchos de ellos sin documentos legales) siguen marginalizados, abusados y mal pagados. Millones siguen anónimos para la mayoría. Hoy, más que nunca, el legado y la lucha de César Chávez continúan. 
Más allá de ver la película como un posible éxito taquillero o en camino al Oscar (No he visto la película y las opiniones que he leído son variadas), esperamos que podamos ver, usando las palabras del propio César Chávez, a "gente ordinaria, haciendo cosas extraordinarias". 
Lo que comenzó en Delano, California, continúa hoy en todos los campos, en todas las fábricas, en todos los negocios, en cada rincón en donde exista discriminación, abuso y violaciones a los derechos civiles de millones de compatriotas. Como bien lo entendió César Chávez, "no se puede oprimir al que ya no tiene miedo."

ARTE: 5X5 REAL UN REAL

The Venezuelan American Endowment for the Arts (VAEA) continues building bridges with art between our two countries. This year VAEA brings 5X5 REAL UN REAL, the 4th edition of its signature exhibition 5X5, to Downtown, NYC.
5X5 REAL UN REAL combines the work of five artists from Venezuela and five artists from the United States whose works travel to both countries along with them and their curators. 


In New York City, the exhibit will take place at the One Art Space Gallery in Tribeca. Opening Night is November 7 from 6 - 9 pm. Exhibit on view: November 7 - 30.

NY ESSENTIALS : CINEMA SUMMER 2013

Un poco de cine para ponerlos al día en la riqueza visual y narrativa del cine hecho por Latinos tanto en los Estados Unidos como en Latinoamérica y Europa.

It is impossible to give a complete overview of current trends in Latin American filmmaking in just 10 days; the amount of rich work being created right now is too vast. Instead, think of this edition of Latinbeat as a sampling, mostly by emerging filmmakers—only a handful of them have showcased works here in the past. Most striking about this recent crop of films is the number of co-productions between multiple Latin American countries, which speaks of an expanding exchange of ideas and sense of identity within the region. Yet this widening collaboration is just one part of a continued effort to make possible startling, defiant, innovative and beautiful storytelling, despite often limited resources.  This year’s lineup also includes the previously announced retrospective of filmmaker, Matias Piñeiro, who will screen his films THE STOLEN MAN and THEY ALL LIE during the festival while simultaneously theatrically opening VIOLA and ROSALINDA at the Film Society of Lincoln Center on July 12th.

In the new comedy by Pedro Almodóvar, a very mixed group of travelers are in a life-threatening situation on board a plane flying to Mexico City.
A technical failure has endangered the lives of the people on board Peninsula Flight 2549. The pilots are striving, along with their colleagues in the Control Center, to find a solution. The flight attendants and the chief steward are atypical, baroque characters who, in the face of danger, try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. Life in the clouds is as complicated as it is at ground level, and for the same reasons, which could be summarized in two: sex and death.

In 1968, there emerged from Detroit a charismatic Mexican-American singer/songwriter named Rodriguez, who had attracted a local following with his mysterious presence, soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. Searching for Sugar Man tells the story of the greatest '70s US rock icon who never was, how he was rediscovered in South Africa and finally became the legende he always deserved to be. A story of hope, inspiration and the power of music.

As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

Matías Piñeiro is one of contemporary Argentine cinema’s most sensuous and sophisticated new voices. In his latest film, Viola, he ingeniously fashions out of Shakepeare’sTwelfth Night a seductive roundelay among young actors and lovers in present-day Buenos Aires. Mixing melodrama with sentimental comedy, philosophical conundrum with matters of the heart, Viola bears all the signature traits of a Piñeiro film: serpentine camera movements and slippages of language, an elliptical narrative and a playful confusion of reality and artifice.

On a trip through Chile a boorish American expat named Jamie (Michael Cera) and three Chilean brothers plan to set off in search of the prized San Pedro cactus and its promise of beachy hallucinations. But in the previous night’s drunken stupor Jamie invites a free- spirited fellow American (Gaby Hoffmann) along on their mescaline-driven road trip, and her devil-may-care worldview gives them more of an adventure than any of them had bargained for.

This new omnibus film, a remarkably successful example of a famously cursed form, brings together short films by four renowned and legendary filmmakers – Aki Kaurismäki, Pedro Costa, Víctor Erice, and Manoel de Oliveira. Though unified by a common theme – the producers asked each filmmaker to take their inspiration from the Portuguese city of Guimarães, the European Cultural Capital for 2012, and in particular to reflect on “the stories the city has to tell” – these four short films are radically different from each other. Sandwiched between two relatively light films (Kaurismäki’s typically dry and delicate TAVERN MAN and de Oliveira’s uncharacteristic foray into the explicitly comic, THE CONQUERED CONQUEROR), are Costa’s dark, claustrophobic, and deeply disquieting SWEET EXORCIST (starring his perpetual muse, Ventura, and marked by his usual ravishing command of digital video), and Erice’s fascinating, beautifully structured documentary study of a shuttered textile factory, BROKEN WINDOWS. As a whole, CENTRO HISTÓRICO encompasses four unique and varied perspectives on an ancient European city, as well as demonstrating the thrillingly varied range of sensibilities of these visionary filmmakers.

Isadora, an octogenarian living comfortably with her husband and two cats, suddenly finds herself fighting a battle on two fronts when the onset of dementia arrives at the same time that her daughter’s attempt to scheme the landlord seems to require that Isadora sign over the lease on her Santiago apartment. Unfolding with black humor and empathy in equal measure, the film emphasizes both the confusion in Isadora’s psyche and the claustrophobia of her domestic landscape. A hit at the Cannes and New York film festivals in 2010, this is the film’s long-awaited theatrical run in the U.S.

Winner of Special Jury Prizes at BAFICI (Buenos Aires) and Locarno, and a highlight of the New York Film Festival, The Student charts the political awakening of a student at the University of Buenos Aires. In this tense and shrewdly observedbildungsroman, a brilliant successor to films like Jean-Luc Godard’s Tout va bien (1972) and Krzysztof Zanussi’s Camouflage (1977), the apathetic yet seductive Roque (Lamothe) is drawn into the campus intrigue of warring student political parties, and finds himself torn between two competing impulses: the radical idealism of his girlfriend, a teacher assistant, and the realpolitik cunning of his mentor, a retired politician turned professor. Screenwriter-director Mitre, who has written award-winning scripts for Pablo Trapero and Walter Salles, makes his feature film debut with a sophisticated and subtle meditation on the still-unhealed wounds of Argentina’s Dirty War, and on the clash between old-guard Peronists and a younger generation of leftist activists in Buenos Aires today.

A highly unusual historical film that takes a meditative, nearly non-narrative approach to portraying the experiences of those who continued to resist the Mexican government’s anti-Christian (especially anti-Roman Catholic) persecution, even following the official end of the Cristero War in 1929. Devoted to the cause, despite their increasing desperation and fatigue, and their yearning to rejoin their families, this band of rebels – whose genuine religious faith and spiritual innocence is apparent despite their paradoxical embrace of armed struggle – trudges exhaustedly through the hills and mountains of rural Mexico, experiencing moments of grace and beauty amid the violence and suffering.
