Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Thursday, May 17, 2012 , under , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

Recomendamos:

* Lovely Molly > De Eduardo Sánchez > En cartelera Mayo 18 >  MOLLY.

When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. She soon begins an inexorable descent into evil that blurs the lines between psychosis and possession.

* Tropical Tuesdays > The South Trembles > May >  Obra Negra/Casa Mezcal > Tropical.

May 15 > En el futuro (In the Future). Directed by Mauro Andrizzi, Argentina, 2010, 60 min.

* WERNER HERZOG > May 18 > Whitney Museum >  Biennial > HERZOG.

Inimitable filmmaker Werner Herzog, characterized as the “romantic visionary” of New German Cinema, is best known for his unorthodox approach to capturing authenticity in his films—close encounters with danger and submitting cast members to unusual training, among others—as well as his mixture of fact and fiction, in narrative and documentary films alike. The subject of his work, described as “an extended essay on the meaning of meaninglessness,” is often the extraordinary qualities of ordinary things around us. For this program, Herzog discusses his particular contributions to the Biennial and his thoughts on contemporary art with co-curators Elisabeth Sussman and Jay Sanders.

* HYSTERIA > En Cartelera Mayo 18 > HYSTERIA.

Hysteria is a romantic comedy with an accomplished cast led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Felicity Jones and Rupert Everett, that tells an untold tale of discovery - the surprising story of the birth of the electro-mechanical vibrator at the very peak of Victorian prudishness.

* HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL OF BARCELONA > Mayo 18-22 > Poet's Den Theater >HUMAN RIGHTS

* Ridley Scott Retrospective >  May 25 - June 3 > Film Society of Lincoln Center > RIDLEY.

The retrospective will include the Director’s cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, a new 35mm print of THELMA & LOUISE and the chance for fans to catch all of their favorites on the big screen.

“With ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER, Ridley Scott has been responsible for two of the most lasting and visionary works of science-fiction cinema,” said Film Society Associate Director of Programming Scott Foundas. “But as a filmmaker, he has seemed just as compelled by stories set in the distant past and those set in the combat zones of the present, always finding the human dimension in the mythic and the mythic dimension in the seemingly everyday. As he makes his long-awaited return to sci-fi with this summer’s highly anticipated PROMETHEUS, we’re delighted to pay tribute to Scott and his extraordinary career.”

* FAMILY FILMS > May-July > Matinee series > Film Society of Lincoln Center > Special discount ticket price: $6 for everyone > FAMILY.

NY ESSENTIALS: CINEMA IN MAY

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 , under , , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

* The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez, 1968 > Directed by John Chamberlain > Courtesy Ultra Violet > May 11 > Guggenheim.

A visually inventive experimentation in film, The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez offers a rare opportunity to consider the celluloid manifestation of Chamberlain's assemblage aesthetic. Starring Taylor Mead in the role of the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez and Ultra Violet as his beloved consort and daughter of the Aztec emperor Montezuma, this underground classic unfolds as a narrative exploration into the imagined private life of its titular character.
Please be advised that this film contains nudity.

* Tropical Tuesdays > The South Trembles > May >  Obra Negra/Casa Mezcal > Tropical.

May 8 > Yatasto. Directed by Hermes Paralluelo, Argentina, 2011, 99 min.
May 15 > En el futuro (In the Future). Directed by Mauro Andrizzi, Argentina, 2010, 60 min.
Preceded by Copia imperfecta (Imperfect Copy). Directed by José Luis Torres Leiva, Chile, 2012, 2 min. A short film tribute to the late Raul Ruiz, commissioned by the Rotterdam Film Festival.

May 22 > Süden. Directed by Gastón Solnicki, 60 min. Argentina, 2009.
May 29 > Los Electrodomésticos: El frío misterio (The Electrodomésticos: The Cold Mystery). Directed by Sergio Castro, Chile, 2010, 110 min.
Preceded by El punk triste (The Sad Punk). Directed by Mario Navarro, Chile, 2010, 22 min.) A man that was a member of the underground scene in Santiago in the 80s visits five parts of the city where, according to him, the Punk movement was born.

* Favela on Blast > Mayo 10 > 92Y Tribeca > FAVELA.

For over 20 years, a subculture has emerged in Brazil under society's radar. It is the culture surrounding 'funk carioca', a musical rhythm which mixes the American electronic funk of the 1980s with the most diverse influences of Brazilian music. 'Baile funk' is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world, emerging from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Directors Wesley Pentz (Diplo), teamed up with Leandro HBL in 2005 to tell the story of the MC’s, DJ’s, dancers and cultural producers who have spent their lives in the favela and are creating this vibrant scene. Together, they visited 60 favelas and conducted more than 100 interviews in order to explore the culture that surrounds Funk Carioca. In doing so, they have created a portrait of a subculture that defines the youth of Rio’s dismissed population. Directors: Leandro HBL & Wesley Pentz. 84 min. 2008. In Portuguese with English subtitles. DigiBeta.

* Lovely Molly > De Eduardo Sánchez > Sneak preview > Mayo 11 > Film Society of Lincoln Center > MOLLY.

* The Space Between: A Panorama of Cinema in Turkey > Ends May 11 > Film Society of Lincoln Center > TURKEY.

From the powerful, socially engaged cinema of 1960s filmmakers like Yılmaz Güney (a special focus of this series) to the strong current of personal auteurs (like Fatih Akın and Nuri Bilge Ceylan), Turkish cinema has always stood between traditions: richly informed about currents in European and American filmmaking while imbibing influences from Egyptian, Indian and--more recently--Iranian cinema, creating a fascinating mixture of styles and approaches.

* WERNER HERZOG > May 18 > Whitney Museum >  Biennial > HERZOG.

* The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez, 1968 > Directed by John Chamberlain > Courtesy Ultra Violet > April 20, 27, and May 11 > Guggenheim.

* POST MORTEM > DIRECTED BY PABLO LARRAÍN > April 11-24 > Film Forum > POST.

A provocative, morbidly comic drama that begins during the onset of the bloody 1973 Chilean coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende. Alfredo Castro (who played the title character in TONY MANERO, Larraín’s previous critically acclaimed film) is a coroner’s assistant who, while obsessively wooing an erotic dancer, is caught in the midst of a cataclysmic event — and finds himself with a rapidly expanding game plan. Once again, the filmmaker invests his characters with metaphoric undertones, suffusing Santiago with a surreal visual texture that evokes the nightmarish landscape it was rapidly becoming.

*Documentaries from Havana > Abril 18 > Instituto Cervantes > two documentaries:
- The 100 Cuban 'Sones': Cubans have selected a list of the 100 most relevant and authentic Cuban sones in order to merge them into the same album that contains the roots of this genre. This small expedition travels to far places of the island in search of the son’s essence, exalting the main characters behind the rhythm. This is a documentary full of humor and authentic Cuban music. Director, Edesio Alejandro, will be present for a Q&A.
- To Be A Human Being - Love: One episode of the six full-length documentaries that are part of To be a Human Being, a series made in eight diverse communities around the world by young filmmakers from film schools in seven different countries. It is a celebration of humanity, based on a simple premise that emerged from a conversation with a woman subsistence farmer in Kenya in 1986 - what we have in common is very big, and what is different between us is very interesting.  The six universal human characteristics identified by the Kenyan farmer form the themes for the six Chapters of the series - Perseverance, Love, Culture, Faith, Fear and Hope. The series was produced and coordinated by the International Film and TV School (EICTV) in San  Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, with other participating film schools from India, New Zealand, Portugal, Jordan, Spain and New York. The director of the institution, Rafael Rosal, will introduce.

The economy has kept Roberto (José Mota) out of work for a long time. When a freak accident puts him at the center of a media frenzy, the enterprising ad exec hires a snaky agent to help him cash in on his life-or-death situation. In Portuguese with subtitles.

* SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN. Directed by Malik Bendjelloul.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN.  Rodriguez. Credit: Hal Wilson, Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics
In the late ‘60s, a musician was discovered in a Detroit bar by two celebrated Motown producers who were struck by his soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. They recorded an album that they believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. In fact, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity amid rumors of a gruesome on-stage suicide. But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon (as big as The Beatles). Two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez. This is a film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.

Babygirl, directed and written by Macdara Vallely. (Ireland, USA) – World Premiere, Narrative. For as long as she can remember, Bronx teenager Lena has watched her mom Lucy squander her life on a series of deadbeat men. When Victor, her mom’s latest boy toy, starts hitting on Lena, she sets up a trap to expose Victor for the creep he is… but the plan backfires. Macdara Vallely crafts a heartfelt drama about the emotional highs and lows in the moment between childhood and adulthood.

* Ballroom Dancer, directed and written by Christian Bonke and Andreas Koefoed. (Denmark) – North American Premiere. In 2000, Slavik Kryklyvyy became the World Latin American Dance Champion. Enduring success seemed assured, but instead Slavik’s career sputtered... until redemption seemed possible with his new partner and lover, Anna. But will Slavik’s unwavering ambition prove toxic to their romance? Subtly depicting the pair’s shifting relationship through gestures, glances, and the dance itself, Ballroom Dancer begins as a comeback story and evolves into a movingly intimate tragic romance. In Russian, English with subtitles.

Burn, directed by Tom Putnam and Brenna Sanchez. (USA) – World Premiere, Documentary.
Detroit is burning. Meet the men and women charged with saving the once-roaring American city that many have written off as dead. With vast stretches of forsaken buildings left as kindling, they face one of the worst arson rates in the world. From executive producer Denis Leary, Burn drives us straight into the heart-pounding fire and introduces us to the characters and controversies that make up the most overworked and underequipped firehouse in the country.

Returning to the role that won him TFF’s Best Actor award in Eytan Fox’s Yossi & Jagger in 2003, Ohad Knoller is extraordinary as Yossi, a closeted gay man living a solitary existence in Tel Aviv. A chance encounter with a group of soldiers ignites Yossi’s desire to live an open, fulfilling life. * 2 Days in New York, directed and written by Julie Delpy. (France) – New York Premiere, Narrative. This deliriously witty follow-up to 2 Days in Paris finds Marion (writer/director Julie Delpy) living a comfortable life in New York with her latest hipster boyfriend, Mingus (Chris Rock, brilliantly playing it straight), and their two young kids from prior relationships. A riotous comedy of cultural errors ensues when Marion’s totally unhinged, gleefully unfiltered family arrives from Paris to meet Mingus for the first time. In English, French with subtitles. A Magnolia Pictures release.

* Any Day Now, directed by Travis Fine, written by Travis Fine and George Arthur Bloom. (USA) – World Premiere, Narrative. In the late 1970s, when a mentally handicapped teenager is abandoned, a gay couple takes him in and becomes the family he’s never had. But once the unconventional living arrangement is discovered by authorities, the men must fight a biased legal system to adopt the child they have come to love as their own. Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt star in TFF alum Travis Fine’s (The Space Between) touching and occasionally incendiary drama.

* BAM150, directed by Michael Sládek (USA) - World Premiere, Documentary. Go behind the scenes like never before at BAM, the nation's oldest performing arts center. Featuring footage of recent BAM performances, interviews with groundbreaking artists like Laurie Anderson and Robert Wilson, and the fascinating history of the creative home to such greats as Pina Bausch, Peter Brook, and Merce Cunningham, TFF alum Michael Sládek's (Con Artist) doc shows that BAM's 150 years were not always easy, but are a testament to the power and stamina of the institution that launched Brooklyn as a cultural mecca.

* A Better Life (Une Vie Meilleure), directed by Ceìdric Kahn, written by Ceìdric Kahn and Catherine Pailleì. (France, Canada) – U.S. Premiere, Narrative. Passionately in love from the moment they meet, idealistic chef Yann and single mother Nadia share big dreams for their future. Life gets complicated when they impulsively buy a secluded restaurant in the woods and take on risky loans, testing the strength of their relationship. Fiercely gritty in its romanticism, this is a story of the lengths one will go for the chance at a better life. In French, English with subtitles.

* Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, directed by Ramona Diaz. (USA) – World Premiere, Documentary.
It sounds like a dream: A charismatic Filipino singer from the slums of Manila posts videos of his cover band to YouTube, and soon he’s fronting an iconic rock band. Sounds crazy, but it’s the real-life rock-and-roll fairy tale that Arnel Pineda is living as the new lead singer of Journey. The pressure’s on Pineda as this rockin’ doc follows Journey’s dizzying world tour—can a man who has already overcome so many obstacles deal with the demands of his newfound fame? In English, Tagalog with subtitles.

* Headshot (Fon Tok Kuen Fah), directed and written by Pen-ek Ratanaruang. (Thailand, France) – U.S. Premiere, Narrative. A return to the crime genre for celebrated Thai auteur Pen-ek Ratanaruang (6ixtynin9, Last Life in the Universe), Headshot is a noir-laced thriller centered on Tul, a hit man who is shot in the head and wakes up to find that he sees everything upside down. Working backwards (and often upside down) to tell a brooding and convoluted tale of underworld double dealings, this is an unexpected and artful take on the action thriller from a genre master. In Thai with subtitles. A Kino Lorber release.

Los detalles:

* The 13th Havana Film Festival New York > April 12 - 20 >
with special events April 20th at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and April 20-22 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens > HNYFF.

HFFNY features more than 50 highly anticipated and influential films from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the U.S. including Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela and the U.S. They span a variety of genres and themes, ranging from comedy, thrillers, action, drama and documentaries to children's tales, as well as films from and about indigenous peoples from Guatemala, Colombia and Bolivia.
Opening Night Film: The Festival opens April 12th at the Directors Guild Theatre with the N.Y. Premiere of Habanastation, the latest film by Cuban director Ian Padrón. The film presents the story of two young boys who become friends despite their differences; a film that speaks of a Havana that reveals two distinct faces from the everyday life of these youngsters.
Closing Night Film: HFFNY closes on April 20th at 7 pm at the New York Directors Guild Theatre with the highly anticipated N.Y. premiere of Juan of the Dead, Alejandro Brugues' second feature film. In this first "zombie movie" made in Cuba, a series of strange events start to develop: more and more people become violent, attacking each other. At first, Juan believes that it's just another stage of the Cuban revolution but then he realizes that the culprits are not human and killing them would be very difficult.

Paraisos Artificiales > Directed by Yulene Olaizola, México > Hasta Abril 5 > reRun Theatrer > Brooklyn > Paraisos.

Artifical Paradises is a "poetic contemplation that balances a landscape's serene beauty with the small futile dramas of characters whose lives are ruled by intoxication" (Screen International). Acclaimed at Rotterdam and winner of the Best Cinematography Award at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, Mexican filmmaker Yulene Olaizola's elegant drama is a journey into the altered states and unlikely friendship of young heroin addict Luisa (Luisa Pardo) and pot-smoking, aging caretaker Salomon (Salomón Hernández). Gloriously photographed, the film is an evocation of this odd couple's emotions, their attempts to escape from everyday life and reach an artificial Eden, as well as the storms brought on by their enjoyment of this experience in a crumbling Veracruz beach resort.

* The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez, 1968 > Directed by John Chamberlain > Courtesy Ultra Violet > April 6, 20, 27, and May 11 > Guggenheim.

* SPANISH CINEMA OF THE EARLY POST-FRANCO ERA (1975-83) > April 6 – April 13> > ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES > AFA.

Anthology, in collaboration with film scholar Gerard Dapena and the Cultural Department of the Consulate General of Spain, is thrilled to present this film series surveying the era in Spanish cinema directly following the death, after almost four decades of dictatorial rule, of Francisco Franco. The period that followed was one of cultural awakening across many different art forms, and this was certainly true of Spanish cinema – the eight years covered by this program saw a burst of creativity and experimentation, resulting in films like Iván Zulueta’s sex-and-drugs-filled underground classic ARREBATO (RAPTURE); Ventura Pons’s extraordinary OCAÑA: RETRATO INTERMITENTE, a portrait of a homosexual painter; Jaime Chavarri’s DISENCHANTMENT, a documentary profiling the widow and children of the official poet of Franco’s regime; and Pedro Almodóvar’s flamboyant, unapologetically tasteless early films (represented here by PEPI, LUCI, BOM and LABYRINTH OF PASSION); among many other unforgettable works that took full advantage of Spain’s newfound creative freedom.
Paying homage to this extraordinary era in Spanish cinema, this series features ten films, most of them rarely screened in the U.S. since their initial release, and all of them shown from archival prints.

* Todos estamos invitados. Director Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón (con Q&A) > Abril 4 > Instituto Cervantes > Todos.

Josu Jon has been injured in a hard clash with the Civil Guard and he has lost his memory. He is treated in a prison hospital while he is waiting to see what the judge and the competent authority decide. He is not very sure who he is, so the nuns teach him to pray and be a good Christian. However, other inmates from the same organization as him, help him to remember that he is, in fact, a brave “gudari”, and that he will soon be returning to the struggle as soon as he gets out of prison. In the meantime, events follow their course in the Basque Country: a university professor, Xabier, is threatened for his opinions of the situation in Euskadi (the Basque Country). At the same time, his girlfriend works as a psychologist in the same psychiatric center where they are supervising Josu Jon’s progress.

Parte de la serie 100 Reflections Out of Sorrow.

* ANTONIONI DOCUMENTARIES: RARE SCREENINGS OF MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI’S FOUR-HOUR FILM ON CHINA AND EARLY SHORTS > Abril 7 y 8 > Museum of the Moving Image > ANTONIONI.

Michelangelo Antonioni (1912–2007), the great Italian director of L’Avventura, Red Desert, and Blow-Up, began his career making documentaries. Rarely seen outside Italy, these films offer a deeper understanding of the aesthetic he would develop in later years. On the occasion of the centenary of Antonioni’s birth, Museum of the Moving Image will offer a rare opportunity to see Antonioni’s documentaries, including a selection of short works and screenings of Chung Kuo China. This legendary but seldom-shown four-hour documentary was made at the invitation of Mao Zedong but then banned by the Chinese government for years.

* TEMPO REI > Abril 12 > 92 Y Tribeca > CT's Music+Film Series: Janeiro in New York > REI.

* DETACHMENT. Directed by Tony Kaye (AMERICAN HISTORY X) >> Out March 16 in NYC > March 23 Los Angeles.

The long-awaited film DETACHMENT stars Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who conveniently avoids any emotional connections by never staying anywhere long enough to form a bond with either his students or colleagues. A lost soul grappling with a troubled past, Henry finds himself at a public school where an apathetic student body has created a frustrated, burned-out administration. Inadvertently becoming a role model to his students, while also bonding with a runaway teen who is just as lost as he is, Henry finds that he’s not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.
Kaye has molded a contemporary vision of people who become increasingly distant from others while still feeling the need to connect. DETACHMENT features a stellar ensemble cast, including Academy Award® winner Marcia Gay Harden, Christina Hendricks, William Petersen, Bryan Cranston, Tim Blake Nelson, Lucy Liu, Blythe Danner, James Caan, and newcomers Sami Gayle and Betty Kaye.
