THE FEMALE VOICE IS CENTERSTAGE AT THE HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FEST

Así tenemos documentales como (T)error; Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution; 31/2 Minutes, Ten bullets; The Yes Men Are Revolting, Burden of Peace y (T)error.

The 3 Latino themed docs are

 - Life is Sacred (Andreas Dalsgaard, Dinamarca):
La candidatura de Antanas Mockus en Bogotá y su meetodo de campaña contra la violencia y el poder hacer una nueva política en Colombia.

- (T)error (Lyric R. Cabral y David FelixSutcliffe, US): La historia de Shariff Torres que pasó de Black Panther a FBI informant y una mirada cercana a los abusos gubernamentales, el espionaje doméstico y la libertad de expresión.

UNA BUENA CARTELERA LATINA EN EL DOCNYC FESTIVAL + HIGHLIGHTS

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Saturday, November 15, 2014 , under , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

A SMALL SECTION OF THE WORLD.

Banksy llegó a NYC y causó revuelo. The Yes Men Are Revolting.

1_ COMING HOME, Dir. Viko Nikci

INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE - At the age of 25, Angel Cordero, an innocent man, was arrested and convicted of attempted murder following a stabbing in the Bronx. Viko Nikci follows him as he is released from prison after thirteen years into a new world of smartphones and social media. Readjusting to life on the outside, Angel has two goals: confronting the man who actually committed the crime for which he was punished, and repairing his relationship with the daughter he was forced to leave behind.

7:00 PM, Sat. Nov. 15, 2014 - IFC Center
12:30 PM, Thu. Nov. 20, 2014 - IFC Center
Expected to attend: Viko Nikci, film subject Angel Cordero

2_ DISRUPTION, Dir. Pamela Yates

NYC PREMIERE - Recognizing the persistence of income inequality in South America, a group of activist economists join together to offer an alternative path to eliminating poverty: encouraging the poor to open savings accounts and thereby become active agents within the existing economic system. Fundación Capital partners with impoverished women to put their plan for financial inclusion into action, beginning pilot programs in Colombia, Peru and Brazil, and demonstrating the power of women to lead potentially continent-wide social change.

2:30 PM, Sat. Nov. 15, 2014 - IFC Center
5:00 PM, Tue. Nov. 18, 2014 - IFC Center
Expected to attend: Pamela Yates, producer Paco de Onis

3_ THE HAND THAT FEEDS, Dir. Rachel Lears & Robin Blotnick

NYC PREMIERE - An Upper East Side Hot & Crusty bakery serves as the unlikely setting for an old-fashioned David vs. Goliath story in Rachel Lears and Robin Blotnick's rousing film. After years of exploitation, Mahoma López, an unassuming sandwich maker, leads his fellow service workers as they demand better working conditions and wages. Risking their livelihood—and, for some, deportation—they take to the streets to plead their case to their regular customers, partnering with impassioned young Occupy activists in a hard-fought battle to prove the power of labor organizing.

2:30 PM, Sun. Nov. 16, 2014 - IFC Center
Expected to attend: Robin Blotnick, Rachel Lears, film subjects Mahoma Lopez and family

4_ MARMATO, Dir. Mark Grieco

NYC PREMIERE - Exploring the intersection of economic development, environmental impact and globalization, Mark Grieco's film is an intimate and richly observed portrait of Marmato, a rural mining town threatened with destruction. At the center of a new global gold rush, the Colombian government has imperiled Marmato by selling its mines to a Canadian company. With plans in place to displace 8,000 inhabitants, level their mountain home and transform it into an open pit to extract the estimated $20 billion in gold buried within, can the community survive?

2:45 PM, Tue. Nov. 18, 2014 - IFC Center
5:15 PM, Wed. Nov. 19, 2014 - IFC Center
Expected to attend: Mark Grieco

5_ RUBBLE KINGS, Dir. Shan Nicholson

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE - Confronting a bankrupt, decaying city and the dashed hopes of the civil rights generation, African-American and Latino teenagers violently took over the streets of 1970s New York. The South Bronx became a war zone ruled by gangs like the Savage Skulls and the Ghetto Brothers. Hypnotic archival footage and present-day interviews with former gang members reveal how peace was brokered at the peak of the bloodshed in a most unlikely manner, laying the foundation for what ultimately became hip-hop culture.
Screening with Fraser Munden & Neil Rathbone's THE CHAPERONE. An action-packed, animated retelling of what happened when a drunken motorcycle gang invaded a 1970s school dance.

9:15 PM, Sun. Nov. 16, 2014 - SVA Theatre
Expected to attend: Shan Nicholson, film subjects Benji Melendez, Lloyd Murphy, Jee Sanchez, Rolly Rodriguez and D.S.R.

6_ THE SALT OF THE EARTH, Dir. Wim Wenders & Juliano Ribeiro Salgado

Brazilian Sebastião Salgado has created some of the most indelible photographs of our time. His black- and-white images bring an artful composition to chronicling humanity's "salt of the earth" in multiyear projects such as "Workers," "Migrations" and "Genesis." This film, directed by his son Juliano Ribeiro Salgado and Wim Wenders, brings an insider's and outsider's perspective on the family, illuminating the key role played by Salgado's wife Lélia Deluiz Wanick and their work on the nature preserve Instituto Terra. Sony Pictures Classics, opens Apr. 3.

7:00 PM, Wed. Nov. 19, 2014 - Bow Tie Chelsea Cinemas

7_ A SMALL SECTION OF THE WORLD, Dir. Lesley Chilcott

NYC PREMIERE - In equal measures inspiring and endearing, Leslie Chilcott's film spotlights a group of Costa Rican village women who, seeking a way to offset the economically motivated flight of their husbands and sons from the community, form ASOMOBI, a coffee-growing collective—despite not knowing the first thing about growing coffee. Persevering through a steep learning curve and numerous setbacks, ASOMOBI captures the attention and support of a local exporter, and through her, the international coffee industry.
Screening with Luke Lorentzen's SANTA CRUZ DEL ISLOTE. Inhabitants of a remote Colombian island paradise face an uncertain future in changing times.

5:00 PM, Fri. Nov. 14, 2014 - IFC Center
Expected to attend: Lesley Chilcott

This year’s lineup includes the two main prizewinners from both the Venice and Rome Film Festivals—Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary Sacro GRA and Alberto Fasulo’s docudrama Tir (photo)—and also underscores the emergence of documentary as a breeding ground for some of the most exciting recent developments in Italian cinema. An Encounter with "El Duende". A Multidisciplinary Music Performance by Sabrina Lastman.
Composed and performed by Sabrina Lastman. Arrangements from Federico Garcia Lorca’s songs.

About the Show:

A piece for voice, movement, sound, bowed psaltery, megaphone and visuals––all through Lorca's imagination.
Federico Garcia Lorca's eerily passionate world comes to life through a re-imagination of his written, visual, and musical artistry.

About the Artists:

Silence…breath…pitch…shout…melody…rhythm…broken…melody…word…emotion…text…motion…vibrates…dreams…caresses…sculpts…creates…paints…cuts…pushes…sounds…

Sound has the power to resonate in space and with people's inner world. The human voice communicates "stories”—with or without words—inspiring people and providing them awareness about different layers of the emotional, creative and social. We seek new ways to use the voice as an instrument, to expand the song form by developing new structures—at times using free improvisation. Our performances bring together sound, movement, theatricality elements & visuals.

Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 7:00pm
Language: Spanish with English Supertitles
Age: Teen and up

About the Show:

...a story of how Heavy Metal was transformed into a weapon of fire for psychoanalysis.

In this comedy of how two women submerged in the world of therapy try to decipher themselves, music conducts the conversation; it provokes the words that can be transformed in the strokes of a stabbing. Once the music is heard everything unravels, the memories, the relationships, the fears.

About the Artists:

Our mission is to bring the audience the opportunity to experience theater viscerally so that every production becomes a catalyst for reflection, the stimuli of deep emotions, the reason for deliberation, the cause that induces an effect, the spark that incites a change in the way we view the world.

Taal Se Taal (Match your Rhythm to Mine)
A Dance Performance by The Kathak Ensemble & Friends/CARAVAN, Inc. Choreographed by Janaki Patrik & dancers
Dates:
Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 3:00pm
Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 3:00pm
Age: All Ages

About the Show:

Through Indian film songs, Kathak dance and English dialogue, stories of exotic romance, humorous liaisons and irresistible entanglements unfold.
In the Kathak Ensemble's 2012 production TAAL SE TAAL (Match Your Rhythm To Mine), Kathak dances to the beat of four very different drummers: Bollywood's lush orchestrations of classic Indian film songs, Mozart's Allegro from the Jupiter Symphony, finger cymbals and ankle bells, and American composers Samuel Barber and John Adams. Tender romance, humorous liaisons, complex entanglements and gracious interchanges unfold against shifting soundscapes––sometimes lyrical, sometimes ferociously fast, always irresistibly melodic.

About the Artists:

We communicate the richness of Indian culture through its arts, most specifically through the classical North Indian dance style Kathak, its storytelling techniques and its accompanying Hindustani music. Ensemble programs strive to create a dialogue with familiar American arts forms, demystifying unique details of Indian culture by illuminating features it shares with American culture.

Directed by Marisol Rozo
Dates:
Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 7:00pm

About the Show:

"I believe that sex is one of the most beautiful, natural and integral things that money can buy." --Tom Clancy.

A human analysis of the oldest profession throughout history and the most dehumanized profession in contemporary times. In a comical and fearless way, La Guri stimulates our observation of values in society by the reference of her profession. She shows us that there is a part of life that cannot be modified but that must simply be accepted––not with submission but with courage.

About the Artists:

By fusing the disciplines of theater and dance and so creating a distinctive physical theater—our mission is to get the audience to jump into a world of quotidian words that become a new language when they are incited by the movements on stage. We approach delicate and controversial issues in humorous and lighthearted ways that shine a new light on them.

The Whistling Mortician
A Physical Theater Performance by Cloud Of Fools Theater CompanyWritten by Jon Froehlich and ensemble
Directed by Jon Froehlich
Dates:
Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 10:00pm
Sunday, August 5, 2012 at 3:00pm
Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 7:00pm
Language: English
Age: 9 and up

About the Show:

When the powers of death crop up at every turn, what else can one do...but whistle? Like the holy fools before him and the characters of Chaplin and Keaton a couple generations later, The Whistling Mortician postulates the life of a puckish Prussian laborer living in the hotbed of 1870's Alsace-Lorraine. One fateful day following the Franco-Prussian War, he whistles the wrong national anthem up and down the streets of his town––and directly into trouble. Fleeing to far-off countries, he engages in what promises to become the work of his life.

About the Artists:

We create powerfully embodied, deftly inquisitive, and richly entertaining containers which point to both the profound depth, and fundamental mysteriousness, of human nature. We also seek to embody the tensions of living as hilariously, tragically and stubbornly complex beings within a culture dominated by the rational mind. We are, therefore, a theatre of secrets which cannot be described, paths which may only be pointed to, and those universally shared elements of human reality which nonetheless operate in unsearchable darkness.

...themes of real and imagined experiences of foreign cities at night, plunging into our fear of the unknown.

A bad dream about a first date on the first night of an ill-planned trip. Presented as a series of vignettes, dances, ruminations and games, the show mines the company’s real and imagined experiences of foreign cities at night, plunging into our fear of the unknown. Using multiple languages that are spoken, recorded, and projected, the piece exists between our need to communicate and the obstacles that keep us from doing so.

About the Artists:

We are an experimental theatre company making plays that move seamlessly between the irreverent and poetic, the personal and political, and the highly entertaining and intellectually challenging—inspired by Brecht’s view that to be challenged is also to be entertained. Nella Foresta (In the Forest)
A Puppetry Theater Performance
by j33treWritten and directed by Giles Smith
Dates:
Friday, August 10, 2012 at 7:00pm
Sunday, August 12, 2012 at 3:00pm
Language: Italian with English Supertitles
Age: Teen and up

About the Show:

...theatrical journey with life size puppets in which a man finds answers to life's questions through a fairytale forest in his mind.

How and where do we draw the line that separates normal from abnormal? How can we tell the difference between healthy imagination and dangerous fantasy? So it is that Marc is left at the mercy of educators that understand that fairytales have a power to help. In the forest and through fairytales, Marc must recognize the need to struggle against the severe difficulties in life. He must find the key to overcome them and find the answers to questions that afflict all of us: “who am I?” What am I doing here?

About the Artists:

We develop theatre research and work on classic and contemporary plays. We create a new language for each project. Thomas McEvilley said: "The search for the other is the search for the newness of one’s changing self.” For us, this is one of the goals of theatre. So it is that our rehearsals and workshops are open to the needs of the given moment, of each and every one particular production.

About the Show:

...tragedy is a rosary of small woes that unravel on the sheets of a couple's bed.

All in all, things that happen, terrible things that happen: the small disintegrations of our daily life. A couple in a confined space, their desires, their frustrations, their longings. Tragedy is no longer an event of gigantic and universal proportions but rather a rosary of small woes with which our characters weave their lives. An inside look at a couple's daily life and its incurable disintegration.

About the Artists:

Our objective is to represent and promote artistic and cultural interests of a cosmopolitan nature. Theater, cinema, dance, music and plastic arts are utilized through an inclusive and multiethnic lens. We provoke the creation of an open space, a meeting point, exploration, fusion of new artistic languages incited by the cultural exchange fermented in New York City, whose cosmopolitan character makes it the ideal laboratory to create and “believe” art in this manner.
