THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND : ESCULTURAS DE IVAN NAVARRO EN NYC

No dejen de visitar la exhibición al aire libre de la obra del artista chileno (vive en Brooklyn) Iván Navarro que se presenta en el Madison Square Park hasta Abril 13 del corriente año. Las esculturas iluminadas de Navarro representan la experiencia del inmigrante y la busqueda democrática. El agua y su almacenamiento como símbolos de continuidad y de aspiraciones. 

La Torre de Agua, tan sinónima de NYC es iluminada por dentro con símbolos y letras en neón (me, we, bed) que se reflejan al infinito creando esa sensación de portal a algo mejor, a la inclusión, a la democracia, al progreso, al bienestar.

Todos ellos son centrales a la experiencia del inmigrante como también a la del trabajador asalariado en cualquier rincón del país. El nombre es tomado de la canción de Guthrie del mismo nombre cuya letra le sirvió de inspiración al artista. Vean la galería debajo o sigan el enlace a picasa > NAVARRO.

ARTE: KAWS IN CHELSEA

No se olviden de pasar por la magnífica muestra de esculturas del artista KAWS que les espera en la Galería Mary Boone de Chelsea. Su ya famosa serie COMPANION añade tres nuevos gigantes de madera que les dará pausa y seguro un par de fotos estupendas. Visita la galería > KAWS.

 About:
KAWS’s signature COMPANION figure appears in two new sculptures fabricated in wood – each over eighteen feet high – that rise to the ceiling of the soaring skylit space. In ALONG THE WAY, a pair of the figures, heads lowered and one arm on each other’s back, embrace in a pose of gentle solace. The other work, AT THIS TIME, presents Companion standing alone with head arched back and hands covering the eyes. The posture at once conveys a reluctance to face the world and a withdrawal from what has already been witnessed.
Three eight-foot tondo paintings that complete the exhibition reveal KAWS’s distinctive mode of advancing the bold colors and streamlined iconography of Pop art. While the dynamic shapes suggest close-ups of the plump hands, X’d eyes, and crossbone ears the figures, the close cropping of the images allows the paintings to vacillate between figuration and abstraction.

Reconocido mundialmente por sus ondulantes gigantes de acero, el artista Richard Serra acaba de abrir al público una serie de nuevas esculturas en la Galería Gagosian de Chelsea (W21st y W24th). Esta muestra continúa esa tradición ondulante pero también inicia un nuevo derrotero.

En la calle 21 se presenta Inside Out, en donde el acero se moldea fluidamente como un lazo y crea pasajes y salones por donde perderse. En la calle 24, el nuevo experimento creativo de Serra: 7 Plates, 6 Angles; Intervals; y Grief and Reason (for Walter) en donde las lineas, los ángulos rectos y los volúmenes cuadrados y rectangulares dominan, como una versión moderna de los monolitos de otrora.

Tuve el placer de entrevistar a Richard Serra brevemente durante la apertura de su Retrospectiva de Dibujos en el Museo Metropolitano de Nueva York hace un par de años.

Era la primera vez que exhibía sus dibujos y fue mi primer acercamiento a la persona del artista. Aunque en ese momento Richard Serra fue enfático al declarar que consideraba su obra como dibujante y como escultor dos cuerpos de trabajo totalmente independientes, al ver las nuevas esculturas y ver sus dibujos en el Metropolitano, no puedo sino ver extrapolaciones. Desde el Met, la fascinación con la inmensidad y lo directo de sus gigantes de acero me han maravillado. Esta no es la excepción.

ESCULTURAS DE MANOLO VALDES EN EL JARDIN BOTANICO de NYC

Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape of the Botanical Garden, seven towering sculptures by acclaimed Spanish artist Manolo Valdés showcase the relationship between art and nature.

The sculptures have been sited to take maximum advantage of the Garden's dramatic views with special attention given to the visual impact of the changing seasons. The artist has designed the installation to include surprising changes in the visual character of the sculptures throughout the seasons.
