La 10ma Edición del Festival Inter-diciplinario Crossing the Line de la Alianza Francesa, nos trae 11 estrenos y 5 comisiones a varios locales y espacios públicos de la ciudad, desde ahora hasta el 3 de noviembre.

Conectando al mundo a través de la danza, la edición 35 del Festival de Danza Battery Park regresa al Bajo Manhattan hasta el 19 de Agosto.

Presentando 35 compañías de danza, 38 coreógrafos y 160 artistas nacionales e internacionales, el festival es el evento más grande en su género que se realiza en NYC. 

La ubicación (con el Río Hudson y la Estátua de la Libertad de fondo), la variedad y excelencia de sus presentaciones, aseguran momentos inolvidables de inspiración para todos. 

Por si fuera poco, el festival es gratuito y ofrece además talleres para profundizar en el arte de la danza. 

Los performances se realizan en el Parque Wagner del Bajo Manhattan de 6:30 a 8:30 PM.

Por su parte, el musical On Your Feet, de Gloria Stefan acaba de estrenar en el Teatro Marquis. La coreógrafa y bailarina española Blanca Li se encuentra de visita en Nueva York presentando su nuevo espectáculo ROBOT, un ballet en donde humanos y robots bailan e interactúan. Para Blanca Li este nuevo trabajo es una 'reflexión' sobre el rol de la tecnología y sobre la apreciación de las asombrosas facultades humanas.

You still can get to see one of the great events participating in Lincoln Center’s fourth multidisciplinary White Light Festival that ends on November 23. The Festival’s focus is the power of art to illuminate the many dimensions of our interior lives, with a particular emphasis this year on the power of the voice. Spanning numerous musical traditions, genres, and disciplines, the Festival
offers performances, films and events by artists and companies from more than a dozen countries.

There are a couple of events coming up, definitely worth noting: 

** Era la Notte, the acclaimed one-woman staged concert in which Soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci portrays passionate female characters from four works by four 17th-century Italian composers: Biagio Marini, Pietro Antonio Giramo, Barbara Strozzi and Claudio Monteverdi.

** Malian singer-songwriter, Rokia Traoré, “Africa’s most interesting and genuinely experimental contemporary musician” (Daily Telegraph-London), returns to the White Light Festival performing work from her latest, critically-acclaimed, and most rock-influenced album to date, Beautiful Africa.

** Mark Morris Dance Group, one of America’s most beloved modern dance companies, has made frequent appearances at the Mostly Mozart Festival in recent years. Now the company returns for its first White Light Festival appearance with choreographer Mark Morris’ landmark work, Handel’s pastoral ode L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato (“The Merry Man, the Thoughtful Man, and the Moderate Man”). Nicholas McGegan will lead the MMDG Music Ensemble and soloists.

Tuve la oportunidad de escucharle cantar - junto con Derek Klena- el tema 'As Long As You Are Mine', durante una presentación de Broadway en Bryant Park. Disfrútenlos debajo o siguiendo el enlace > Wicked. El musical Wicked nos habla de la historia de las famosas Brujas de Oz mucho antes que Dorothy se apareciera por esos lares. En Broadway desde el 2003 y ganadora de varios premios teatrales incluido el Tony, Wicked ha contado con varias actrices Latinas en roles estelares. En estos momentos es Lindsay Méndez en el rol de Elphaba.

Una de las producciones más sólidas presentadas ahora por el Repertorio, Cita a Ciegas, con libreto de Mario Diament, es una obra rica y juguetona con la lengua y sus referentes, con estupendas actuaciones, un escenario parco y evocador y una sutil dirección del señor Triana. La obra toma rato en levantarse, sobre todo por el poco uso que se hace del escenario durante la primera parte. Cita a Ciegas, encuentros al azar, el quizá de un momento, el qué habría pasado si..., las coincidencias, ah!, esas extrañas coincidencias. En fin, los encuentros, y los desencuentros, de la vida.

Love is blind and in this case, it’s blind, dangerous, and hilarious! Full of wit, wild characters, and plenty of over the top twists and turns; this play is a wicked look at the absurd choices people can make to maintain social appearances.

Ever wished you could be another person? In a big city, some can take that wish too far.
Two neighbors. Perfect strangers with nothing in common except that one of them has been watching the other for a long time. When a new immigration law allows legal citizens to report suspects, the two strangers finally meet.
In Scheherazade and the Sultan, she captivates him with a new tale each night, to keep him intrigued and avoid her death. In Nocturnal Creatures, one man is forced to become friends with the other, under the threat of being reported to the authorities. But their unlikely friendship soon turns into obsession, bringing abrupt consequences. Brimming with dark humor, Nocturnal Creatures depicts four urban characters starved of communication. Much like the nocturnal creatures of a zoo live under artificial night light, these two couples live under pretended normalcy and muted violence. Una mirada a la vida americana moderna desde la perspectiva de una familia puertorriqueña. Un joven recientemente graduado de la universidad que se siente alienado por su extravagante familia, hace planes para aceptar un trabajo de periodismo en Turquía. Sus padres, sin embargo, tienen planes diferentes para él, y durante un viaje a un casino al norte del estado de Nueva York para celebrar su graduación y su cumpleaños número 21, se desata toda la controversia cuando miembros de la familia se encuentran en desacuerdo sobre si deben apoyar o no su decisión.

Pablo Zinger, director musical de zarzuelas y antologías musicales de Repertorio Español, regresa a la compañía con un nuevo programa que celebra las contribuciones musicales de compositoras latinoamericanas. La antología incluye adoradas canciones tales como “Bésame mucho”, “Dos gardenias”, “Júrame”, “Cachito”, “Olas y arena” y “Gracias a la vida” interpretadas por extraordinarias voces con música en vivo.

Algunas de las compositoras cuyas canciones forman parte del programa, incluyen Sylvia Rexach (Puerto Rico), María Grever y Consuelo Velásquez (México), Isolina Carrillo y Ernestina Lecuona (Cuba), Chabuca Granda (Perú), Violeta Parra (Chile) y Eladia Blázquez y María Elena Walsh (Argentina).

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.

Based on Julia Álvarez’s popular novel, the martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production by the talented duo – playwright Caridad Svich and director José Zayas– that brought us the critically acclaimed production of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” in 2009.
