El Ballet Hispánico está celebrando su temporada número 45 en el Teatro Joyce de Chelsea. El programa incluye Club Havana de Pedro Ruiz. Además, las piezas 'Flabergast' de Gustavo Ramírez Sansano y 'Bury me Standing' de Ramón Oller. Felicitaciones a todo el equipo que have posible el Ballet Hispánico!.

ARTISTAS LATINOS EN MUESTRA INAUGURAL DEL NUEVO MUSEO WHITNEY

AMERICA IS HARD TO SEE es la muestra inaugural del Museo Whitney en su nueva sede ubicada en el Meat Packing District (MPD) de Manhattan (foto superior). El Nuevo Whitney abrió sus puertas el pasado 1 de Mayo y ya hoy se aprecia el espaldarazo que a la zona le ha dado su presencia.

 Como bien lo definió el New York Times, esta adición consolida las zonas de Chelsea y el MPD como el nuevo eje cultural de Nueva York.
Son 14 los Artistas Latinos participando en America is Hard to See. Es una lista selecta de artistas Latinos, pero no son los únicos que posee el museo. Y la lista no es nada corta. El Whitney tiene una nutrida representación de la contribución artística de la comunidad Latina al acervo artístico y cultural de los Estados Unidos de América. En futuras muestras esperamos tener la oportunidad de disfrutarlos a todos.
Como abreboca, una Instalación de Felix González-Torres le da la bienvenida a los visitantes al entrar al recinto y funge como un hilo conector de todo el edifico y sus tesoros.

 También están presentes en los diferentes niveles obras de Carmen Herrera, Marisol, Ana Mendieta, José Clemente Orozco, Wayne González, Abelardo Morell, Miguel Covarrubias, Raphael Montañez Ortiz, Rafael Ferrer, Richard Serra, Maurizio Cattelan, Alfonso Ossorio y Luis Camnitzer.

Tuve la oportunidad de visitar el nuevo Whitney antes de su apertura oficial. Es un espacio fantástico creado por Renzo Piano, que acomoda y muestra las piezas de arte en todo su esplendor. Junto con la muestra, es preciso el paseo por sus recintos llenos de luz y el disfrute de sus espacios externos, las terrazas y miradores que muestran la nueva cara de la Gran Manzana en sus 360 grados de gloria. ARTE: ABLUTION. NUEVAS PINTURAS DE LAUTARO

La Galeria Praxis de Chelsea ha montado una muestra con las pinturas del artista argentino (residente de Brooklyn) Lautaro Cuttica. La muestra, titulada ABLUTION explora nuestra relación con el mar, el agua y la pureza del ser. 

El título sugiere el rito de la limpieza, corporal y/o espiritual, teniendo al agua como vehículo principal. Así, Ablution nos transporta a la cotidianidad del paseo al mar, o al rio, con pinturas muy íntimas de momentos comunes que se nos presentan suspendidos en el tiempo, en meditación.

Tienen hasta este 5 de Julio para visitarla.

ARTE: BERNARDI ROIG'S THE MIRROR in NYC.

Spanish artist Bernardi Roig's solo exhibition: THE MIRROR (exercises to be another), has just ended at Claire Oliver Gallery in NYC. If you couldn't make it to the gallery, here are some shots I took several days ago. 
With a series of new sculptures and charcoal drawings, the artist continues the exploration of man's anxiety to belong, unfolding for the viewer an unsettling experience with his obsessions.


Roig confronts the actions we take based on outside pressures and influences, and those images in our heads which we are unable to explain to others through our known human faculties. The Artist's new works labor under a shadow of two key queries: how does one confront iconic imagery which is still relevant, and how is it possible in a world overflowing with images, to create a new and lasting image, an image that pushes us to the edge of what is possible. 


Deeply influenced by literature and film, Roig’s work has followed a path swayed by narrative and a theatrical concept of plastic space. See the slideshow below or follow the link > Roig.

 About:
KAWS’s signature COMPANION figure appears in two new sculptures fabricated in wood – each over eighteen feet high – that rise to the ceiling of the soaring skylit space. In ALONG THE WAY, a pair of the figures, heads lowered and one arm on each other’s back, embrace in a pose of gentle solace. The other work, AT THIS TIME, presents Companion standing alone with head arched back and hands covering the eyes. The posture at once conveys a reluctance to face the world and a withdrawal from what has already been witnessed.
Three eight-foot tondo paintings that complete the exhibition reveal KAWS’s distinctive mode of advancing the bold colors and streamlined iconography of Pop art. While the dynamic shapes suggest close-ups of the plump hands, X’d eyes, and crossbone ears the figures, the close cropping of the images allows the paintings to vacillate between figuration and abstraction.

La artista española Susana Solano celebra su primera muestra individual en la Galería Jack Shainman de Chelsea. La muestra, A meitat de camí, repasa 26 años de la obra de la reconocida artista contemporánea con obras nunca vistas por estos lares y una nueva serie de esculturas inspirada en sus viajes por Africa y Asia, que también les conectará con la tradición del tejido de ratán o similares productos naturales en las Américas. A meitat de camí – Halfway there, is Susana Solano’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition will span the past 26 years of Solano’s practice and will include historical works that have never been shown in New York alongside new sculptures. One of Spain’s most prominent contemporary artists, Solano first gained international recognition in the 80s and 90s and continues to delve into her powerful, intimate and poetic practice. 


Solano is best known for her abstract sculptures made from a range of materials that includes iron, steel, lead, glass, rattan and wire mesh. She belongs to a generation of pioneering female sculptors who expanded a realm conventionally dominated by men. Within the traditions of post-minimalism, Solano’s work conveys a connection to personal memory, domestic space, and the natural world. With the artist’s hand leaving traces of her process, the rigidity of the materials is counterbalanced with the personal. 


Her approach is one that channels architectural forms and consideration of space with a delicate quality that balances the natural and the industrial. 


Since including Solano in a group exhibition in 1989 entitled Dialogue with Space, the gallery has been intrigued with the way her work generates a provocative psychological space through its minimal, architectural qualities. The exhibition in both of the gallery’s Chelsea locations will include many of Solano’s most iconic sculptures, as well as work from a series dedicated to Philip Guston, wall based sculptures, and rattan works influenced in part by the artist’s travels to Africa and Asia. 


In the 1989 text that accompanied Solano’s solo exhibition at the Hirshhorn, Phyllis Rosenzweig wrote, “Solano’s sculptures attest to a continuing belief in art’s evocative power. The contemporary appeal of her work resides in its austere formal beauty and conflation of cultural reference and memory.”

EL MUNDO DE RICHARD SERRA EN LA GALERIA GAGOSIAN DE NYC

Reconocido mundialmente por sus ondulantes gigantes de acero, el artista Richard Serra acaba de abrir al público una serie de nuevas esculturas en la Galería Gagosian de Chelsea (W21st y W24th). Esta muestra continúa esa tradición ondulante pero también inicia un nuevo derrotero.

En la calle 21 se presenta Inside Out, en donde el acero se moldea fluidamente como un lazo y crea pasajes y salones por donde perderse. En la calle 24, el nuevo experimento creativo de Serra: 7 Plates, 6 Angles; Intervals; y Grief and Reason (for Walter) en donde las lineas, los ángulos rectos y los volúmenes cuadrados y rectangulares dominan, como una versión moderna de los monolitos de otrora.

Tuve el placer de entrevistar a Richard Serra brevemente durante la apertura de su Retrospectiva de Dibujos en el Museo Metropolitano de Nueva York hace un par de años.

Era la primera vez que exhibía sus dibujos y fue mi primer acercamiento a la persona del artista. Aunque en ese momento Richard Serra fue enfático al declarar que consideraba su obra como dibujante y como escultor dos cuerpos de trabajo totalmente independientes, al ver las nuevas esculturas y ver sus dibujos en el Metropolitano, no puedo sino ver extrapolaciones. DAMIAN ORTEGA ESTUVO EN NYC

 About:
Beginning his career as a political cartoonist, Ortega has taken a longstanding interest in teasing out the underlying social and political narrative embedded in even the most mundane of materials, from tools to automobiles. Deconstructing familiar objects, Ortega creates new spatial arrangements with the materials, enabling each component to be analyzed and reconsidered. Ortega is fascinated by systems, and a formal interest in analyzing the relationship between individual parts and their larger whole runs through the artist’s work. Creating works that are at once playful and deeply provocative, Ortega investigates the way things come apart, yet remain fundamentally connected to one another.
For this exhibition, which includes sculpture, installation art, and photographic works, Ortega turns his eye to the concept of language, exploring the ways in which it is fragmented and deconstructed. The main gallery space features a large-scale installation composed of 25 twisted steel sculptures hanging from the ceiling in five grid-like rows. Spotlights hang above each element of the installation, casting a shadow on the ground in the shape of letters of the alphabet. Proposing the idea of creating a new alphabet or language, Ortega has created a work that, like language, is composed of individual elements, yet reads as a fluid whole, with each sculpture evidencing connectivity to its surrounding components.

ALEJANDRA PADILLA EN PRAXIS NYC

Contemporary artist, Alejandra Padilla was born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina in 1961. She studied journalism at the J.F.Kennedy University in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Art History at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Early in her career she worked as a journalist, art dealer, and as an independent art curator. In 1994 she presented her first work as a visual artist, « Angeles de Luz I” at the Award Manuel Belgrano were she participated in her first group show at the Recoleta Cultural Art Center in Buenos Aires. Since then she participates in awards, art fairs, and international group exhibitions. She had his first solo exhibition in 1997 at the Ricardo Rojas Cultural Art Center, Buenos Aires. Alejandra lives in Buenos Aires - Argentina, and New York City - US.

La SEFT-1 es un proyecto de arte transdisciplinario, de interacción y difusión pública, que propone la exploración de vías de ferrocarril en desuso como punto de partida para la reflexión y la investigación; su importancia histórica, sus implicaciones sociales, circunstancias y contextos actuales. Aborda dos polos de la experiencia social de la tecnología: la utilidad y el desecho.

La SEFT-1 es un vehículo capaz de viajar tanto en tierra como sobre las vías, esta sonda exploratoria tiene el objetivo de hacer un levantamiento de fotografía, video, audio y texto de sus encuentros, del paisaje e infraestructura alrededor de los trayectos, así como entrevistas con los pobladores a pie de vía etc... Transmite la información a su sitio web, www.seft1.net, en el cual se puede monitorear el estado de la sonda, su ubicación, rutas trazadas en mapas geoposicionados, ver imágenes y videos de sus recorridos y accesar a información de contexto editada por un equipo de investigación. Esta Información también es mostrada en proyecciones en algunas de las poblaciones por las que pasa.

La retrospectiva de la obra tardía de Pablo Picasso titulada MOSQUETEROS, se está llevando a cabo en la Galería Gagosian de Nueva York hasta el 6 de Junio, 2009. El espacio de la Gagosian en West Chelsea es esplendido, amplio, lleno de luz y perfecto para poder apreciar a plenitud el genio del artísta malagueño. La muestra presenta muchas de sus obras poco conocidas que forman parte de la colección de Bernard Ruíz-Picasso, el Museo de Arte Moderno de Nueva York, el Museo Picasso de Málaga y de varias colecciones privadas.

La muestra busca, fundamentalmente, extender el análisis del contexto, los sujetos y las fuentes que iluminaron a Picasso en su trabajo tardío (1962-1972), revelando su continua innovación en estilo y técnica asi como la contemporaneidad de su obra. En Mosqueteros, una serie de personajes reales e imaginarios - desde su musa y esposa en los últimos años de su vida, Jacqueline Roque, hasta mosqueteros, caballeros, actores de circo y prostitutas- nos miran a la cara y nos seducen.

PATTI SMITH'S VEILS EN CHELSEA

La nueva muestra de Patti Smith, ícono cultural, permanecerá abierta al público hasta este próximo 18 de Abril y comprende una selección de sus instalaciones y una serie de fotografías tomadas en una iglesia bajo renovación. Los monumentos dentro de la iglesia cubiertos con plástico para protegerlos, le da el nombre a esta muestra: Veil ( Velo). La idea del velo se extiende a varias instalaciones también cubiertas y que le dan a la muestra un hilo unificador y nos sumergen en una atmósfera de contemplación y discernimiento de elementos mundanos y religiosos y su significado personal. El velo como elemento de lo semi oculto, de lo que se percibe como presente pero etereo, con contornos difusos y significados ambivalentes. Una de las instalaciones centrales que más llamó mi atención es la recreación de la litera usada por el poeta Rimbaud en su viaje atravéz de Africa hasta el mar, enfermo y de regreso a Europa. La litera, cubierta con redes de pescadores que se extienden por el suelo de la galería me conectó con lo tangible y lo efímero de la experiencia humana.

Conversé con Patti la noche de la recepción en su honor. Con una simplicidad y un poco nerviosa ante la mirada y la atención recibida me comentó que las fotos las habia tomado mientras caminaba en Bilbao, España. Ante la pregunta de '¿planificaste la session?'. Su respuesta, sincera:" No! me tomó cinco minutos!'
La sensibilidad del artista conlleva el percibir el momento, tomarlo cuando se presenta y llevarlo a una totalidad. Veil es un tal momento.

SOLAR ART IN CHELSEA

Solar, the well known East Hampton Art Gallery, will be presenting an exhibit by Venezuelan artist Eduardo Bárcenas at the Elga Wimmer PCC in Chelsea, Jan 13- Feb 7, 2009. The exhibit is title Acts of Silence and is the first part of a series called Glocal Proposals that Esperanza León, director of Solar, plans to hold at the Chelsea space. Glocal Proposals bring together artists able to identify sensitively with global as well as local influences and circumstances in their artwork. Their capacity to bridge the poles creates a new mode of expression: glocal. Many, if not most people nowadays, live glocal lives led by globalizing factors like air travel, mobile phones, the Internet. It is the artist's ability to be authentic to his local social and cultural expression while identifying himself, and being identified with, a global arts representation that is key to a successful work of art.
This is Bárcenas' first solo show in New York City and includes paintings and works on paper as well as wire and mixed media box constructions dating between 2000 and the present. Bárcenas exposes issues of identity and existence through masks and visages, including a self-portrait. Benjamin Genocchio wrote in The New York Times about the artist's 2006 show at SOLAR in East Hampton, "Mr. Bárcenas takes as his theme social and political events in Latin America, though without grandstanding or being too obvious about it.
