CIRO GUERRA NOS HABLA DE EL ABRAZO DE LA SERPIENTE EN ENTREVISTA EXCLUSIVA! Por Alex Guerrero.
Nominada a los Premios Oscars como Mejor Película Extranjera, El Abrazo de la Serpiente es un homenaje, una celebración monumental a las culturas amazónicas existentes y a las ya desaparecidas. Ciro Guerra ha dirigido una película que es un poema dedicado a 'aquellas canciones que ya no serán escuchadas', a un mundo que pocos entendemos y a una cosmología diametralmente diferente a nuestra visión dualista, maniqueista de la cultura occidental. Filmada en blanco y negro, con una extraordinaria fotografía, Ciro Guerra nos hace maravillar y replantear muchas de nuestras creencias con respecto a la vida, la naturaleza y lo que llamamos realidad. También es un proceso de auto-conocimiento, nos dice, de lo que significan nuestras raíces indígenas: rechazadas, alienadas, amenazadas y eliminadas desde el comienzo histórico de lo que hoy es Colombia y, por extensión, las Américas.
En esta entrevista nos adentramos al mundo amazónico de la mano de su director que nos relata lo que significó para el realizar El Abrazo de la Serpiente, cómo lo cambió y lo que hacer cine significa para él.
El Abrazo de la Serpiente se estrena en NYC el 17 de Febrero y el 19 de Febrero en Los Angeles seguido de otros mercados nacionales.

El Global Fest regresa con 12 artistas de todos los rincones del mundo ocupando los 3 escenarios del Webster Hall, el legendario recinto neoyorquino. El Global Fest es una fiesta que celebra nuestra diversidad y mira al mundo no como una amalgama de países sino como la gran comunidad que somos y la riqueza de nuestras tradiciones musicales!. La 'Voz Femenina' ( The Female Voice) ocupa lugar prominente en el Festival de Cine de Human Rights Watch que se celebra hasta el 21 de Junio en la Film Society del Lincoln Center y el IFC Center.
Estos Trabajos Documentales de excepcional calidad como Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution; Beats of Antonov; What Tomorrow Brings; Trial Of Spring; No Land's Song (ganadora del Premio Nestor Almendros) y Burden of Peace, resaltan la centralidad del rol de la mujer en cada sociedad y los continuos ataques a los que aún es sometido ese rol, llamando a un compromiso más productivo que muestre verdadero progreso en temas tales como el derecho individual de existir y expresarse como tal, de la mujer, sin importar ni religión, ni clase, ni casta. El Human Rights Film Festival nos da otra oportunidad de reafirmar nuestro compromiso por la igualdad y los derechos humanos de todos, sin fronteras ni soberanías que favorezcan la impunidad total.
Otro de los temas que podemos profundizar en el festival es el referente a las libertades civiles e individuales contra los abusos gubernamentales, brutalidad policial, espionaje, corrupción, violencia y terrorismo. Así tenemos documentales como (T)error; Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution; 31/2 Minutes, Ten bullets; The Yes Men Are Revolting, Burden of Peace y (T)error.

- Burden of Peace (Joey Boink, Guatemala- Paises Bajos): La lucha de Claudia Paz y Paz, una mujer luchando contra los grupos de poder y la corrupción en Guatemala.
- Life is Sacred (Andreas Dalsgaard, Dinamarca):
La candidatura de Antanas Mockus en Bogotá y su meetodo de campaña contra la violencia y el poder hacer una nueva política en Colombia.
- (T)error (Lyric R. Cabral y David FelixSutcliffe, US): La historia de Shariff Torres que pasó de Black Panther a FBI informant y una mirada cercana a los abusos gubernamentales, el espionaje doméstico y la libertad de expresión.

Este año en particular, la presencia de temas latinos es fuerte en el festival DOC NYC. La chispa del emprendimiento prende en Costa Rica y en Sud América en contra del machismo, la lejanía, la falta de infraestructura y capital. No hay incentivo de progreso en muchos lugares de América Latina, pero en un rincón de Costa Rica, la directora Lesley Chilcott nos muestra cómo un grupo de mujeres triunfa, crece y genera cambio en A SMALL SECTION OF THE WORLD.
El papel de las mujeres en el desarrollo de América Latina cambiará el rostro del continente como también lo refleja Pamela Yates en otro de sus fantásticos trabajos documentales, DISRUPTION (foto) y las promesas del micro-crédito o la semilla del emprendimiento.
Otra cambio que se presenta en el festival es el climático. La periferia y la centralidad se nos revela en el corto SANTA CRUZ DEL ISLOTE de Luke Lorentzen. Vivir en un islote a 50 millas de Cartagena puede parecer paradisíaco, y a lo mejor lo es. Pero Santa Cruz está casi a nivel del mar y no se le ve que tiene muchas posibilidades de crecer. Países conformados por islas están en peligro de desaparecer bajo las aguas. Qué le espera a Santa Cruz? Tomarán ellos mismos cartas en el asunto?. Porque más allá de todo se impone esta inercia que cuelga sobre el islote, donde no se ve iniciativa, plan de futuro. Prenderá allí también la mecha del emprendimiento ?.
Banksy llegó a NYC y causó revuelo. Y en Banksy Does New York vemos su residencia de 30 días en la ciudad y las reaciones que causó: Qué es arte y qué significa ser artista; la política y el capital en el arte y la protesta a través del arte son todos temas que me vinieron a la cabeza viendo este doc sobre el controversial artista. Controversiales y efectivas son también las campañas y las protestas de The Yes Men Are Revolting. La creatividad y el riesgo tomado en sus 'antics' para poder dejarse oír en medio del bullicio generalizado han hecho imposible que organizaciones, intereses y gobiernos tiren bajo el tapete y se desentiendan de asuntos tan cruciales como el cambio climático. Más allá de las risas (que hay muchas) los Yes Men inspiran a buscar métodos nuevos y efectivos para hacer de la protesta un agente efectivo de cambio.
Estos son solo algunos de los temas que pude sopesar de los tantos presentes en el festival. Como pueden ver debajo, las entradas latinas exploran temas que van desde las pandillas en las calles de Nueva York en los '70 en RUBBLE KINGS hasta la icónica fotografía de Sebastian Salgado, pasando por la vida después de prisión en COMING HOME; la lucha por salarios y condiciones de trabajo justos en THE HAND THAT FEEDS; y la lucha por la vida misma en MARMATO, un pueblo minero de Colombia. Y mucho más para explorar en DOC NYC que se realiza en NYC hasta el 20 de Noviembre.

Viko Nikci follows him as he is released from prison after thirteen years into a new world of smartphones and social media. Readjusting to life on the outside, Angel has two goals: confronting the man who actually committed the crime for which he was punished, and repairing his relationship with the daughter he was forced to leave behind.

After years of exploitation, Mahoma López, an unassuming sandwich maker, leads his fellow service workers as they demand better working conditions and wages. Risking their livelihood—and, for some, deportation—they take to the streets to plead their case to their regular customers, partnering with impassioned young Occupy activists in a hard-fought battle to prove the power of labor organizing.

With plans in place to displace 8,000 inhabitants, level their mountain home and transform it into an open pit to extract the estimated $20 billion in gold buried within, can the community survive?

The South Bronx became a war zone ruled by gangs like the Savage Skulls and the Ghetto Brothers. Hypnotic archival footage and present-day interviews with former gang members reveal how peace was brokered at the peak of the bloodshed in a most unlikely manner, laying the foundation for what ultimately became hip-hop culture.

His black- and-white images bring an artful composition to chronicling humanity's "salt of the earth" in multiyear projects such as "Workers," "Migrations" and "Genesis." This film, directed by his son Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and Wim Wenders, brings an insider's and outsider's perspective on the family, illuminating the key role played by Salgado's wife Lélia Deluiz Wanick and their work on the nature preserve Instituto Terra. Sony Pictures Classics, opens Apr. 3.

El Teatro Pregones repone tres de sus más exitosas obras: Dancing with my Cockroach Killers, El Apagón y Baile Cangrejero. También, el Teatro Thalia nos trae una nueva producción dedicada a Colombia con el Ballet Mestizo y Casa Mezcal presenta la obra 39 Defaults. Por su parte, el Repertorio Español estrena dos obras esta temporada: Entrada Gratis y Bésame Mucho. Además, tendrá un homenaje a la música de Xavier Montsalvatge y continúa con la celebrada adaptación de El Amor en los Tiempos del Cólera, basada en la gran obra de García Márquez. En Brooklyn, Miguel Gutierrez presenta su pieza de danza como parte del Next Wave Festival en el BAM.
En Broadway, The Heiress, con el director venezolano Moisés Kaufman continúa con en el Teatro Walter Kerr junto con Evita y El Libro del Mormón. En Off Broadway la obra Fuerza Bruta tendrá su última función el 6 de Enero después de una muy buena y multianual temporada en la Gran Manzana. No me despido sin recomendarles Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal que nos visitarán en Diciembre.

From the breathtaking Fuego en la cocina, the no-nonsense Why I Lost The Popularity Contest to the hilarious and daring Soap and Water, the actors and musicians of Pregones Ensemble stage a sizzling tribute to poet, storyteller and playwright Magdalena Gómez. The highly theatrical writings of Gómez have been musicalized, performed, published and even danced.

Rhythmic treasures of our Afro Caribe heritage, from Palés to Guillén! A classic Baile Cangrejero sets the great masters of Afro-Latino poetry to the dynamic rhythms of bomba, plena and bolero.
This vibrant spectacle touches on the history, popular culture, and literary creation of the Americas including works by Julia de Burgos, Luis Palés Matos, Fortunato Vizcarrondo (Puerto Rico);Nicolás Guillén (Cuba); Nicomedes Santa Cruz (Perú); and Manuel del Cabral (Dominican Republic).

Xavier Montsalvatge (1912-2002) fue uno de los compositores españoles más influyentes del siglo pasado. Aunque su carrera es poco conocida fuera de la Península Ibérica, Montsalvatge hizo una contribución de gran peso a la historia musical europea. Su música nos invita a pasearnos en un viaje a través de la rica historia cultural del norte de España.

This is a play about idealism and human interactions, about the contrast between ideas and daily necessities. Ricard Neun is a Spanish social activist. He has defrauded 39 banks in Spain. He claims this is not a crime, but a general call for financial disobedience. He is travelling around America giving lectures about this "action". In New York he gives a talk and meets Liz, who invites him to stay at her place.

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.
