Comienza el jolgorio cinéfolo: Havana Film Festival New York

Es la fiesta máxima del cine latinoamericano en la Gran Manzana. Havana Film Festival celebra 17 años de grandes historias que resaltan la diversidad, riqueza y voces de Cuba y América Latina.

Ya es una tradición en el circuito cultural de la ciudad. Con la llegada de la primavera y desde su primera edición en 2000, el Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY), un proyecto de American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (AFLFC), celebra al Séptimo Arte en español y portugués. (Todas las películas en lengua extranjera están subtituladas en inglés).
Del 7 al 15 de abril, HFFNY ofrecerá un programa estelar con historias que resaltan la diversidad, costumbres, riqueza y voces de Cuba, América Latina (incluido Brasil), España, y de los hispanos en EEUU.
Las películas se proyectarán en varias salas: Directors Guild Theater (apertura y clausura), Village East Cinema (sala principal), Rey Juan Carlos I de España en NYU (KJCC), y el Instituto Cervantes, en Manhattan; The Museum of the Moving Image en Queens; y The Bronx Museum of the Arts, en el Bronx.
Un total de 18 filmes compiten por los premios Havana Star en las categorías Mejor Película, Mejor Director, Mejor Guión, Mejor Actor, Mejor Actriz y Mejor Documental.
El pasado 1o de abril, a modo de aperitivo, la fiesta cinéfola empezó con la proyección gratuita de “La rumba me llama” de Oliver Hill, como parte del programa First Fridays! del Bronx Museum of the Arts. La película narra la historia original de la rumba, desde sus primeros trazos hasta nuestros días.
Como siempre, ¡hay tanto para ver! La cartelera incluye un tributo a los actores cubanos Isabel Santos (“Vestido de Novia”, “Cuba Libre”) y Enrique Molina (“Video de Familia”, “La cosa humana”); una retrospectiva en el vigésimo aniversario del fallecimiento del laureado cineasta Tomás Gutiérrez Alea; un conversatorio sobre cómo hacer una película en Cuba; presentación de documentales sobre la música cubana, y estrenos de filmes ganadores en Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, República Dominicana, El Salvador, Guatemala, México, Perú, Uruguay e hispanos en EEUU.
“Sin duda el cine latinoamericano está teniendo un momento extraordinario. Su fortaleza viene, no solo de la frescura de las formas encontradas en cada película, sino también por la audacia y osadía de sus cineastas”, comenta Diana Vargas, directora artística de HFFNY. “En nuestro programa del 2016, estamos ofreciendo una mirada panorámica y amplia, que ofrece historias íntimas, cotidianas hasta relatos de relevancia nacional que nos retan a la reflexión y a expandir nuestra visión del mundo”.
EVENTOS ESPECIALES: ENTRADA LIBRE Y GRATUITA
Isabel Santos es otra luminaria del cine cubano y, como tal, HFFNY rinde homenaje a su destacada trayectoria. Sus créditos incluyen “Vestido de novia”, de la directora Marilyn Solaya, “Cuba Libre”, de Jorge Luis Sánchez, y “El camino de la vida”, un auto-documental. Santos y el cinematógrafo Rafael Solía participarán del panel “El actor y la cámara”, moderado por Louis Perego de Prime Latino Media. Habrá una recepción tras la proyección de las cintas y el panel.

PRESENTACIÓN DE LIBRO: “La Biblia del cinéfolo”
Por que la literatura y el cine son aliadas y cómplices eternas en la creación artística, el martes 12 de abril, 6:00pm, en el Center King Juan Carlos I de NYU, será la presentación de “La Biblia del cinéfolo”, libro del reconocido crítico Luciano Castillo, director del Cuban Film Archives. Moderadora Michelle Farrell.
El programa se complementa con la proyección de los cortos “El arte del tabaco” (1974), de Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, y “Titón, de La Habana a la Guantanamera” (2008) de Mirtha Ibarra: A las 7pm habrá un panel para abordar el tema de filmar en la isla. Participan los directores Bob Yari (“Papa”), Asori Soto y Catherine Murphy.
El miércoles 13, desde las 5:45pm, se presenta el corto “Las doce sillas”, de Gutiérrez Alea, y a las 7:00pm “Video de familia”, de Humberto Padrón y con la presencia del actor Enrique Molina, otro de los homenajeados.

LLEGÓ EL MOMENTO: ¡TODOS AL HFFNY!
El jueves 7 de abril, desde las 5:30pm en Directors Guild Theater (110 W. 57th St, Manhattan), habrá despliegue de alfombra roja con el estreno de la exitosa película “El acompañante”, un drama sobre la epidemia del SIDA en La Habana a finales de los 80. Su director, Pavel Giroud (“La edad de la peseta”, “Omertá”), estará presente junto al protagonista, y ex vocalista de Orishas, Yotuel Romero.
La jornada de clausura, el viernes 15 de abril, 6:00 pm, llega con la entrega de los Havana Star Prize, seguido de “Papa”, la primera película de Hollywood filmada en Cuba desde 1959. Es la historia de un joven periodista que se hace amigo de Ernest y Mary Hemingway y es testigo de la caída del célebre escritor con la revolución cubana de fondo. El director Bob Yari estará presente para conversar con el público.

“El acompañante” (2015)

El actor y protagonista de la cinta, Yotuel Romero, junto al director Giroud estarán presentes para diálogar con el público los días 7 (apertura del festival) y 9 de abril (en Museum of the Moving Image en Queens). Este drama aborda la epidemia del SIDA en La Habana a finales de los 80, cuando Cuba escondió la epidemia tras un muro.

“Viva” (2015)

Con el Oscarizado Benicio del Toro al frente como productor ejecutivo, esta película llega con muchas luces, sin duda. Es la historia de un joven que trabaja como peluquero y maquillador de “drags” en La Habana, y su lucha interna: decidir entre su identidad sexual y hacer realidad sus sueños y/o reconstruir la relación con su papá. Fue la apuesta de Irlanda en los recientes Oscar en la categoría de lengua extranjera. Su protagonista Héctor Medina estará presente para charlar con el público.

“Eva no duerme” (2015)

Eva Duarte de Perón, Evita, mito en vida y, más aun, en la muerte. Esta película narra la travesía de su cuerpo errante por Europa, tras morir en 1952 víctima del cáncer, hasta su regreso al país 25 años más tarde. Una de las historias más controversiales y misteriosas de la historia contemporánea argentina. Protagoniza Gael García Bernal.

“Mi amiga del parque” (2016)

Huir de un bar sin pagar la cuenta es la primera aventura para Rosa, supuesta madre de la infante Clarisa, y Liz, madre del recién nacido Nicanor. Esta amistad naciente entre ambas mujeres, que empezó con la promesa de una liberación, pronto se convierte en un relación peligrosa. La cruda y larga guerra civil que azotó Centroamérica en los años 70 y 80, dejó miles de muertos y cadáveres sin identificar. Este conmovedor documental gravita por esos restos sin nombre, y es la lucha de un grupo de madres que buscan y luchan por la justicia y la verdad. Tras la proyección de la película, Zamora hablará con el público, 10 de abril, 3:00pm.

Basada en hechos de la vida real sobre el poderoso cura católico Fernando Karadima, quien cometió abuso infantil y pedofilia entre 1980 y 2000. La película muestra la lucha de sus víctimas par revelar la verdad y buscar justicia.

Son básicamente 60 dias de una fiesta cinematográfica que va desde lo último del cine francés en Rendez-Vous, el esperado showcase anual de cine latinoamericano en el Havana Film Fest, la nueva edición del New Films, New Directors y lo mejor del cine mundial que se da cita en el Tribeca Film Festival. Quince años no es poca cosa para un festival de cine, particularmente en NYC donde las posibilidades son inmensas al igual que los retos. Afortunadamente, el Havana Film Festival New York ha sorteado mucho y ha salido airoso. Para celebrar este hito, la edición 2014 del festival nos trae 45 películas latinoamericanas, incluyendo 24 cintas cubanas que recorren unos 55 años de la producción cinematográfica de la Isla.
Este año tenemos a 16 películas compitiendo por el Havana Star Prize en las categorías de Mejor Película, Mejor Director, Mejor Guión y Mejor Documental. Como premio a la Mejor Película, la ganadora recibirá un estreno comercial de una semana en el Quad Cinema. Sweet!

A Menos Que Sea Necesario (Viviana Cordero, Ecuador), Tercera Llamada (Francisco Franco, México) y La Jaula de Oro (Diego Quemada Díez, México-Guatemala).
- DOCUMENTALES:
La Gorgona, Historias Fugadas (Camilo Botero, Colombia), Hay Un Grupo Que Dice (Lourdes Prieto, Cuba), De Cometas y Fronteras (Yolanda Pividal, México - U.S.), Angels and Dust (Héctor Herrera, Panamá), Seré Asesinado (Justin Webster, Reino Unido-Guatemala) y Sobre Las Olas: A Story of Flamenco in the U.S. (Carolina Loyola, U.S).
Además, se presentará el ciclo especial 'Nuevo Cine Cubano: 55 años de sueños compartidos' con 14 películas que recorren esta trayectoria histórica del cine cubano; y un homenaje al recién desaparecido realizador Daniel Diáz Torres con dos de sus películas: La Película de Ana y Hacerse el Sueco.
El festival se realiza en varias salas de NYC, sobre todo el Quad Cinema, así como también el Moving Image Museum, el Museo del Bronx, el Centro Rey Juan Carlos de la NYU y el Teatro SVA de Chelsea.

Este mes no tenemos nuevas producciones o estrenos
latinos en la gran pantalla, aunque esperamos que algunas de las
películas que han participado en los recientes Havana Film Festival New
York y el Tribeca Film Festival lleguen pronto a una sala de cine local (

Mayo nos trae varias series de cine latinoamericano y
mundial que valen la pena resaltar; Tropical Tuesdays comienza en Casa Mezcal los martes de Mayo y todos estamos esperando la Retrospectiva de Ridley Scott en la Film Society del Lincoln Center. Recomendamos:

For over 20 years, a subculture has emerged in Brazil under society's radar. It is the culture surrounding 'funk carioca', a musical rhythm which mixes the American electronic funk of the 1980s with the most diverse influences of Brazilian music. 'Baile funk' is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world, emerging from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Directors Wesley Pentz (Diplo), teamed up with Leandro HBL in 2005 to tell the story of the MC’s, DJ’s, dancers and cultural producers who have spent their lives in the favela and are creating this vibrant scene. Together, they visited 60 favelas and conducted more than 100 interviews in order to explore the culture that surrounds Funk Carioca. The subject of his work, described as “an extended essay on the meaning of meaninglessness,” is often the extraordinary qualities of ordinary things around us. HFFNY features more than 50 highly anticipated and influential films from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the U.S. including Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela and the U.S. They span a variety of genres and themes, ranging from comedy, thrillers, action, drama and documentaries to children's tales, as well as films from and about indigenous peoples from Guatemala, Colombia and Bolivia.
Opening Night Film: The Festival opens April 12th at
the Directors Guild Theatre with the N.Y. Premiere of Habanastation,
the latest film by Cuban director Ian Padrón. The film presents the
story of two young boys who become friends despite their differences; a
film that speaks of a Havana that reveals two distinct faces from the
everyday life of these youngsters.
Closing Night Film: HFFNY closes on April 20th
at 7 pm at the New York Directors Guild Theatre with the highly
anticipated N.Y. premiere of Juan of the Dead, Alejandro Brugues' second
feature film. In this first "zombie movie" made in Cuba, a series of
strange events start to develop: more and more people become violent,
attacking each other. At first, Juan believes that it's just another
stage of the Cuban revolution but then he realizes that the culprits are
not human and killing them would be very difficult.

beloved consort and daughter of the Aztec emperor Montezuma, this
underground classic unfolds as a narrative exploration into the imagined

of a cataclysmic event — and finds himself with a rapidly expanding game
plan. Once again, the filmmaker invests his characters with metaphoric
undertones, suffusing Santiago with a surreal visual texture that evokes
the nightmarish landscape it was rapidly becoming.

- The 100 Cuban 'Sones': Cubans have
selected a list of the 100 most relevant and authentic Cuban sones in
order to merge them into the same album that contains the roots of this
genre. This small expedition travels to far places of the island in
search of the son’s essence, exalting the main characters behind the
rhythm. This is a documentary full of humor and authentic Cuban music.
Director, Edesio Alejandro, will be present for a Q&A.

PERUFEST presents the most recent cinematographic productions from Peru, screening short and feature films from the new generation of Peruvian directors. Many of these young filmmakers have been awarded prizes in festivals such as: Cannes, Berlin, San Sebastián, Biarritz, La Habana, amongst others.
In its current edition, the main theme of PERUFEST will be the politics of memory that relate to the internal armed conflict in Peru (1980-2000).

HFFNY también rinde homenaje a uno de los maestros de la fotografía en el cine latinoamericano: Raúl Pérez Ureta. Colaborador de directores como Fernando Pérez (Madagascar, La vida es silbar, Suite Habana), Daniel Díaz Torres (Otra mujer, Alicia en el pueblo de Maravillas, Hacerse el sueco), Gerardo Chijona (Boleto al paraíso, Perfecto amor equivocado), Pérez Ureta es el jefe del Departamento de Fotografía de la Escuela Internacional
de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños de Cuba. Pérez
Ureta presentará dos películas ganadoras de premios a la mejor
fotografía: Martí. El ojo del canario (The Eye of Canary), estreno en Nueva York, y Madrigal. Ambas cintas son dirigidas por Fernando Pérez.

- Presentación especial de El estudiante (Santiago
Mitre/Argentina), ganadora en importantes festivales de cine a nivel
internacional y que participó en el Festival de Cine de Nueva York 2011.
El estudiante cuenta
la historia de Roque, quien llega a Buenos Aires para asistir a la
universidad, pero termina encontrando su verdadera vocación: ser
militante político y líder estudiantil; su principal actriz, Valeria
Correa estará presente para la sección de preguntas y respuestas.
- The Zero Hour de Diego Velasco. (Venezuela)
La Hora Cero narra la historia de La Parca (Zapata 666), un temible sicario que se ve obligado a secuestrar una clínica privada para salvar al amor de su vida, Ladydi (Amanda Key). No tardan en llegar los policías y con ellos un circo mediático, quienes convierten a nuestro personaje en un héroe nacional. La Parca descubre que salvarle la vida a Ladydi será difícil, pero escapar con sus secuaces será una tarea casi imposible.
El tiempo empieza a acabarse, y lo que parecía un plan perfecto terminará en un frenético desenlace donde la Parca se verá obligado a enfrentar los errores del pasado, y a descubrir que sus peores enemigos están más cerca de lo que él imagina.

- Cuatro documentales cortos: Simplemente Korda, del director cubano Roberto Chile. El
artista cubano Alberto Korda, conocido a nivel mundial principalmente
por su icónica fotografía del Che Guevara, comparte su fascinación por
la belleza femenina y los primeros años de la Revolución Cubana. También del director Roberto Chile se presentará Yo soy Tata Nganga, basado en la vida de Enrique Hernández Armenteros, más conocido como “Enrique de La Hata”.
- La maestra,
de Catherine Murphy. Basado en la reforma educativa que en un año cambió los niveles de
alfabetización de Cuba. La mayoría de los voluntarios eran
mujeres. Esta película cuenta sus historias.
- Lunes 16 de abril, 6:00pm: Omar de la Cruz, director del Dominican Global Film Festival, presenta una serie de cortos dominicanos que fueron presentados en su edición 2011.
A las 7:30pm, el panel From-Script-To-Screen (“del guión a la pantalla”), presenta a cuatro guionistas profesionales y diferentes entre sí: Pablo Solarz, Ana Katz, Jairo Carrillo y Marco Dutra. Moderado por Ángel Lara, entre otros temas el panel abordará: género vs. cine de autor; la audiencia (el espectador) y
los elementos involucrados en el proceso creativo y la importancia de
la relación “triangular” productor-director-escritor. Luego del panel,
HFFNY ofrecerá un cóctel para celebrar la creación de la Fundación para las Narrativas Audiovisuales en Español (FUNAVE) de Nueva York.
- Miércoles 18 de abril es la noche de los documentales. A las 6:00pm se estrenará Los 100 sones cubanos, dirigido por Edesio Alejandro (Cuba) y que fuera nominado al Grammy. El director estará presente para un diálogo con el público. A las 7:40pm, es el turno de Ser un ser humano,
una serie de películas producidas por la Escuela Internacional de Cine y
Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV) de Cuba, en colaboración con estudiantes de siete escuelas internacionales. Habrá una sesión de preguntas con Rafael Rosal, director de la EICTV.
- Jueves 19 de abril, a las 7:00pm: como parte de la serie de películas con temática indígena, el HFFNY presentará un abanico de cortometrajes seleccionados por Totonacapán en corto, el festival organizado por el Centro de las Artes Indígenas de Veracruz, México. También habrá una muestra de Cine Maya,
hecho por estudiantes mayas de la Escuela de Cine Casa Comal de
Guatemala. Tras las proyecciones de los documentales se abrirá el panel “Historia y Memoria Social: una auto-reflexión del cinema latinoamericano”. El panel de realizadores, moderado por Javier Rioyo, director del Instituto Cervantes,
entre otros temas abordará: las comunidades indígenas y la ideología
política; las voces subalternas y los tratados hegemónicos; visibilidad y
representación de estas comunidades en la prensa; reconciliación de los
crímenes de guerra y restauración a través de las perspectivas de
género, religión y etnia.

banda de 72 años es una de las joyas del legado musical de Cuba. En
este documental los integrantes de la orquesta comparten sus anécdotas e
historias de éxito durante dos conciertos en 2011 a
través de un viaje musical por Havana, Cienfuegos y Nueva York.

Diecinueve películas competirán por el honor de ganar el tercer Havana Star Prize. Las categorías son: Mejor Película, Mejor Director y Mejor Guión. También en contienda está el segundo Havana Star Prize al Mejor Documental, a entregarse el 20 de abril durante la Noche de Cierre del festival.

HFFNY features
more than 50 highly anticipated and influential films from and about
Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the U.S. including Cuba,
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador,
Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela and the U.S. They span a
variety of genres and themes, ranging from comedy, thrillers, action,
drama and documentaries to children's tales, as well as films from and

Opening Night Film: The Festival opens April 12th at
the Directors Guild Theatre with the N.Y. Premiere of Habanastation,
the latest film by Cuban director Ian Padrón. The film presents the
story of two young boys who become friends despite their differences; a
film that speaks of a Havana that reveals two distinct faces from the
everyday life of these youngsters.
Closing Night Film: HFFNY closes on April 20th
at 7 pm at the New York Directors Guild Theatre with the highly
anticipated N.Y. premiere of Juan of the Dead, Alejandro Brugues' second
feature film. In this first "zombie movie" made in Cuba, a series of
strange events start to develop: more and more people become violent,
attacking each other. At first, Juan believes that it's just another
stage of the Cuban revolution but then he realizes that the culprits are
not human and killing them would be very difficult.
