About the shows:

* You and Me

Theater. Little Soldier Productions. by Roger Simeon, directed by Byrony Shanahan.

Growing old can be a sweet, peaceful process or it can be a real pain in the ass. For two Spanish sisters living in a foreign land, it’s a combination of both. Learn their story as they exchange tender reminiscences, outrageous defamations, and acts of pure madness. Sit on their battered rug amid a mountain of mysterious boxes as they squabble over petty nuisances and recall their fondest memories. Partake in their struggle as they fight to stay in one world for as long as they can, until being forced into another. Is their behavior just eccentricity or something
more destructive?.

* Callaloo: A Jazz Folktale
Theater, music, dance by Marjuan Canady, directed by Natalie Carter composer: Etienne Charles.

Meet Winston, a young boy who gets lost in a dream where mythical Caribbean characters roam freely. Mixing Trinidad and Tobago’s rich Folklore culture with the sweet sounds of jazz emanating from Etienne Charles’ jazz masterpiece Folklore, Callaloo promises to bring you the very best Trinidadian storytelling has to offer. Follow Winston through his dream as he encounters Papa Bois, Soucoyant, La Diablesse, Lagahoo and the Dwens. Sway to the rhythm of the jazz trumpet as two actors in carnival costumes transport you to a world you’ve never yet experienced. Here, Calalloo brings carnival to you.

* Casa de Pessoa
Theater. Yinzerspielen. By Cory Tamler and Patrick Berger.

What if you had the power to bring your favorite literary characters to life? Would you want to? Would you be prepared for the consequences? These are the questions scientist Rich Zenith must face when he decides to advance an experiment he and his wife, Kati, have been working on: breathing life into the legendary Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa’s fictional authors, known as “heteronyms”. Unbeknownst to Kati, Rich throws a surprise party for her in which he will unveil their untested creation. And who will be the test subjects? The audience, of course! Join in on the fun—and terror!—as random members of the party are chosen to embody Pessoa’s most well-known “Nyms”.

* New York: One State. Many Nations
Music. Composer/ Director: Carlos David Bernales.

Exemplifying the essence of a “cultural melting pot”, ‘New York: One State. Many Nations’ sets poetry to music in a concert that celebrates the diversity of one of the greatest cities in the world. With inspiration from pieces by Neruda, Rumi, Whitman, Langston Hughes, Tagore, and Cesar Vallejo, to name a few, composer Carlos D. Bernales orchestrates this ambitious love song to New York. ‘New York’ follows Bernales’ previous project, “PERU: One Country. Many Nations” in exposing just what makes such a place thrive, under the vibrancy of its inhabitants.

* Europa
Theater. Cloud of Fools Theater Company. By Casey Robinson.

In the near future, an ice-covered moon is found to contain life, along with a possible source for long-lasting clean energy deep within its waters. Two astronauts, a man and wife, are chosen to investigate the groundbreaking discovery. They embark on an ambitious quest that will take them far into the depths of this vast new world. But as they sink deeper into the realm of this lunar ocean, in search of a key to the extension of human sustenance, they are forced to reexamine their own connection and question what it is that has kept them together.

* PREMIKA—Women in Love
Dance. The Kathak Ensemble & Friends. Choreographer: Janaki.

Patrik Paints a rainbow of emotions ranging from jealousy and rage to longing and ecstasy. Stories of loving and being loved, set to Hindustani music and classical Indian Kathak dance, are dramatized in modern English. Referring with humor and pathos to contemporary entanglements caused by technology and women’s empowerment, the narrator relates classical dance and poetry to the modern process of tying and untying the lovers’ knot. Wearing one hundred bells on each ankle, the dancers create a sensuous musical soundscape, matched by the shimmer of brocade and silk costumes.

* Janusphere-Evolution

Dance. Janusphere Dance Company. choreographer: Darion Smith.

Janusphere Dance Company presents Janusphere-Evolution, a program of multimedia dance featuring premiere performances of KinderPlatz and A Dancer’s Life. Smith’s choreography redefinaes space and the functionality of movement in KinderPlatz by juxtaposing the free spirit and naivety of youth against the precise, controlled, and sophisticated motions of adults trained in movement. In A Dancer’s Life the inner nature of a dancer’s existence is explored, from the mundane daily tasks to the extraordinary shared experience of dance ensembles, revealing the full range of a dancer’s experiences in compelling and dramatic ways.

*Sarah King
Music. Composer/Director: Jose Conde.

With an instantly classic unforgettable voice, Sarah King sings, plays ukelele, and leads a 9 piece rhythm and brass driven band that bridges Americana, funk, jazz, and pop with 21st century original NY flavor! PAM is very proud to host the debut of this contemporary roots artist and band which is the result of a collaboration between Ms. King and producer, artist, multi-instrumentalist and arranger Jose Conde.

An Encounter with "El Duende". A Multidisciplinary Music Performance by Sabrina Lastman.
Composed and performed by Sabrina Lastman. Arrangements from Federico Garcia Lorca’s songs.

About the Show:

A piece for voice, movement, sound, bowed psaltery, megaphone and visuals––all through Lorca's imagination.
Federico Garcia Lorca's eerily passionate world comes to life through a re-imagination of his written, visual, and musical artistry.

About the Artists:

Silence…breath…pitch…shout…melody…rhythm…broken…melody…word…emotion…text…motion…vibrates…dreams…caresses…sculpts…creates…paints…cuts…pushes…sounds…

Sound has the power to resonate in space and with people's inner world. The human voice communicates "stories”—with or without words—inspiring people and providing them awareness about different layers of the emotional, creative and social. We seek new ways to use the voice as an instrument, to expand the song form by developing new structures—at times using free improvisation. Our performances bring together sound, movement, theatricality elements & visuals.

About the Show:

...a story of how Heavy Metal was transformed into a weapon of fire for psychoanalysis.

In this comedy of how two women submerged in the world of therapy try to decipher themselves, music conducts the conversation; it provokes the words that can be transformed in the strokes of a stabbing. Once the music is heard everything unravels, the memories, the relationships, the fears.

About the Artists:

Our mission is to bring the audience the opportunity to experience theater viscerally so that every production becomes a catalyst for reflection, the stimuli of deep emotions, the reason for deliberation, the cause that induces an effect, the spark that incites a change in the way we view the world.

Taal Se Taal (Match your Rhythm to Mine)
A Dance Performance by The Kathak Ensemble & Friends/CARAVAN, Inc. Choreographed by Janaki Patrik & dancers
Dates:
Saturday, July 28, 2012 at 3:00pm
Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 3:00pm
Age: All Ages

About the Show:

Through Indian film songs, Kathak dance and English dialogue, stories of exotic romance, humorous liaisons and irresistible entanglements unfold.
In the Kathak Ensemble's 2012 production TAAL SE TAAL (Match Your Rhythm To Mine), Kathak dances to the beat of four very different drummers: Bollywood's lush orchestrations of classic Indian film songs, Mozart's Allegro from the Jupiter Symphony, finger cymbals and ankle bells, and American composers Samuel Barber and John Adams. Tender romance, humorous liaisons, complex entanglements and gracious interchanges unfold against shifting soundscapes––sometimes lyrical, sometimes ferociously fast, always irresistibly melodic.

About the Artists:

We communicate the richness of Indian culture through its arts, most specifically through the classical North Indian dance style Kathak, its storytelling techniques and its accompanying Hindustani music. Ensemble programs strive to create a dialogue with familiar American arts forms, demystifying unique details of Indian culture by illuminating features it shares with American culture.

About the Show:

"I believe that sex is one of the most beautiful, natural and integral things that money can buy." --Tom Clancy.

A human analysis of the oldest profession throughout history and the most dehumanized profession in contemporary times. In a comical and fearless way, La Guri stimulates our observation of values in society by the reference of her profession. She shows us that there is a part of life that cannot be modified but that must simply be accepted––not with submission but with courage.

About the Artists:

By fusing the disciplines of theater and dance and so creating a distinctive physical theater—our mission is to get the audience to jump into a world of quotidian words that become a new language when they are incited by the movements on stage. We approach delicate and controversial issues in humorous and lighthearted ways that shine a new light on them.

The Whistling Mortician
A Physical Theater Performance by Cloud Of Fools Theater CompanyWritten by Jon Froehlich and ensemble
Directed by Jon Froehlich

Age: 9 and up

About the Show:

When the powers of death crop up at every turn, what else can one do...but whistle? Like the holy fools before him and the characters of Chaplin and Keaton a couple generations later, The Whistling Mortician postulates the life of a puckish Prussian laborer living in the hotbed of 1870's Alsace-Lorraine. One fateful day following the Franco-Prussian War, he whistles the wrong national anthem up and down the streets of his town––and directly into trouble. Fleeing to far-off countries, he engages in what promises to become the work of his life.

About the Artists:

We create powerfully embodied, deftly inquisitive, and richly entertaining containers which point to both the profound depth, and fundamental mysteriousness, of human nature. We also seek to embody the tensions of living as hilariously, tragically and stubbornly complex beings within a culture dominated by the rational mind. We are, therefore, a theatre of secrets which cannot be described, paths which may only be pointed to, and those universally shared elements of human reality which nonetheless operate in unsearchable darkness.

Using multiple languages that are spoken, recorded, and projected, the piece exists between our need to communicate and the obstacles that keep us from doing so.

About the Show:

...theatrical journey with life size puppets in which a man finds answers to life's questions through a fairytale forest in his mind.

How and where do we draw the line that separates normal from abnormal? How can we tell the difference between healthy imagination and dangerous fantasy? So it is that Marc is left at the mercy of educators that understand that fairytales have a power to help. In the forest and through fairytales, Marc must recognize the need to struggle against the severe difficulties in life. He must find the key to overcome them and find the answers to questions that afflict all of us: “who am I?” What am I doing here?

About the Artists:

We develop theatre research and work on classic and contemporary plays. We create a new language for each project. Thomas McEvilley said: "The search for the other is the search for the newness of one’s changing self.” For us, this is one of the goals of theatre. So it is that our rehearsals and workshops are open to the needs of the given moment, of each and every one particular production.

An inside look at a couple's daily life and its incurable disintegration.

About the Artists:

Our objective is to represent and promote artistic and cultural interests of a cosmopolitan nature. Theater, cinema, dance, music and plastic arts are utilized through an inclusive and multiethnic lens.
