Thursday, October 31, 2013 , Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE at 2:17 PM

Desde los escenarios de Broadway hasta las nuevas producciones en el Repertorio Español, aquí tienen algunas de nuestras recomendaciones para la temporada teatral en NYC.

 The Glass Menagerie > Limited engagement > Booth Theatre > Glass.

About: Amanda Wingfield (two-time Tony Award winner CHERRY JONES) is a Southern belle past her prime, living with two grown children in a small apartment in St. Louis. Amanda dreams of a better life for her shy and crippled daughter Laura (two-time Tony Award nominee CELIA KEENAN-BOLGER), and so she pushes her son, Tom (ZACHARY QUINTO, Angels in America), to find a “gentleman caller” for the girl. However, the arrival of the gentleman caller (BRIAN J. SMITH, The Columnist) sends shockwaves through the family and causes cracks to form in the delicate fantasies that have kept them going.

* WICKED > Open ended > In NYC at the George Gershwin Theatre > On national tour as well > More info > Wicked.

About: Wicked is the untold story of the Witches of Oz. Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. Wicked tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

FIRST DATE > A Musical Comedy > Open ended > Longacre Theatre > First.

When blind date newbie Aaron (Zachary Levi; “Chuck” and Thor: The Dark World) is set up with serial-dater Casey (Krysta Rodriguez; “Smash” and The Addams Family), a casual drink at a busy New York restaurant turns into a hilarious high-stakes dinner. As the date unfolds in real time, the couple quickly finds that they are not alone on this unpredictable evening. In a delightful and unexpected twist, Casey and Aaron’s inner critics take on a life of their own when other restaurant patrons transform into supportive best friends, manipulative exes and protective parents, who sing and dance them through ice-breakers, appetizers and potential conversational land mines. Can this couple turn what could be a dating disaster into something special before the check arrives?.

FUERZA BRUTA > Daryl Roth Theatre > Fuerza.

From the creators of the smash-hit De La Guarda, Fuerza Bruta is an event where worlds collide, dreams are real and reality takes a back seat. The visuals are spectacular. The effects are stunning. Performers run and tumble across a vertical wall of technicolor cloth, a man runs headlong through a wall – most extraordinary of all – performers dance in watery world just above the audience’s heads. This all takes place to a soundtrack that traverses thumping club beats to the mellow sounds of new world music. Fuerza Bruta took Europe, South America and Miami by storm – and has been captivating New York audiences as one of the most talked about theatrical experiences On or off Broadway!

* CITA A CIEGAS > Varias fechas > Repertorio Español > Cita.

About:
Performed around the world to enthusiastic critical and audience acclaim, “Cita a ciegas” is a compelling and riveting play about chance encounters. An intricate puzzle of passions, destinies, and coincidences seduces audiences into a world filled with unrequited love, dangerous obsessions, and the thought of what-might-have-been.
Written by Mario Diament. Directed by Jorge Alí Triana.

* LA NENA SE CASA > Varias fechas > Repertorio Español > Nena.

La nena se casa is a cleverly cruel comedy about a desperate father who will do absolutely anything to marry off one of his three spinster daughters. Love is blind and in this case, it’s blind, dangerous, and hilarious! Full of wit, wild characters, and plenty of over the top twists and turns; this play is a wicked look at the absurd choices people can make to maintain social appearances.

* NOCTURNAL CREATURES > Juan Mayorga > Celebrating LaMicro Theater’s 10-year anniversary > Octubre 30-Noviembre 3 > Teatro Círculo > NOCTURNAL.

Ever wished you could be another person? In a big city, some can take that wish too far.
Two neighbors. Perfect strangers with nothing in common except that one of them has been watching the other for a long time. When a new immigration law allows legal citizens to report suspects, the two strangers finally meet.
In Scheherazade and the Sultan, she captivates him with a new tale each night, to keep him intrigued and avoid her death. In Nocturnal Creatures, one man is forced to become friends with the other, under the threat of being reported to the authorities. But their unlikely friendship soon turns into obsession, bringing abrupt consequences. Brimming with dark humor, Nocturnal Creatures depicts four urban characters starved of communication. Much like the nocturnal creatures of a zoo live under artificial night light, these two couples live under pretended normalcy and muted violence. And when they finally speak up, they barely recognize themselves, or the others.
Directed by Jerry Ruiz.

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.
Based on Julia Álvarez’s popular novel, the martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production by the talented duo – playwright Caridad Svich and director José Zayas– that brought us the critically acclaimed production of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” in 2009.
