The 5th Performing Arts Marathon will bring 11 great avant-garde shows to New York from July 26 to August 12. These shows will range from theater to dance and multimedia performances, many of which will have their New York premiere. Sound has the power to resonate in space and with people's inner world. The human voice communicates "stories”—with or without words—inspiring people and providing them awareness about different layers of the emotional, creative and social. ...a story of how Heavy Metal was transformed into a weapon of fire for psychoanalysis.
In this comedy of how two women submerged in the world of therapy try to decipher themselves, music conducts the conversation; it provokes the words that can be transformed in the strokes of a stabbing. Once the music is heard everything unravels, the memories, the relationships, the fears.

About the Show:
Through Indian film songs, Kathak dance and English dialogue, stories of exotic romance, humorous liaisons and irresistible entanglements unfold.
In the Kathak Ensemble's 2012 production TAAL SE TAAL (Match Your Rhythm To Mine), Kathak dances to the beat of four very different drummers: Bollywood's lush orchestrations of classic Indian film songs, Mozart's Allegro from the Jupiter Symphony, finger cymbals and ankle bells, and American composers Samuel Barber and John Adams. Tender romance, humorous liaisons, complex entanglements and gracious interchanges unfold against shifting soundscapes––sometimes lyrical, sometimes ferociously fast, always irresistibly melodic.
About the Artists:
We communicate the richness of Indian culture through its arts, most specifically through the classical North Indian dance style Kathak, its storytelling techniques and its accompanying Hindustani music. Ensemble programs strive to create a dialogue with familiar American arts forms, demystifying unique details of Indian culture by illuminating features it shares with American culture.

A human analysis of the oldest profession throughout history and the most dehumanized profession in contemporary times. In a comical and fearless way, La Guri stimulates our observation of values in society by the reference of her profession. She shows us that there is a part of life that cannot be modified but that must simply be accepted––not with submission but with courage.

By fusing the disciplines of theater and dance and so creating a distinctive physical theater—our mission is to get the audience to jump into a world of quotidian words that become a new language when they are incited by the movements on stage. When the powers of death crop up at every turn, what else can one do...but whistle? Like the holy fools before him and the characters of Chaplin and Keaton a couple generations later, The Whistling Mortician postulates the life of a puckish Prussian laborer living in the hotbed of 1870's Alsace-Lorraine. One fateful day following the Franco-Prussian War, he whistles the wrong national anthem up and down the streets of his town––and directly into trouble. Fleeing to far-off countries, he engages in what promises to become the work of his life.

We create powerfully embodied, deftly inquisitive, and richly entertaining containers which point to both the profound depth, and fundamental mysteriousness, of human nature. We also seek to embody the tensions of living as hilariously, tragically and stubbornly complex beings within a culture dominated by the rational mind. A slice out of the urban scene for a closer a look at the need for love. Aside comical relief, moments of destitute, reflection and accomplishment shine through. The choreography paints a clear picture of the metropolitan subways in which a young woman experiences the throws of a relationship..Carefully crafted movements take the inhabitants of this urban platform through the comical yet absolute need for that four letter word: love.

We look to the past for inspiration from the timeless works and traditions of dance and to the future for opportunities to create a unique artistic expression of our world. Our vision recognizes the importance of the performing arts in enriching the lives of all people and involves the collaborative creation of new works by resident and guest choreographers. Using multiple languages that are spoken, recorded, and projected, the piece exists between our need to communicate and the obstacles that keep us from doing so.
About the Artists:
We are an experimental theatre company making plays that move seamlessly between the irreverent and poetic, the personal and political, and the highly entertaining and intellectually challenging—inspired by Brecht’s view that to be challenged is also to be entertained. Based in New York City and working in both English and Spanish, our work includes new plays, classical adaptations and devised creations.

About the Show:
Reincarnations portrays pre-Hispanic mythology alongside Mexican cultural icons and traditions to explore ideas of destiny and life after death.
The choreography is based ontwo souls that meet and form different relationships over the course of several lifetimes. Reincarnations highlights Ih Can Cavil, the Mayan guardian of souls, and Mexican icons such as Emiliano Zapata, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The choreography also uses Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) and ‘la Catrina’, the Mexican personification of death, as a way to explore different cultures’ ways of understanding mortality.
About the Artists:
We fuse dance with aerial arts to communicate indigenous pre-Hispanic and Mexican culture and create bridges between contemporary art and historical heritage. By transforming bodies into earthbound and airborne forces of nature we break physical, cultural and political boundaries.

About the Show:
...theatrical journey with life size puppets in which a man finds answers to life's questions through a fairytale forest in his mind.
How and where do we draw the line that separates normal from abnormal? How can we tell the difference between healthy imagination and dangerous fantasy? So it is that Marc is left at the mercy of educators that understand that fairytales have a power to help. In the forest and through fairytales, Marc must recognize the need to struggle against the severe difficulties in life. He must find the key to overcome them and find the answers to questions that afflict all of us: “who am I?” What am I doing here?
About the Artists:
We develop theatre research and work on classic and contemporary plays. We create a new language for each project. Thomas McEvilley said: "The search for the other is the search for the newness of one’s changing self.” For us, this is one of the goals of theatre. So it is that our rehearsals and workshops are open to the needs of the given moment, of each and every one particular production.

...tragedy is a rosary of small woes that unravel on the sheets of a couple's bed.
All in all, things that happen, terrible things that happen: the small disintegrations of our daily life. A couple in a confined space, their desires, their frustrations, their longings. Tragedy is no longer an event of gigantic and universal proportions but rather a rosary of small woes with which our characters weave their lives. An inside look at a couple's daily life and its incurable disintegration.
About the Artists:
Our objective is to represent and promote artistic and cultural interests of a cosmopolitan nature. Theater, cinema, dance, music and plastic arts are utilized through an inclusive and multiethnic lens. We provoke the creation of an open space, a meeting point, exploration, fusion of new artistic languages incited by the cultural exchange fermented in New York City, whose cosmopolitan character makes it the ideal laboratory to create and “believe” art in this manner.

The moon is a feminine power. It is the supreme symbol of biological rhythms. Through flamenco, 4 young women are intertwined and represent the powers of the moon: hope, intuition, beauty and light in the darkness. Interpreted through sophisticated arrangements, lighting and emotion, the dancers take us on an emotional journey though the art form of Flamenco.

We are dedicated to sharing our passion for the art, music and culture of Andalusia, Spain. We are recognized nationally for maintaining the ethnic richness of flamenco by presenting it in its traditional and modern forms to the New York community. Through high quality local, national and international artists we evoke the inspirations of Andalusian conventions.
