THE GIPSY KINGS > BB King Blues Club, NYC, Agosto 5 >  Gira Nacional en Agosto > GIPSY.

The Gipsy Kings consist of two bands of brothers: the Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, Andre) and the Baliardos (Tonino, Paco, Diego). The Reyes and Baliardo boys were the offspring of Spanish gypsy families that had fled into France to escape Spain's Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, working harvests and making music.
Today the Gipsy Kings still live with their families in the south of France. Life may have changed for them - they no longer busk on streets or pick crops when times are hard or travel in caravans - but still, at heart, they remain Gypsies, the proud descendants of an ancient people who seduced the world with music and dance. On Pasajero, the Gipsy Kings continue their epic musical journey.

PEDRO GIRAUDO JAZZ SEXTET > SUNDAY BRUNCH SERIES > Agosto 5 > BLUE NOTE.

Led by Argentine-born Pedro Giraudo, who has been hailed as one of the most creative and exciting composer/bandleaders on the jazz scene today, this sextet captures the passion and energy of the award-winning Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra. And while its underpinnings are Argentine, it should not be confused with a tango or latin jazz ensemble – the original jazz compositions and arrangements by Pedro Giraudo will catch you with surprising twists, turns, improvisations, instrumental dialogues, harmonies, complexities, rhythms. There’s a hint of South American grooves and a yes, a dash of tango to add to its appeal. Pedro Giraudo, in the tradition of such composers as Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, highlights the unique talents of each band member, masterfully weaving together pre-composed and improvised elements.

LOS ENANITOS VERDES > Irving Plaza > Agosto 23 en NYC > Gira nacional en Agosto > ENANITOS.

Argentinean pop/rock band los Enanitos Verdes was formed in the late '70s by singer/bassist Marciano Cantero, guitarist Felipe Staiti, and drummer Daniel Piccolo. After moving from Mendoza to Buenos Aires, the band started touring the local club circuit. In 1984, guitarist Sergio Embroni and keyboardist Tito Dávila joined in, recording los Enanitos Verdes' first album, followed by Contrareloj, produced by Andrés Calamaro in 1986. Soon after issuing Carrousel, the band began touring South America, becoming one of the favorite numbers at prestigious Viña del Mar festival. Around the same time, "La Muralla Verde" started climbing the most important Latin rock charts. In 1989, los Enanitos Verdes successfully toured Central America, reaching the U.S. while participating in the Billboard Latin Forum Showcase in 1995. After performing at some North American venues, the original threesome lineup recorded 1998's Tracción Acústica and 1999's Grammy-nominated Nectar. ~ Drago Bonacich, Rovi.

BETWEEN THE SEAS FESTIVAL > Rebeca Tomás: A Palo Seco. Tradiciones Nuevas > The Wild Project > Agosto 25 > DANCE.

Spanish bailaora Rebeca Tomás is back by popular demand to this encounter of artists of the Mediterrean. The phrase a palo seco refers to the "a cappella" style of flamenco music, typically consisting of singing or percussion alone. That stripped-down aesthetic characterizes some of the company's biggest departures from tradition, featured in this production of Tradiciones Nuevas. While implementing typical Flamenco props, such as the bata de cola (long-train dress) and abanico (Spanish fan), the repertoire in this production will feature the company's penchant for unconventional fare with an innovative and edgy New York feel.

MUSIC AT JOE'S PUB Diego Garcia > Agosto 20 > JOE'S.

Prior to his successful solo career, Diego Garcia made his mark on the indie music scene as front man for the popular indie act Elefant. Drawing from his Argentine roots, he explores his Latin heritage on his new solo album 'Laura' with a sound that conjures the spirit of 1970’s troubadours like Sandro and Jobim as well as singer-songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Harry Nilsson.
Garcia became a breakout star with the release of his debut solo album ‘Laura.’ NPR named Diego Garcia’s debut “one of the top 25 albums of the year (so far).” He was ‘Artist of the Month’ at tastemaker radio station WXPN-FM in Philadelphia and ‘CD of the Month’ at WFUV in New York City. He has performed live shows for key radio shows across the country, including KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic and WXPN’s World Café.
Garcia’s poignant first single “You Were Never There,” which was co-written by Dhani Harrison (George Harrison’s son) is a perfect example. With lush string arrangements, delicate Spanish guitars, and distinctly Latin flavor, the song is worlds apart from Garcia’s former band Elefant. “You Were Never There” was a Starbucks ‘Pick of the Week’ (750,000 download cards), marking one of the only times that Starbucks has ever selected a Latino artist for this special opportunity.

- Oscar Peñas > Agosto 17.

Spanish born, New York based jazz guitarist and composer Oscar Peñas has been performing and recording since the early 2000s when he released two albums on Fresh Sound New Talent,Astronautus and The Return of the Astronautus. Both CDs featured original compositions in the format of an electric quintet.
Peñas’ most consistent output in the recent years has taken place in the trio format with Franco Pinna and Moto Fukushima. The sound palette of the group flows naturally between acoustic and electric textures with the recent and exciting classy addition of violinist Sara Caswell. Guitarist and composer Oscar Peñas epitomizes a new wave of emerging artists who are an integral part of New York’s flourishing music scene, his compositions transcend and yet merge different genres, cultures and styles with fluidity, garce and power. His style has been described at WNYC as “transnational cool”. Although, his music can be called “jazz”, it crosses the boundaries of traditional music labeling, blending the idiom through original compositions with hints of flamenco and South America grooves.

GABRIEL ALEGRIA AFRO-PERUVIAN SEXTET > August 31.

One of the most influential figures on the current jazz scene in Perú, Gabriel Alegria was born into an artistic family in Lima in 1970. Alegria’s grandfather Ciro was Peru’s most famous novelist and his father Alonso is Perú’s most acclaimed playwright.
Alegria combines his experience playing jazz as it developed in the U.S. with a passionate interest and careful study of the black music of coastal Perú. By incorporating and exploring the common African roots found in both styles, he has developed a uniquely Afro-Peruvian jazz music concept. The rich legacy of the black music of coastal Perú can be heard in a contemporary jazz context. In all of Alegria’s work, a cross-cultural exchange between the

Americas is always present, carefully defining Afro-Peruvian jazz music as the newest voice to come from Latin America.
