SUMMER SESSION LLEGA A LA MICRO THEATER

El teatro latino de Nueva York transita por buenos senderos. Junto al mega éxito de "Hamilton" y "On Your Feet!" en Broadway, hay
otras propuestas -de menor escala, claro- importantes en su tarea de acercar este maravilloso arte al público.

Esto da gusto compartir. El teatro hecho por hispanos en Nueva York vive un gran momento y no solo por el éxito de los pesos pesados Lin-Manuel Miranda, Revolución Latina, Sergio Trujillo, Blanca Marroquín, por citar algunos. Aquí también vale destacar LaMicro Theater, un ensemble liderado por dos actores y dramaturgos chilenos de trayectoria quienes sienten y viven el teatro de manera intensa. Lo llevan en la sangre: Berioska Ipinza y Pietro González. 



En 2003, crearon este colectivo teatral (en Chile, la micro es el bus, guagua, colectivo, autobus, camión) con el fin de acercar la magia del teatro a la comunidad. Además de subir obras al escenario, LaMicro también ofrece talleres y clases para la comunidad, desarrollo de talentos y lecturas todo el año. 

Los días 24 y 25 de junio presenta Summer Session 2016, un programa de dos días que aborda temas relevantes  para la comunidad latina y que incluye tres obras en desarrollo y un premiado documental sobre el dictador español Francisco Franco. 
Para LaMicro Theater es muy importante presentar obras que exploran identidad, género, memoria, inmigración, y los efectos que estos temas tienen en la vida de aquellas personas que los han experimentado.
Las obras de Summer Session 2016 son: “Unavailable”, escrita y protagonizada por Yadira De La Riva, es un monólogo que explora los efectos del trauma en una familia mexicana; “Fru Mary”, de Berioska Ipinza, es una exploración a la infancia de dos hermanos y de como su imaginación juega un rol vital para sobrellevar el abandono de su madre; y “Reunion” de Pietro González, un trabajo en desarrollo que se introduce en la vida de una familia que ha vivido separada por largos periodos de tiempo y los obstáculos que tienen que vencer para ser capaces de relacionarse entre ellos tras años de separación. Esta última obra fue parte de un taller, libre de costo, que impartió recientemente LaMicro Theater en colaboración con el reconocido dramaturgo chileno  Alejandro Moreno Jashes, profesor de New York University.

En Summer Session 2016, LaMicro también presenta “Los Colonos del Caudillo/Franco’s Settlers” (2013), una película sobre un pequeño pueblo que sigue ofreciendo tributo a su creador, Francisco Franco. “Los Colonos del Caudillo/Franco’s Settlers” hace que un país entero se mire al espejo. La cinta fue producida por Playloud Production y co-dirigida por Lucía Palacios y Dietmar Post.
Summer Session 2016 es posible gracias al generoso aporte de New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

En Septiembre 2003, LaMicro Theater se fundó en Nueva York bajo la dirección de Berioska Ipinza y Pietro González, dos reconocidos actores, dramaturgos y directores de origen chileno. LaMicro produce obras bilingües de autores latinos en ascenso y, además, trabajos colectivos en colaboración con artistas de diferentes entornos y orígenes, con el fin de acoger la diversidad en el proceso creativo.

¡ LA COPA AMÉRICA CELEBRA SU CENTENARIO EN ESTADOS UNIDOS !

La Copa América celebra su centenario y lo hace en los Estados Unidos!. Por Alex Guerrero.  

 Son 10 ciudades, 16 selecciones, los mejores jugadores de futbol del planeta y un evento de envergadura realmente continental que nos une a todos como hijos de esta parte del hemisferio occidental. Todos jugarán por obtener un trofeo super especial, la Copa América Centenario.  Otro elemento que hace a esta Copa América especial es que por primera vez en cien años, el torneo se lleva a cabo fuera de Suramérica!. 

Todo comienza en Santa Clara, California, el 3 de junio con el inicio de la fase de grupos del torneo y que se llevará a cabo a hasta el 14 de Junio a través de 10 ciudades de Estados Unidos. Cada grupo se jugará bajo el formato de round robin, cada equipo jugando entre sí una vez. Una victoria le dará a un equipo 3 puntos, un empate 1 punto, y una derrota vale 0 puntos. Los dos mejores equipos de cada grupo avanzarán a los cuartos de final. Los países participantes son: USA, Colombia, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Brasil, Ecuador, Haití, Perú, México, Uruguay, Jamaica, Venezuela,  Argentina, Chile, Panamá y Bolivia. Quien será el campeón?

 Los cuartos de final se llevarán a cabo del 16 al 18 de Junio. El primer lugar y en segundo lugar de cada grupo jugarán entre sí (Grupo A vs. Grupo B y Grupo C vs. Grupo D). Los ganadores pasarán a las semifinales.

 En las semifinales, que tendrán lugar del 21 al 22 de junio, los ganadores del partido numero 25 y 27 jugarán entre sí, así como los ganadores del juego numero 26 y 28. Los ganadores de estas series, obtendrán un lugar en la final, mientras que los otros dos equipos disputarán en el partido por el Tercer Lugar.

 El partido por el Tercer Lugar se jugará el 25 de junio en la University of Phoenix Stadium en Glendale, Arizona.
La final de la Copa América Centenario se jugará el 26 de junio en el MetLife Stadium en East Rutherford, New Jersey. El ganador del partido será declarado el campeón de esta edición especial de celebración de la Copa América!

ECUADOR MUESTRA SU CINE CONTEMPORÁNEO EN NYC

Todo a punto para la 2da edición del Ecuadorian Film Festival New York
Ecuador desembarca en la Gran Manzana con lo más novedoso de su cine.

La industria del cine en Ecuador sigue en ascenso. De producir una o dos películas al año, eran los días de "Ratas, ratones y rateros" (1999), de Sebastián Cordero, y "Que tan lejos" (2006) de Tania Hermida, hoy el pequeño país andino -y es de aplaudir- realiza anualmente entre 15 y 20 films. Que no es poco. La creación de la Ley de Fomento de Cine Nacional de 2006 y su brazo, el Consejo Nacional de Cine (CNCine), son claves para esta realidad que, junto a una nueva generación de directores, contribuyen al boom. Son diez años de cine nacional y for export. Ya no lo mira de lejos: Ecuador llegó para quedarse en la "silver screen". 



En Nueva York, por suerte, podemos disfrutar de esa buena cosecha Tricolor. Esta semana empieza la 2da edición del Ecuadorian Film Festival New York (EFFNY), del 2 al 5 de junio. Organizado por Maravilla y bajo el lema “¡Un Ecuador!”, la fiesta incluye diez largometrajes y 17 cortos a proyectarse en salas de Manhattan, Brooklyn y Queens. Todas las películas son en español con subtítulos en inglés.
La noche de apertura de EFFNY, el jueves 2 de junio/8:00pm (Village East Cinema de Manhattan) se presentará “UIO: Sácame a pasear” de la cineasta quiteña Micaela Rueda y que aborda la relación sentimental entre dos chicas adolescentes. Además de Rueda, participan otras directoras mujeres.



"Me parece importante que se pueda mostrar el trabajo cinematográfico del Ecuador en Nueva York, al igual como hacen otros países latinos, especialmente hoy en día donde cada vez hay más cine latino ganando premios por el mundo y mostrándose en festivales importantes. El cine crea cultura, memoria, identidad y promueve al país en términos de turismo al igual que puede tener el potencial de ser una locación bellisima e interesante para producciones internacionales", dijo Cristina Morrison, cantautora y actriz de amplia trayectoria en Ecuador. (Su nueva película, "Translúcido" -no es parte del EFFNY- del director venezolano Leonardo Zelig, se estrenará proximamente en nuestro ciudad. El elenco incluye al popular actor y modelo ecuatoriano Roberto Manrique. )

El festival incluye asimismo un bloque de cortos gratis, el domingo 5 de junio, desde las 12:30pm, en el Queens Museum, para disfrutar en familia.
Vale destacar que EFFNY donará la mitad del dinero recaudado por las ventas de boletos a la
Ecuadorian Shelter Initiative y su campaña de financiación colectiva para las víctimas del sismo que azotó al país en abril pasado. También se puede hacer una donación directa en EcuadorianShelterInitiative.org

“UIO. Sácame a pasear” (2016), Micaela Rueda

Una apuesta atrevida de la cineasta quiteña, quien aborda un tema espinoso para la conservadora y muy católica sociedad ecuatoriana. Sara cursa el último año de la secundaria, no tiene muchos amigos, se refugia en su propio mundo, atrapada entre una madre dominante y un padre distraído. Pero todo cambia cuando conoce a Andrea, su nueva compañera de clase, con la que comenzará una relación íntima en secreto. ¿Cuáles serán las consecuencias de ese idilio? ¿Se lo contará a sus padres?



“Ciudad de los sueños” (2016), de Betty Bastidas

Es una cinta de corte futbolero, dirigida por Bastidas, joven cineasta de origen ecuatoriano y residente en Nueva York. Justo en tiempos de la Copa América Centenario llega esta inspiradora historia de tres jóvenes futbolistas que persiguen el éxito a pesar de los desafíos. Entrelazados con esos sueños atléticos están las esperanzas de los afro-ecuatorianos de un pueblo, el Valle del Chota, donde el fútbol es más que un deporte. Allí, es un medio de reconocimiento y respeto.

Esta película, con la participación de los conocidos futbolistas Ulises de la Cruz, Aníbal Chalá y Carlos Maldonado, se presenta como parte del Soccer Film Festival.

“Vengo volviendo” (2016), de Isabel Rodas y Gabriel Páez
Ismael, criado por su abuela, vive una lucha interna marcada por la migración y solo piensa en viajar a los Estados Unidos. Después de haber pactado la fecha y el costo del viaje, la vida será la responsable de poner frente a Ismael lo que más teme: su destino.

BROOKLYN

“Un secreto en la caja” (2015), Javier Izquierdo

Este documental navega por la vida y obra de Marcelo Chiriboga (1933-1990), destacado escritor ecuatoriano que integró el llamado “boom latinoamericano” (ese élite club que formaron García Márquez, Jorge L. Borges, Vargas Llosa, Donoso, Fuentes, Cortázar) pero quien fue desconocido en su propio país hasta el día de hoy.

“Persistencia” (2015), Fernando Mieles Peña

En la Antártida, un artista plástico prepara su instalación de arte. En paralelo científicos realizan investigaciones. Aquí no hay diálogo, entrevista o explicación alguna. Acciones aparentemente sin sentido se tejen en el tiempo. Es un estudio sobre la persistencia de los actos creativos. Sobre la sensación y la idea. Sobre el ser, el estar y el hacer. Una experiencia sensorial. En solo 46 minutos, Mieles nos transporta por un poema audiovisual hecho de hielo, nieve y viento.

“Sed” (2016), Joe Houlberg

Sara tiene 23 años y está ciega desde los 10. Un viaje a la antigua hacienda familiar con su prima y sus respectivos novios empieza bien, pero una vez allí, no todo es lo que parece. La atmósfera de abandono de este lugar estancado en el tiempo es el incómodo escenario que provoca un juego de los sentidos, y enfrenta a los viajeros con sus deseos más reprimidos. Sara debe mirarse a través de la inocencia de su niñez para entender su pasado, y hallar la manera de ganar este juego del ver.


“María y el araña” (2013), María Victoria Menis

María tiene trece años y vive en una villa miseria de Buenos Aires junto a su abuela y el oscuro compañero de esta. Candidata a recibir una beca para continuar su escolaridad, María está terminando la primaria y trabaja al mismo tiempo en el metro. Allí conoce a un chico de 17 años que se gana la vida haciendo malabares disfrazado de Hombre Araña. A medida que el amor crece entre ambos, se irá descubriendo dentro de la casa de María, el entretejido de un lazo siniestro que la mantiene sometida.

“Y en el centro de la tierra había fuego”, (2013), Bernhard Hetzenauer.

Presentada en asociación con el Austrian Cultural Forum NYC, es una de las apuestas fuertes del festival, pero fuera de competencia. Vera Kohn, terapeuta discípula del zen Karlfried Dürckheim (ex simpatizante del Nazismo) y pionera del budismo zen en Ecuador, narra su huida de Praga en el verano de 1939 hacia Ecuador. Los setenta y más años que han transcurrido desde entonces no han convertido al pasado en ceniza. Quito se vuelve el escenario para enfrentarlo con el presente, la culpa y la aceptación.

“Vengo volviendo” (2016), de Isabel Rodas y Gabriel Páez

“Instantes de campaña” (2015), Tomás Astudillo

El 17 de Febrero de 2013, Rafael Correa gana por tercera vez las elecciones presidenciales del Ecuador. 42 días antes, emprende una campaña frenética al ritmo de discursos y canciones. Como parte del PEN World Voices Festival, que este año tiene a México como invitado de honor, se presentará un verdadero banquete literario a la comunidad. En el año de la Copa América Centenario, a realizarse en EEUU del 3 al 26 de Junio próximo, el escritor argentino Luciano Wernicke hablará sobre este libro, que desde ya se perfila como lectura imperdible para los fanáticos futboleros. Wernicke, nacido en Buenos Aires y con un extenso curriculum en el periodismo deportivo, recopila anécdotas, casos increíbles y curiosidades de los primeros 100 años del popular torneo continental, el más antiguo del mundo a nivel de selecciones. “H.O.M.E”: cine de la calle en primer plano. David Maldonado dirige esta película de sueños inmigrantes.

Fue una de las cintas más aplaudidas en el reciente Queens World Film Festival (QWFF). De hecho, ganó el premio a Best Narrative Feature y el próximo 15 de abril se proyectará en el marco del Manhattan Film Festival. Hay planes también para presentarla en el próximo Ecuadorian Film Festival New York a realizarse en junio, señala Maldonado. 




“H.O.M.E.” es protagonizada por Jeremy Ray Valdéz en el papel de Danny Pérez, un joven con síndrome de Asperger (abril es el Mes de la Concientización sobre el Austismo) para quien el subway es transporte y refugio; Jesús Ochoa es Gabriel Carrera, el taxista ecuatoriano -y fanático fútbolero- que al frente de su volante recorre Queens y sueña con regresar a su país para saldar viejas cuentas familiares; Angela Lin es “la chinita” Sze Wun con quien Ochoa se cruza en Flushing. Completan el elenco Carlo Albán, Lauren Augarten y Karen Lynn Gorney. 

Escrita por Maldonado y Héctor Carosso, “H.O.M.E.” es un producto de Gashouse Films. Aborda dos historias urbanas que -sin saberlo- se comunican y conectan entre sí en una ciudad a menudo desconectada. Un esfuerzo notable de la producción (que también incluye a dos hispanas, Ingrid Matías y Vanessa Verduga) para llevar al público una película que por su temática y cinematografía urbana, ha despertado interés en el circuito cinéfolo.

¿Cuánto tiempo trabajaste en “H.O.M.E”?
La película me tomó exactamente en cinco años, comenzando en el invierno de 2011.

La noche de apertura del QWFF llevabas un cartel que decía “Pregúntenme sobre mi película”. Nos pareció muy efectivo ese mensaje….
Sí, fue coincidencia que el director del festival me pidió que levantara en el escenario ese letrero.

La directora Nora Ephron solía decir que “todo es copia”. “H.O.M.E.” tiene guiños a “Taxi Driver” de Martín Scorsese, entre otras cintas
Estoy de acuerdo con esa noción de copia pero también estoy de acuerdo con la idea de influencias, de modo que la película viene de muchas influencias sobre experiencias de la vida real. “Taxi Driver” es una referencia, como lo es “Night on Earth” y muchas más. Y también películas indies como “Man Push Cart”.

¿Cinco películas preferidas?
Hhhmm….siempre es difícil elegir, pero aquí van: “Man Push Cart”, “Prince of Broadway”, “Stations of the Elevated”,  “Killer of Sheep” y “Takeout”.

Después de recorrer el subway durante la filmación ¿Cómo lo ves ahora?
Es un laberinto que muchos de nosotros usamos para llegar de un punto A al B. Pasé muchas semanas explorando y viviendo en el subway solo para tener una experiencia sensorial y abordar todos sus detalles.

¿El síndrome de Asperger te toca de manera personal?
Tengo un amigo, Dan Compton, quien está en el espectro de autismo. Él y su familia apoyaron mucho la película y sirvieron como referencias para el desarrollo del guión.

Como director quieres llegar con tu película a todo el público pero especialmente haces un llamado a los ecuatorianos….
Sí, me gustaría llegar a la comunidad ecuatoriana de Nueva York. Nuestro personaje Gabriel es un taxista originalmente de Quito, Ecuador, que vive y trabaja en Queens. Habiendo conocido muchos taxistas, personalmente quise darles la oportunidad a esa comunidad con quien a menudo nos encontramos en la ciudad.

Luego del éxito en QWFF, ¿qué es lo próximo para “H.O.M.E.”?
Estaremos presentando la película en el 10th Annual Manhattan Film Festival. A
principios de mayo estaremos en Austin, Texas, para el 19th Annual Cine Las Américas Film Festival.

Estás organizando una cena en tu casa. ¿Quienes serían los directores invitados?
Abbas Kiarostami, David Lynch, Carlos Reygadas, Hou Hao Hsien y Apichatpong Weerasethakul

¿Mujeres?
A la mente me vienen Kelly Reichhardt, Lynne Ramsay, Lucy Molloy, Aurora Guerrero, Chantel Ackerman y Lucrecia Martel.

¿Tu próximo proyecto? 
Estoy escribiendo un guión sobre una pequeña comunidad puertorriqueña afectada por un evento trágico. También estaré trabajando en el próximo episodio de una serie de cortos experimentales de horror que se han hecho y presentado a nivel internacional.

Comienza el jolgorio cinéfolo: Havana Film Festival New York

Es la fiesta máxima del cine latinoamericano en la Gran Manzana. Havana Film Festival celebra 17 años de grandes historias que resaltan la diversidad, riqueza y voces de Cuba y América Latina.

Ya es una tradición en el circuito cultural de la ciudad. Con la llegada de la primavera y desde su primera edición en 2000, el Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY), un proyecto de American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (AFLFC), celebra al Séptimo Arte en español y portugués.  (Todas las películas en lengua extranjera están subtituladas en inglés).

Del 7 al 15 de abril, HFFNY ofrecerá un programa estelar con historias que resaltan la diversidad, costumbres, riqueza y voces de Cuba, América Latina (incluido Brasil), España, y de los hispanos en EEUU.

Las películas se proyectarán en varias salas: Directors Guild Theater (apertura y clausura), Village East Cinema (sala principal), Rey Juan Carlos I de España en NYU (KJCC), y el Instituto Cervantes, en Manhattan; The Museum of the Moving Image en Queens; y The Bronx Museum of the Arts, en el Bronx.


Un total de 18 filmes compiten por los premios Havana Star en las categorías Mejor Película, Mejor Director, Mejor Guión, Mejor Actor, Mejor Actriz y Mejor Documental.

El pasado 1o de abril, a modo de aperitivo, la fiesta cinéfola empezó con la proyección gratuita de “La rumba me llama” de Oliver Hill, como parte del programa First Fridays! del Bronx Museum of the Arts. La película narra la historia original de la rumba, desde sus primeros trazos hasta nuestros días.

Como siempre, ¡hay tanto para ver! La cartelera incluye un tributo a los actores cubanos Isabel Santos (“Vestido de Novia”, “Cuba Libre”) y Enrique Molina (“Video de Familia”, “La cosa humana”); una retrospectiva  en el vigésimo aniversario del fallecimiento del laureado cineasta Tomás Gutiérrez Alea; un conversatorio sobre cómo hacer una película en Cuba; presentación de documentales sobre la música cubana, y estrenos de filmes ganadores en Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, República Dominicana, El Salvador, Guatemala, México, Perú, Uruguay e hispanos en EEUU. 



“Sin duda el cine latinoamericano está teniendo un momento extraordinario. Su fortaleza viene, no solo de la frescura de las formas encontradas en cada película, sino también por la audacia y osadía de sus cineastas”, comenta Diana Vargas, directora  artística de HFFNY. “En nuestro programa del 2016, estamos ofreciendo una mirada panorámica y amplia, que ofrece historias íntimas, cotidianas hasta relatos de relevancia nacional que nos retan a la reflexión y a expandir nuestra visión del mundo”.

Isabel Santos es otra luminaria del cine cubano y, como tal, HFFNY rinde homenaje a su destacada trayectoria. Sus créditos incluyen  “Vestido de novia”, de la directora Marilyn Solaya, “Cuba Libre”, de Jorge Luis Sánchez, y “El camino de la vida”, un auto-documental. Santos y el cinematógrafo Rafael Solía participarán del panel “El actor y la cámara”, moderado por Louis Perego de Prime Latino Media. Habrá una recepción tras la proyección de las cintas y el panel.

PRESENTACIÓN DE LIBRO: “La Biblia del cinéfolo”
Por que la literatura y el cine son aliadas y cómplices eternas en la creación artística, el martes 12 de abril, 6:00pm, en el Center King Juan Carlos I de NYU, será la presentación de “La Biblia del cinéfolo”, libro del reconocido crítico Luciano Castillo, director del Cuban Film Archives. Moderadora Michelle Farrell.

El programa se complementa con la proyección de los cortos “El arte del tabaco” (1974), de Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, y “Titón, de La Habana a la Guantanamera” (2008) de Mirtha Ibarra: A las 7pm habrá un panel para abordar el tema de filmar en la isla. Participan los directores Bob Yari (“Papa”), Asori Soto y Catherine Murphy.

El miércoles 13, desde las 5:45pm, se presenta el corto “Las doce sillas”, de Gutiérrez Alea, y a las 7:00pm “Video de familia”, de Humberto Padrón y con la presencia del actor Enrique Molina, otro de los homenajeados.

LLEGÓ EL MOMENTO: ¡TODOS AL HFFNY!

El jueves 7 de abril, desde las 5:30pm en Directors Guild Theater (110 W. 57th St, Manhattan), habrá despliegue de alfombra roja con el estreno de la exitosa película “El acompañante”, un drama sobre la epidemia del SIDA en La Habana a finales de los 80. Su director, Pavel Giroud (“La edad de la peseta”, “Omertá”), estará presente junto al protagonista, y ex vocalista de Orishas, Yotuel Romero.

La jornada de clausura, el viernes 15 de abril, 6:00 pm, llega con la entrega de los Havana Star Prize, seguido de “Papa”, la primera  película de Hollywood filmada en Cuba desde 1959. Es la historia de un joven periodista que se hace amigo de Ernest y Mary Hemingway y es testigo de la caída del célebre escritor con la revolución cubana de fondo. El director Bob Yari estará presente para conversar con el público.

“Viva” (2015)

Con el Oscarizado Benicio del Toro al frente como productor ejecutivo, esta película llega con muchas luces, sin duda. Es la historia de un joven que trabaja como peluquero y maquillador de “drags” en La Habana, y su lucha interna: decidir entre su identidad sexual y hacer realidad sus sueños y/o reconstruir la relación con su papá. Fue la apuesta de Irlanda en los recientes Oscar en la categoría de lengua extranjera. Su protagonista Héctor Medina estará presente para charlar con el público.

“Eva no duerme” (2015)

Eva Duarte de Perón, Evita, mito en vida y, más aun, en la muerte. Esta película narra la travesía de su cuerpo errante por Europa, tras morir en 1952 víctima del cáncer, hasta su regreso al país 25 años más tarde. Una de las historias más controversiales y misteriosas de la historia contemporánea argentina. Protagoniza Gael García Bernal.

“Mi amiga del parque” (2016)

La cruda y larga guerra civil que azotó Centroamérica en los años 70 y 80, dejó miles de muertos y cadáveres sin identificar. Este conmovedor documental gravita por esos restos sin nombre, y es la lucha de un grupo de madres que buscan y luchan por la justicia y la verdad. The film series that brought us the likes of Pedro Almodóvar, the New Directors/New Films continues this year with another promising showcase of emerging Latino talent and from around the world. And what a selection of Latino talent we have: Federico Veiroj,  Salomé Lamas, Julio Hernández Cordón, Anita Rocha da Silveira, Pietro Marcello, Gabriel Mascaro, Pascale Breton and Lucile Hadžihalilović, are all part of the festival. Some other emerging talent like Josh Kriegman & Elyse Steinberg, Tony Stone, Omer Fast, Raam Reddy, Anna Rose Holmer, Tamer El Said, Kirsten Johnson, and Babak Anvari are also part of it. These are our highlights. * The Apostate / El apóstata. Federico Veiroj, Spain/France/Uruguay, 2015, 80mSpanish with English subtitles


 With wry humor and deep conviction, Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Veiroj (A Useful Life, ND/NF 2010) observes a young Spaniard’s maddening efforts to abandon the Catholic Church. Petitioning the local bishop in Madrid to hand over his baptismal records, the philosophy student is soon confronted with a stubborn bureaucracy and comically agonized tests of his fidelity and patience. Scenes of pithy theological discussion (performed by the film’s excellent ensemble cast) are interspersed with oneiric flights of imagination, cohering to produce a work that is by turns seriously philosophical and irreverently funny. While Veiroj’s tone may be more gently ironic than that of Luis Buñuel (his spiritual forebear), The Apostatenonetheless traces in bracing fashion the competing forces of conformity and rebellion, spiritual yearning and carnal desire, at war within us all.


* Eldorado XXI: Salomé Lamas, Portugal/France, 2016, 125m Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara with English subtitles



Salomé Lamas’s Eldorado XXI immerses the viewer in the breathtaking views and extreme conditions of La Rinconada in the Peruvian Andes, the highest-elevation permanent human settlement in the world. Here, some 17,000 feet above sea level, miners face misery and lawlessness in the hopes of striking gold, chewing coca leaves to stave off exhaustion. They toil for weeks without pay under the inhumane lottery system known as cachorreo, gambling on an eventual fortune if they can survive the despoiled landscape long enough. Life in this remotest outpost of civilization seems to unfold in the grip of an illusion, and the film itself frequently resembles a hallucination, not least in an extended tour-de-force shot that reveals an endless stream of miners trekking up and down the mountain as we hear radio reports and stories of their daily lives. Full of unforgettable images and sounds, Eldorado XXI is a transporting, fundamentally mysterious experience that renews the possibilities of the ethnographic film. North American Premiere


* I Promise You Anarchy / Te prometo anarquía Julio Hernández Cordón, Mexico/Germany, 2015, 100m    Spanish with English subtitles.


Miguel (Diego Calva) and Johnny (Eduardo Eliseo Martinez) are in deep. Badass skater-bros, crazy-in-love blood hustlers, they’re flowing inevitably toward a sea swimming with narco-sharks. This is Mexico City today, and for two boys from different worlds but the same house—Johnny is the son of Miguel’s family maid—there is no future. On the days they do have at their disposal, they will live as hard as they can, even if it means total destruction for everyone around them. A harrowing vision of the 21st century replete with garishly lit sex scenes, inebriated slow motion, and an exhilarating, eclectic pop soundtrack, and winner of numerous prizes at festivals in Latin America, Julio Hernández Cordón’s film is exploding with beats, sweat, and pain—an ecstatic and anguished portrait of youth teetering on the brink of nihilism. U.S. Premiere


* Kill Me Please / Mate-me por favor Anita Rocha da Silveira, Brazil/Argentina, 2015, 101mPortuguese with English subtitles.


Anita Rocha da Silveira’s vibrantly morbid debut feature is a coming-of-age story in which passive aggression on the handball court, jealousy among friends, and teenage angst unfold in the foreground of a slasher flick. In Rio de Janeiro’s Barra da Tijuca—a newly formed upper-middle-class neighborhood of car-lined thoroughfares, gigantic malls, and monolithic white condos—a clique of teenage girls become fearfully captivated by a string of gruesome murders. The most fascinated is Bia (Valentina Herszage), whose own sexual discoveries evolve alongside the mounting deaths in this skewed world of wild colors and transformative desires. With nods to Brian De Palma’s Carrie, Jacques Tourneur’s Cat People, and the atmospheres of David Lynch, Rocha da Silveira’s contribution to the genre is nonetheless entirely her own.


* Lost and Beautiful / Bella e perduta. Pietro Marcello, Italy/France, 2015, 87m. Italian with English subtitles.


Pietro Marcello continues his intrepid work along the borderline of fiction and documentary with this beautiful and beguiling film, by turns neorealist and fabulist, worthy of Pasolini in its matter-of-fact lyricism and political conviction. Shot on expired 16mm film stock and freely incorporating archival footage and folkloric tropes, it begins as a portrait of the shepherd Tommaso, a local hero in the Campania region of southern Italy, who volunteered to look after the abandoned Bourbon palace of Carditello despite the state’s apathy and threats from the Mafia. Tommaso suffers a fatal heart attack in the course of shooting, and Marcello’s bold and generous response is to grant his subject’s dying wish: for a Pulcinella straight out of the commedia dell’arte to appear on the scene and rescue a buffalo calf from the palace. With Lost and Beautiful, a documentary that soars into the realm of myth, Marcello has crafted a uniquely multifaceted and enormously moving work of political cine-poetry. * Neon Bull / Boi neon. Gabriel Mascaro, Brazil/Uruguay/Netherlands, 2015, 101m. Portuguese with English subtitles.


A rodeo movie unlike any other, Gabriel Mascaro’s Venice and Toronto prize-winning follow-up to his 2014 fiction debut August Winds tracks handsome cowboy Iremar (Juliano Cazarré) as he travels around to work at vaquejadarodeos, a Brazilian variation on the sport in which two men on horseback attempt to bring a bull down by its tail. Iremar dreams of becoming a fashion designer, creating flamboyant outfits for his co-worker, single mother Galega (Maeve Jinkings). Along with Galega’s daughter Cacá and a bullpen worker named Zé, these complex characters, drawn with tremendous compassion and not an ounce of condescension, make up an unorthodox family, on the move across the northeast Brazilian countryside. Sensitive to matters of gender and class, and culminating in one of the most audacious and memorable sex scenes in recent memory, Neon Bull is a quietly affirming exploration of desire and labor, a humane and sensual study of bodies at work and at play. In her first feature since her distinctive 2004 debut, Illumination, Pascale Breton returns to her native region of Brittany for this rapturous ensemble film about the persistence of the past in the present. Françoise (Valérie Dréville), an accomplished art historian, leaves Paris to teach at her alma mater in Rennes. Most of her former schoolmates never left town, it turns out, and are curiously eyeing her return. Meanwhile, Ion (Kaou Langoët), a sensitive geography student, falls in love with the blind Lydie (Manon Evenat), and clashes with his estranged, now-homeless mother, Moon (Elina Löwensohn), one of Françoise’s closest friends from the old punk-rock days… As these idiosyncratic, richly drawn characters intersect, their points of view overlap and the tricks of time and memory become apparent. Bursting with ideas and emotion, Suite Armoricaine is a work of symphonic scope and grand themes (love and death, art and beauty, language and music) that finds deep wells of meaning in the smallest and most surprising details and gestures. North American Premiere

* Evolution / Évolution. Lucile Hadžihalilović, France, 2015, 81m. French with English subtitles
On a remote island, populated solely by women and young boys, 10-year-old Nicolas plays with other children, but not in a carefree manner. And while the women may have maternal instincts, something is awry: they gather on the beach at night for a strange ritual that Nicolas struggles to understand, and the boys are taken to a hospital regularly for mysterious treatments. And water is everywhere. This is the stuff nightmares are made of, and Nicolas appears to be living out one of his own. In the follow-up to her directorial debut, Innocence, Lucile Hadžihalilović continues her exploration of growing up—where we’re going and what we’re leaving behind. As Nicolas discovers more, feelings of fear, melancholy, and also eroticism bubble to the surface. Hadžihalilović has created a dark fantasy that we are invited to explore and make our own discoveries, however macabre they may be. An Alchemy release.

* Neither Heaven Nor Earth [Formerly titled The Wakhan Front] / Ni le ciel ni la terre. Clément Cogitore, France/Belgium, 2015, 100m French and Persian with English subtitles
The ingenious conceit of Neither Heaven Nor Earth, a critical success at Cannes, is to transform the Afghan battlefield—dust and boredom and jolts of explosive violence—into the backdrop for a metaphysical thriller. Jérémie Renier stars as a French army commander who begins to lose the loyalty of his company, as well as his sanity, when soldiers start mysteriously disappearing one by one. Rarely is the madness of war conveyed on screen with such simmering tension and existential fear. Rarely, too, is the ignorance and mistrust between cultures—are the shepherd villagers innocent civilians or Taliban spies?—limned with such poetic insight. U.S. Premiere

* Weiner. Josh Kriegman & Elyse Steinberg, USA, 2016, 100m


Truly compelling vérité filmmaking requires several key factors to coalesce: intimate access, cinematographic acumen, genuine inquisitiveness, and fascinating subjects. Directors Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg brilliantly meld these elements to create one of the most engaging and entertaining works of nonfiction film in recent years. A truly 21st-century hybrid of classic documentary techniques and reality-based dramatic storytelling, Weiner follows the mayoral election bid of former New York Congressman Anthony Weiner in 2013, an attempted comeback that, as we all know now, was doomed to failure. By turns Shakespearean in its tragedy (it’s clear that Weiner and his inner circle have real political talent) and Christopher Guest-ian in its comedic portrayal of what devolves into a Waiting for Guffman–esque campaign, this is the perfect political film for our time. * Peter and the Farm. Tony Stone, USA, 2016, 92m

Peter Dunning is a rugged individualist in the extreme, a hard-drinking loner and former artist who has burned bridges with his wives and children and whose only company, even on harsh winter nights, are the sheep, cows, and pigs he tends on his Vermont farm. Peter is also one of the most complicated, sympathetic documentary subjects to come along in some time, a product of the 1960s counterculture whose poetic idealism has since soured. For all his candor, he slips into drunken self-destructive habits, cursing the splendors of a pastoral landscape that he has spent decades nurturing. Imbued with an aching tenderness, Tony Stone’s documentary is both haunting and heartbreaking, a mosaic of its singular subject’s transitory memories and reflections—however funny, tragic, or angry they may be.


* Remainder. Omer Fast, UK/Germany, 2015, 97m.


The feature debut by celebrated video artist Omer Fast is a striking, stylish adaptation of English novelist Tom McCarthy’s landmark 2005 novel. Set in London, the narrative kicks off when the anonymous protagonist (Tom Sturridge) is struck by a large object plummeting from the sky. When he comes to, he has no recollection of what happened, and a reparations settlement nets him millions of pounds. The man channels these resources toward creating preposterously ambitious reconstructions of his own dim memories, in the process raising a host of questions about the relationship between reality and simulation, the minute details essential to our perception of places and events, and the limits of artistic monomania. Fast, who has explored similar themes in his own work, adapts McCarthy’s idea-packed novel with lucidity and wit, and Sturridge is mesmerizing as an existential hero searching the void for a trace of meaning. North American Premiere
* Cameraperson. Kirsten Johnson, USA, 2016, 102m



How much of one’s self can be captured in the images shot of and for others? Kirsten Johnson may be a first-time (solo) feature-film director, but her work as a director of photography and camera operator has helped earn her documentary collaborators (Laura Poitras, Michael Moore, Kirby Dick, Barbara Kopple) nearly every accolade and award possible. Recontextualizing the stunning images inside, around, and beyond the works she has shot, Johnson constructs a visceral and vibrant self-portrait of an artist who has traveled the globe, venturing into landscapes and lives that bear the scars of trauma both active and historic. Rigorous yet nimble in its ability to move from heartache to humor, Cameraperson provides an essential lens on the things that make us human.


* Short Stay. Ted Fendt, USA, 2016, 35mm, 61m

Multi-hyphenate Ted Fendt delivers on the promise of his acclaimed short films without sacrificing an ounce of his singular charm and rigor. Shooting on 16mm (blown up to 35mm), the writer-director-editor here focuses on Mike (Mike MacCherone), an ambitionless resident of Haddonfield, New Jersey, who finds himself subletting a friend’s room in Philadelphia and (ineptly) covering his shifts at a by-donation walking-tour company. Mike floats, as if in a trance, from one low-key comic folly to another, each one a strange and subtle moral tale. Fendt’s economy of expression, expert handling of his nonprofessional cast, and incomparable nose for the tragicomic dimension of the everyday distinguishes Short Stay as a truly anomalous work in contemporary American cinema: a film made entirely on its maker’s terms. North American Premiere


*Thithi. Raam Reddy, India/USA, 2015, 120m Hindi with English subtitles

Raam Reddy’s bold, vibrant first feature is closer to Émile Zola than it is to Bollywood. Filmed in India’s southern Karnataka state with all nonprofessional actors, the sprawling narrative follows three generations of sons following the death of the family’s patriarch, their 101-year-old grandfather known as “Century Gowda.” The men’s respective vices—ranging from greed to womanizing to cut-and-dry escapism—bring deliciously comedic misadventures to their village in the days leading up to the thithi, a funeral celebration traditionally held 11 days after a death. This incisive portrait of a community in a time of radical change (while some are looking after their sheep, others are lost in their cell phones) yields exemplary humanist comedy. Winner of two awards at the Locarno Film Festival, the film equally affirms the advent of a new realism within Indian cinema, as well as an engaging new voice in contemporary world cinema.


* Tikkun. Avishai Sivan, Israel, 2015, 120m Hebrew and Yiddish with English subtitles

In Avishai Sivan’s intense and provocative Tikkun, a prizewinner at the Jerusalem and Locarno Film Festivals, an ultra-Orthodox Yeshiva student experiences a crisis of faith—and visions of earthly delights—when his father brings him back from the brink of death. Was the young man’s improbable survival a violation of God’s will, or was it “tikkun,” a way toward enlightenment and redemption? Sivan imbues the narrative with an indeterminate, hypnotic blend of black comedy and alienated modernism, effecting a singularly uncanny atmosphere. Nonprofessional actor Aharon Traitel, himself a former Hasidic Jew, gives a nuanced, knowing performance as the anguished prodigy, and the black-and-white chiaroscuro photography casts the devoutly private, regimented Hasidic community of old Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim in a morally shaded light. * Under the Shadow. Babak Anvari, UK/Jordan/Qatar, 2016, 84m

It’s eight years into the Iran-Iraq War, but the troubles of wife and mother in Tehran have only just begun. Shideh (Narges Rashidi) is thwarted in her attempts to return to medical school because of past political activities. And as Iraqi bombs close in, her husband is sent off to serve in the military, neighbors begin to flee, and she is left alone with her young daughter, Dorsa, who refuses to be separated from her favorite doll. At first, Dorsa’s tantrums seem to simply be the complaints of a cranky child. But soon she’s in conversation with an invisible woman—no imaginary friend, this one—and the cracks in the walls and ceilings of their apartment could just be the result of something more than air raids. And what is that she sees down the hall, from the corner of her eye? Though Shideh is a woman of science, she begins to suspect that a malevolent spirit, a djinn, is stalking them. A political horror story that rises up from the rubble of war, Babak Anvari’s feature debut boasts a terrific performance by Rashidi as a woman with more than one war going on in her home and in her head, who must save her daughter from dangers both physical and supernatural.
* The Fits. Anna Rose Holmer, USA, 2015, 72m.


The transition from girlhood to young womanhood is one that’s nearly invisible in cinema. Enter Anna Rose Holmer, whose complex and absorbing narrative feature debut elegantly depicts a captivating 11-year-old’s journey of discovery. Toni (played by the majestically named Royalty Hightower) is a budding boxer drawn to a group of dancers training at the same rec center in Cincinnati. She begins aligning herself with one of the two troupes, the Lionesses, becoming immersed in their world, which Holmer conveys with a hypnotic sense of rhythm and a rare gift for rendering physicality—evident most of all when a mysterious, convulsive condition begins to afflict a number of girls. Set entirely within the intimate confines of a few familiar settings (public school, the gym), and pulsating with bodies in motion, The Fits encourages us to recall the confused magic of entering the second decade of life. * Behemoth / Beixi moshuo. Zhao Liang, China/France, 2015, 91m. Mandarin with English subtitles
Political documentarian Zhao Liang draws inspiration from The Divine Comedy for this simultaneously intoxicating and terrifying glimpse at the ravages wrought upon Inner Mongolia by its coal and iron industries. A poetic voiceover speaks of the insatiability of desire on top of stunning images of landscapes (and their decimation), machines (and their spectacular functions), and people (and the toll of their labor). Interspersed are sublime tableaux of a prone nude body—asleep? just born? dead?—posed against a refracted horizon. A wholly absorbing guided tour of exploding hillsides, dank mine shafts, cacophonous factories, and vacant cities, Behemoth builds upon Zhao’s previous exposés (2009’s Petition, 2007’s Crime and Punishment) by combining his muckraking streak with a painterly vision of a social and ecological nightmare otherwise unfolding out of sight, out of mind. Winner of the environmental Green Drop Award at the Venice Film Festival. North American Premiere


* Demon. Marcin Wrona, Poland/Israel, 2015, 94m. English, Polish, and Yiddish with English subtitles

Newly arrived from England to marry his fiancée Zaneta, Peter has been given a gift of her family’s ramshackle country house in rural Poland. It’s a total fixer-upper, and while inspecting the premises on the eve of the wedding, he falls into a pile of human remains. The ceremony proceeds, but strange things begin to happen... During the wild reception, Peter begins to come undone, and a dybbuk, that iconic ancient figure from Jewish folklore, takes a toehold in this present-day celebration—for a very particular reason, as it turns out. The final work by Marcin Wrona, who died just as Demon was set to premiere in Poland, is an eerie, richly atmospheric film—part absurdist comedy, part love story—that scares, amuses, and charms in equal measure. Winner of Best Horror Feature at Fantastic Fest. An Orchard release.


* Donald Cried. Kris Avedisian, USA, 2016, 85m.

Trust me, you can’t go home again. Kris Avedisian’s unhinged first feature is a brilliant twist on the family-reunion melodrama and the classic buddy comedy. Returning after 20 years to Warwick, Rhode Island, for his grandmother’s funeral, Peter Latang (Jesse Wakeman), now a slick city financier, has to endure a blast from the past and relive some very cringeworthy moments when hanging out with his former high-school bestie, the obnoxious Donald Treebeck (Avedisian). By turns depressing and funny while subtly shifting our sympathies thanks to sharp dialogue and extremely well-written characters, Donald Cried can perhaps best be summed up as The Color Wheel meets Planes, Trains and Automobiles


* In the Last Days of the City / Akher Ayam El Madina. Tamer El Said, Egypt/Germany/Great Britain/United Arab Emirates, 2016, 118m. Arabic with English subtitles.


This film within a film is a haunting yet lyric chronicle of recent years in the Arab world, where revolutions seemed to spark hope for change and yield further instability in one stroke. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner, The Square) plays the protagonist of Tamer El Said’s ambitious feature debut, a filmmaker in Cairo attempting to capture the zeitgeist of his city as the world changes around him—from personal love and loss to the fall of the Mubarak regime. Throughout, friends send footage and stories from Berlin, Baghdad, and Beirut, creating a powerful, multilayered meditation on togetherness, the tactile hold of cities, and the meaning of homeland. Shot in 2008 and completed this year, the film explores the weight of cinematic images as record and storytelling in an ongoing time of change. North American Premiere
