OUTSTANDING LATINO CINEMA AT THE TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL: HIGHLIGHTS

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Friday, April 17, 2015 , under , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

These are the selected movies by Latinos or about Latinos participating in the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. The selection includes features, documentaries and shorts from the Americas and Europe. The Festival closes on April 26 so, do not miss the chance to enjoy at least one of these movies. And let us know, send us a tweet!. Some of these movies will make it to a movie theater near you or On Demand! :) Enjoy the best Latino Cinema at Tribeca!

ALOFT,
de Claudia Llosa.

In parallel narratives, single-mother Nana (Jennifer Connelly) has a mysterious experience at the hands of a traveling healer, years later her troubled son Ivan (Cillian Murphy) sets out in search of his now absent mother. Academy Award®–nominee Claudia Llosa’s (The Milk of Sorrow) decade-spanning family drama is a dreamlike rumination on faith, forgiveness, and family, set against an otherworldly frozen landscape. A Sony Pictures Classics Release.

VIAJE, de Paz Fábrega.

After meeting at a party, Luciana and Pedro spark up a spontaneous rendezvous when Luciana accompanies Pedro to a national forest on a work trip. Eschewing the fraudulent nature of traditional relationships, the pair explores the beauty in the nature that surrounds them as they indulge in the passions of their encounter and navigate the various meanings of commitment.

BARE,
de Natalia Leite.

Sarah’s (Dianna Agron) mundane life in a Nevada desert town is turned upside down with the arrival of Pepper (Paz de la Huerta), a mysterious female drifter, who leads her into a life of seedy strip clubs and illicit drugs. Their passion inspires Sarah to break free of her past and seek out a new life of her own.

EL CINCO,
 de Adrián Biniez.

Patón, with his fiery temper and aggressive play, is the veteran star of his city’s soccer team. When his transgressions land him a lengthy suspension, he considers retirement, while discovering a world that consists of more than just feet and fists. This coming-of-middle-age tale reveals the predicament of leaving the arena where you most feel at home.

LUCIFER,
de Gust van den Berghe.

After being banished from heaven, an angel begins his descent to hell, only to unexpectedly land in a Mexican village where his newfound presence affects the villagers in strange and surprising ways. Inspired by the notorious biblical story, Lucifer is a mesmerizing, moving, and imaginative re-envisioning of the notorious biblical story, presented in director Gust van den Berghe’s own innovative aspect ratio, Tondoscope.
CHERZO DIABOLICO, de Adrian Garcia Bogliano.

Armed with a fine-tuned chokehold and penchant for piano sonatas, a wearied accountant breaks his mild-mannered routine when he kidnaps a young woman. What starts as a carefully calculated plan soon crescendos into his worst nightmare. A delightfully twisted black comedy, Scherzo Diabolico is the latest opus from director Adrián García Bogliano.

WONDROUS BOCCACIO,
de Paolo and Vittorio Taviani.

Set against the backdrop of a black plague-stricken Florence, ten young men and women escape to a country estate where they spend their days telling different stories of love, fate, and resurrection. From legendary Italian directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, Wondrous Boccaccio is a tribute to the stories that emerged from one of the darkest periods in Italian history, and the imaginations that quietly fueled them.

CARTEL LAND,
de Matthew Heinemen.

A portrait of two men, both leaders of small paramilitary groups that police different sides of the Mexican drug war: one in the southern US and the other in Michoacan, deep inside Mexico. With unprecedented access, this film brings forward deep questions about the breakdown of order and entanglement of modern-day vigilante movements at a time when the government cannot provide basic security for its people. In Spanish and English with subtitles. A release by The Orchard.

GORED,
de Ido Mizrahy.

Gored centers on Spanish bullfighter Antonio Barrera, holder of the dubious title of “Most Gored Bullfighter in History,” as he grapples with the end of his career. Captivating footage of past and present bullfights reveal Barrera’s tremendous passion for the sport, as well as his seemingly irresistible urge to confront death at every opportunity.

HAVANA MOTOR CLUB, de Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt.

Reforms have offered opportunity in Cuba but the children of the Revolution are unsure of the best route forward. For a half-dozen drag racers, this means last-minute changes to their beloved American muscle cars, as they prepare for the first sanctioned race in Cuba since 1960. Punctuated by a lively Cuban soundtrack, Havana Motor Club offers a fascinating glimpse at the resilience and ingenuity of the competitive spirit.

PALIO,
de Cosima Spender.

Taking bribes and making deals is as essential as being a good rider in the Palio, the world’s oldest horse race. Giovanni, a young jockey, is up to the challenge when he faces his former mentor on the track. What ensues is a thrilling battle with the intoxicating drama that is at the center of Italian tradition.

THE WOLFPACK,
de Crystal Moselle.

Everything the Angulo brothers know about the outside world they learned from obsessively watching movies. Shut away from bustling New York City by their overprotective father, they cope with their isolation by diligently re-enacting their favorite films. When one of the brothers escapes, the world as they know it will be transformed.

SHORTS:

The Kiss, de Carlos G. Davila
Go Sebastian Go, de Eva Longoria. (short)

FILM: PELICULAS LATINAS EN EL TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL 2014

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Monday, March 24, 2014 , under , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

Directed by Mariana Rondón.
(Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, Germany)

Junior, a nine-year-old living in Caracas, wants nothing more than to straighten his unruly hair to look like a singer for his school photo—a fixation that stirs homophobic panic in his overtaxed mother. Each effort Junior makes to alter his appearance and gain his mother’s love is brushed off with abrasive avoidance until he’s ultimately faced with a heartbreaking decision. With a painfully tender performance by Samuel Lange, writer-director Mariana Rondón directs this coming-of-age drama about the search for identity clashing with intolerance. In Spanish with subtitles.

2- Güeros. Directed by Alonso RuizPalacios. (México)

A water balloon suddenly dropping from the sky exploding on a mother’s head in the frantic first moments of this striking debut feature, announces its director, Alonso Ruiz Palacios, as a bold new voice of Mexican cinema. Set amidst the 1999 student strikes in Mexico City, this coming-of-age tale finds two brothers venturing through the city in a sentimental search for an aging legendary musician. Shot in beautiful black-and-white, Gueros brims with youthful exuberance. In Spanish with subtitles.

3- Mala Mala. Directed by Dan Sickles y Antonio Santini.
(Puerto Rico)

Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles’ vibrant and visually striking immersion in the transgender community of Puerto Rico celebrates the breadth of experiences among trans-identifying women: from campaigning for government-recognized human rights, to working in the sex industry, to performing as part of the drag troupe “The Doll House.” Unapologetic and unconventional, Mala Mala explores the ways internal and external identity pave the path of self discovery through the unique yet universal stories of its fascinating cast of characters. In English and Spanish with subtitles.

4- El documental 'Maravilla' de Juan Pablo Cadaveira.
(Argentina)

A true underdog story, Maravilla follows Argentinian boxer Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martinez, as he sets out to reclaim the title of Middleweight champion that was unfairly snatched from him in 2011 by Julio Chavez, Jr. Focusing on the rise of Martinez from penniless amateur to world champion and sporting celebrity, director Juan Pablo Cadaveira offers a fascinating glimpse into today’s boxing landscape, revealing the politics of the sporting profession that often places entertainment value over the sport itself. In English and Spanish with subtitles.

5- Human Capital (Il capitale umano) de Paolo Virzì, Francesco Bruni and Francesco Piccolo. (Italy, France)

In Paolo Virzì’s refined three-chapter tale, we begin at the end. Approaching a snowy night from three vastly different perspectives, the lives of two generations overlap as they tumble toward an ill-fated event that inextricably links them. Starring two of Italy’s leading actresses, Valeria Golino and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Human Capital twists love, class, and ambition into a singular, true-life story that exposes the consequences of valuing certain human lives over others. In Italian with subtitles.

6- The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq (L'Enlevement de Michel Houellebecq) Directed and written by Guillaume Nicloux.
(France)

If novelist Michel Houellebecq had indeed been kidnapped during his 2011 promotional book tour, this may have been the definitive documentary on the case. As a wild alternative, Guillaume Nicloux presents this work of complete fiction starring none other than Houellebecq himself. Playfully speculating on the explanation for Houellebecq's mysterious disappearance, this highly entertaining, farcical piece of cinema parallels the wry characteristics of its unique and ever-unconventional subject. In French with subtitles.

7- X/Y. Directed and written by Ryan Piers Williams. (USA)

Ryan Piers Williams directs and stars alongside America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn and Melonie Diaz in a character-driven drama centered around four restless New Yorkers, and their shifting sexual and romantic relationships as they search for a sense of intimacy and self-identity. As Mark, Jen, Sylvia, and Jake navigate through their emotionally-arrested states, X/Y reveals the honest and wanton desire we all have to connect with someone and what is at stake when that connection fades.

8- Chef. Directed and written by Jon Favreau. (USA)

After talented and dynamic chef Carl Casper’s (Favreau) social media-fueled meltdown against his nemesis food critic lands him without any job prospects, Chef Casper hits the road with his son and his sous chef (John Leguizamo) to launch a brand new food truck business. Complete with lavish food imagery and a star-studded cast including Sofia Vergara, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Platt, and Amy Sedaris, Favreau’s fresh take on food and chef culture has poignant messages about the media-driven world in which we live and the real meaning of success. An Open Road Release.

9- Love is Strange. Directed and written by Ira Sachs, co-written by Mauricio Zacharias. (USA)

Ira Sachs returns to the indie scene following 2012’s acclaimed Keep the Lights On with another new take on modern love. Acting veterans John Lithgow and Alfred Molina star as Ben and George, a Manhattan couple who are finally given the opportunity to make their union official. But when Ben loses his teaching job as a result, the relationship is tested in unconventional ways—leaving them to lean more heavily than ever on their love to hold things together. A Sony Pictures Classics Release.

10- Manos Sucias. Directed and written by Josef Wladyka, co-written by Alan Blanco. (Colombia, USA)

Towing a submerged torpedo in the wake of their battered fishing boat, a desperate fisherman and a naive kid embark on a journey trafficking millions of dollars worth of cocaine. Shot entirely on location along the Pacific coast of Colombia—in areas that bear the indelible scars of the drug trade—Manos Sucias refuses to glamorize the drug trade but rather seeks to offer a rare glimpse of its devastating effects. Executive Produced by Spike Lee.

De aqui a comienzos de Mayo tendremos las carteleras ocupadas con varios festivales de cine y algunos estrenos relevantes. Veamos:

LO NUEVO EN CARTELERA

* NEW DIRECTORS / NEW FILMS > Marzo 20 al 27 > NDNF.

The Festival New Directors / New Films is dedicated to the discovery of new works by emerging filmmaking talent. For this edition the festival presents 25 features (19 narrative, 6 documentary) and 17 short films representing 24 countries – all having their New York City premieres. And relevant Latino filmmaking, of course!: Matías Peñeiro's Viola; Jazmin Lopez's Leones; Marcelo Lordello's THEY’LL COME BACK; Eryk Rocha's JARDS, plus films from Italy and France and shorts from Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Brazil.

Read our article about the Festival New Directors / New Films > NDNF.

* BLANCANIEVES. Directed by Pablo Berger > En Cartelera Marzo 29 > Varios Teatros.

Set in a romanticized 1920s Seville, Berger's Snow White is Carmen (Macarena García), the daughter of a famous bull fighter, who lives under the tyrannical rule of her monstrous, evil stepmother, Encarna (Maribel Verdú). She escapes and joins a troupe of bullfighting dwarves, where her beauty and natural talent in the ring attract notices from the press. But soon the news reaches Encarna, who at last she knows where to find Carmen, and she prepares for the final showdown.

Watch our interview with director Pablo Berger > TespisTV.

* THE GIRL > Directed by David Riker > En Cartelera > Varios Teatros > Girl.

More than a decade after bursting onto the scene with his acclaimed debut feature The City (La Ciudad)—a quartet of stories about Spanish-speaking immigrants trying to make it in New York—director David Riker travels south of the border for his long-awaited follow-up, The Girl. In a performance of staggering power, Abbie Cornish (Bright Star, SevenPsychopaths) stars as Ashley, a single Austin mother and recovering alcoholic trying to hold her life together after losing custody of her son and her job at a Wal Mart-esque big box store. Desperate for cash, Ashley offers her services as a “coyote” for a Mexican family trying to cross the border illegally. But when the attempted crossing ends in tragedy, Ashley finds herself playing surrogate mother to a lost and confused young girl desperate to find whatever family she has left. The harrowing, moving and ultimately hopeful journey that ensues takes us deep into the heart of Mexico, and of a woman trying to make amends for her troubled past.

* NO. Directed by Pablo Larrain > Nominada al Oscar como Mejor Película Extranjera > Varios Teatros.

In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra (Gael Garcia Bernal), to spearhead their campaign. Against all odds, with scant resources and under scrutiny by the despot’s minions, Saavedra and his team devise an audacious plan to win the election and set Chile free.

Watch director Pablo Larraín speaking about NO > TespisTV.

* SAVING LINCOLN. Directed by Salvador Litvak > Varios Teatros.

Based on true events, SAVING LINCOLN tells the little-known story of our 16th President (whose life, and death, is currently generating a plethora of films, television and book projects), through the eyes of his long-time friend and law partner from 1852 to 1857 colleague, Ward Hill Lamon. Lamon, a Southerner, was a banjo-player, singer, and pistol-packing jokester who appointed himself Lincoln’s bodyguard after the first assassination attempt in 1861, and who foiled repeated attempts on the President's life throughout their four years in Washington. Despite some pronounced differences between the two men, they shared a fondness for telling jokes and stories, and both felt slavery should be eliminated. Lamon often served as Lincoln's private confidant, and kept him functioning during the darkest hours of the Civil War. Lincoln was never far from him – save that fateful night at
Ford’s Theatre when Lamon was sent by the President on a Reconstruction mission to Richmond.
This unique feature film was shot entirely on a single green screen stage and composited into vintage photographs of the Civil War era. As Director Litvak says, “I borrowed techniques from painting, photography, animation, stereoscopy, and VFX compositing to create a style I call CineCollage.

* MARIACHI GRINGO > En Cartelera > Jackson Heights Cinema. (Tom Gustafson, USA/Mexico, 2012, 95 min.)

A stifled small-town man, stuck in a dead end life runs away to Mexico to be a mariachi singer. Mariachi Gringo is a musical tour-de-force exploring the reality of "following your dreams" across cultural, personal, social and geographical borders. Featuring Martha Higareda and Lila Downs.

* EVERYBODY HAS A PLAN > En Cartelera > Angelika Film Center and AMC Empire 25.
(Todos tenemos un plan, Ana Piterbarg, Argentina/Spain, 2012, 117 min. In Spanish with English subtitles).

In this dazzling thriller from first-time filmmaker Ana Piterbarg, Viggo Mortensen (in his third Spanish-language film) stars as twin brothers whose deadly pact plunges them into the sordid depths of the Argentinean underworld. Everybody Has a Plan tells the story of Agustín, a man desperate to abandon his frustrating existence in Buenos Aires. After the death of his two brother Pedro, Agustín decides to adopt the identity of his brother and return to the mysterious region of Argentina where they lived as boys. But shortly after his return, Agustín fins himself unwillingly involved in the dangerous criminal world that was a part of his brother's life.

* BLESS ME, ULTIMA > En Cartelera Marzo 27 > AMC Loews Village 7. (Carl Franklin, USA, 2012, 104 min. In Spanish and English with English subtitles).

Based on the controversial novel by acclaimed author Rudolfo Anaya, Bless Me, Ultima is a turbulent coming-of-age story about Antonio Marez (Luke Ganalon), a young boy growing up in New Mexico during World War II. When a mysterious curandera named Ultima (Miriam Colon) comes to live with his family, she teaches him about the power of the spiritual world. As their relationship grows, Antonio begins to question the strict Catholic doctrine that has been taught by his parents. Through a series of mysterious and at times terrifying events, Antonio must grapple with questions about the relationship between good and evil and ultimately how to reconcile Ultima’s powers with those of the God of his church.

* Epic Encounters: Flaherty NYC at 92Y TRIBECA > Ongoing > Epic.

Some things in life fall away into a forgotten chasm, relegated to imperfect human memories, tucked away in a remote abyss where you will probably never hear from them again.
Film often reverses the course of events, giving these things a place in our history. This program focuses specifically on the ability of film to shed light on those spots that might otherwise be lost forever. The selected films deal with episodes of a nebulous past, with activities that are not usually represented, with fractured spaces and finally, with the frailty of memory. Filmmakers, videographers, professionals and amateurs from Latin America, Spain and the US help create a bridge between what is seemingly irrelevant and what takes on significance. This show features a Hi-8 home video, an underground scream, a fading memory, an unknown story, a rehearsal and a rarely seen film.

* VIOLETA WENT TO HEAVEN > En Cartelera Marzo 29 > The Quad Cinema. (Violeta se fue a los cielos, Andrés Wood, Chile, 2011, 110 min., In Spanish with English subtitles)

The extraordinary story of the iconic poet, musician and folksinger Violeta Parra, whose songs have become hymns for Chileans and Latin Americans alike. Director Andrés wood (Machuca) traces the intensity and explosive vitality of her life, from humble origins to international fame, her defense of indigenous cultures and her devotion to art.

* The Place Beyond the Pines > con Eva Mendes > En Cartelera Marzo 29 > Varios Teatros.

A motorcycle stunt rider turns to robbing banks as a way to provide for his lover and their newborn child, a decision that puts him on a collision course with an ambitious rookie cop navigating a department ruled by a corrupt detective.

* WAR WITCH. Directed by Kim Nguyen > Varios Teatros.

WAR WITCH tells the story of Komona, a young girl whose life is anything but normal. Kidnapped by African rebels at the age of 12, Komona was forced at gunpoint to slaughter her own parents and fight as a child soldier against the government in the jungles. Carlos Diegues was a pioneer of the revolutionary Cinema Novo movement, which made film an integral part of the cultural and sociopolitical struggles facing Brazil in the 1960s. Diegues’ now-iconic films had a historical emphasis but were conceptually groundbreaking and were among the first to bring Afro-Brazilian culture to life on film. We are proud to present this comprehensive survey of his work. Carlos Diegues in person!

* Gypsy Davy. Directed by Rachel Leah Jones (2012) Abril 23 > The JCC Manhattan.

When an American white boy with Alabama roots becomes a Spanish flamenco guitarist in Andalucian boots, what happens along the way and behind the scenes? Gypsy Davy tells the story of David Jones, stage name: "David Serva," through his five women and five children—one of whom is the director. After all, who knows the man who came and saw and conquered, “strumming their pain with his fingers,” better than they? Part duel and part duet—between a guitar-wielding father and a camera-pointing daughter—Gypsy Davy is a personal and political portrait of a man, a family, a generation. Shot over a ten-year period in five countries across three continents, and featuring some of the finest “old-school” Gypsy Flamenco artists: Inés Bàcan, Concha Vagas, Miguel Funi, as well as some of the hottest names in American and Spanish alternative rock: Counting Crows and La Shica, not to mention a title song made famous by Woody Guthrie, Gypsy Davy is much more than another hunt-down-the-absent-father movie, it’s a home-made epic.

* The Mexican Suitcase (La Valija Mexicana). Directed by Trisha Ziff (2011). Mayo 3. In collaboration with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives (ALBA) > Casa Mezcal.

The Mexican Suitcase tells the story of the recovery of 4,500 negatives taken by photographers Robert Capa, Gerda Taro, and David Seymour during the Spanish Civil War. The film follows the journey of these negatives to Mexico – images as exiles, recovered seventy years later. The Mexican Suitcase brings together three narratives: the suitcase, the exile story, and looks at how people in Spain today address their own past, 30 years after transition. The Mexican Suitcase addresses the power of memory and asks who owns our histories?.

* Voyage to Italy. Directed by Roberto Rossellini > Mayo 1 al 9 > Film Forum.

* Madrid, 1987. Directed by David Trueba (2012).
Spectacle Theater. Junio, 2013 (Exact Date TBD).

José Sacristán and María Valverde shine in David Trueba’s intelligent, witty, and sensual new film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to great acclaim. On a hot summer day in a vacant Madrid during a period of social and political transition in Spain, Miguel, a feared and respected journalist, sets up a meeting in a café with Ángela, a young journalism student. He takes her to a friend's studio. His intentions are clearly sexual; hers are less clear. Chance events force them together for more time than they would have chosen, locked in a bathroom, naked, without the possibility of escape. Removed from the outside world, the pair, who represents polarized generations, is pitted in an unevenly matched duel involving age, intellect, ambition and experience. The political and social context of the period provides the background to the power shifts that continually take place between them over twenty-four hours.

Y más por venir: La última de Almodóvar, Los amantes pasajeros (I'm so excited) is coming soon; la última de Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity; también las esperadas: Chávez, Pacific Rim, Turbo, Sin City, Elysium, Star Trek, Fast and Furious, Getaway, The Counselor, La danza de la realidad, La contadora de películas, Europa Report y 33 días.

* WERNER HERZOG > May 18 > Whitney Museum >  Biennial > HERZOG.

Inimitable filmmaker Werner Herzog, characterized as the “romantic visionary” of New German Cinema, is best known for his unorthodox approach to capturing authenticity in his films—close encounters with danger and submitting cast members to unusual training, among others—as well as his mixture of fact and fiction, in narrative and documentary films alike. The subject of his work, described as “an extended essay on the meaning of meaninglessness,” is often the extraordinary qualities of ordinary things around us. For this program, Herzog discusses his particular contributions to the Biennial and his thoughts on contemporary art with co-curators Elisabeth Sussman and Jay Sanders.

* HYSTERIA > En Cartelera Mayo 18 > HYSTERIA.

Hysteria is a romantic comedy with an accomplished cast led by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Felicity Jones and Rupert Everett, that tells an untold tale of discovery - the surprising story of the birth of the electro-mechanical vibrator at the very peak of Victorian prudishness.

* Ridley Scott Retrospective >  May 25 - June 3 > Film Society of Lincoln Center > RIDLEY.

The retrospective will include the Director’s cut of KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, a new 35mm print of THELMA & LOUISE and the chance for fans to catch all of their favorites on the big screen.

“With ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER, Ridley Scott has been responsible for two of the most lasting and visionary works of science-fiction cinema,” said Film Society Associate Director of Programming Scott Foundas. “But as a filmmaker, he has seemed just as compelled by stories set in the distant past and those set in the combat zones of the present, always finding the human dimension in the mythic and the mythic dimension in the seemingly everyday. As he makes his long-awaited return to sci-fi with this summer’s highly anticipated PROMETHEUS, we’re delighted to pay tribute to Scott and his extraordinary career.”

NY ESSENTIALS: CINEMA IN MAY

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 , under , , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

* The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez, 1968 > Directed by John Chamberlain > Courtesy Ultra Violet > May 11 > Guggenheim.

A visually inventive experimentation in film, The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez offers a rare opportunity to consider the celluloid manifestation of Chamberlain's assemblage aesthetic. Starring Taylor Mead in the role of the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez and Ultra Violet as his beloved consort and daughter of the Aztec emperor Montezuma, this underground classic unfolds as a narrative exploration into the imagined private life of its titular character.
Please be advised that this film contains nudity.

* Tropical Tuesdays > The South Trembles > May >  Obra Negra/Casa Mezcal > Tropical.

May 8 > Yatasto. Directed by Hermes Paralluelo, Argentina, 2011, 99 min.
May 15 > En el futuro (In the Future). Directed by Mauro Andrizzi, Argentina, 2010, 60 min.
Preceded by Copia imperfecta (Imperfect Copy). Directed by José Luis Torres Leiva, Chile, 2012, 2 min. A short film tribute to the late Raul Ruiz, commissioned by the Rotterdam Film Festival.

May 22 > Süden. Directed by Gastón Solnicki, 60 min. Argentina, 2009.

* Favela on Blast > Mayo 10 > 92Y Tribeca > FAVELA.

For over 20 years, a subculture has emerged in Brazil under society's radar. It is the culture surrounding 'funk carioca', a musical rhythm which mixes the American electronic funk of the 1980s with the most diverse influences of Brazilian music. 'Baile funk' is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world, emerging from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. Directors Wesley Pentz (Diplo), teamed up with Leandro HBL in 2005 to tell the story of the MC’s, DJ’s, dancers and cultural producers who have spent their lives in the favela and are creating this vibrant scene. Together, they visited 60 favelas and conducted more than 100 interviews in order to explore the culture that surrounds Funk Carioca. In doing so, they have created a portrait of a subculture that defines the youth of Rio’s dismissed population. Directors: Leandro HBL & Wesley Pentz. 84 min. 2008. In Portuguese with English subtitles. DigiBeta.

* Lovely Molly > De Eduardo Sánchez > Sneak preview > Mayo 11 > Film Society of Lincoln Center > MOLLY.

* The Space Between: A Panorama of Cinema in Turkey > Ends May 11 > Film Society of Lincoln Center > TURKEY.

From the powerful, socially engaged cinema of 1960s filmmakers like Yılmaz Güney (a special focus of this series) to the strong current of personal auteurs (like Fatih Akın and Nuri Bilge Ceylan), Turkish cinema has always stood between traditions: richly informed about currents in European and American filmmaking while imbibing influences from Egyptian, Indian and--more recently--Iranian cinema, creating a fascinating mixture of styles and approaches.
