que se realiza hasta el 20 de Abril con eventos especiales hasta el 22 de Abril. Hemos visto crecer al festival y

El Guggenheim presenta The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez durante Abril y Mayo, mientra que NYU lanza el 3rd New Peruvian Film Festival.
Los dos eventos para los cinéfilos es sin duda el Tribeca Film Festival y el Havana Film Festival New York de los cuales ya hemos publicados sendos artículos. ( vean Homepage ).
El Instituto Cervantes tiene una gran selección este mes: Cortos Dominicanos, Documentales de Cuba y filmes de directores de origen Totonacan (Mexico)y Maya (Guatemala) como parte del Havana Film Festival NY.

* The 13th Havana Film Festival New York > April 12 - 20 > with special events April 20th at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and
April 20-22 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens > HNYFF.
HFFNY features more than 50 highly anticipated and influential films from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the U.S. including Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Venezuela and the U.S. They span a variety of genres and themes, ranging from comedy, thrillers, action, drama and documentaries to children's tales, as well as films from and about indigenous peoples from Guatemala, Colombia and Bolivia.
Opening Night Film: The Festival opens April 12th at
the Directors Guild Theatre with the N.Y. Premiere of Habanastation,
the latest film by Cuban director Ian Padrón. The film presents the
story of two young boys who become friends despite their differences; a
film that speaks of a Havana that reveals two distinct faces from the
everyday life of these youngsters.
Closing Night Film: HFFNY closes on April 20th
at 7 pm at the New York Directors Guild Theatre with the highly
anticipated N.Y. premiere of Juan of the Dead, Alejandro Brugues' second
feature film. In this first "zombie movie" made in Cuba, a series of
strange events start to develop: more and more people become violent,
attacking each other. At first, Juan believes that it's just another
stage of the Cuban revolution but then he realizes that the culprits are
not human and killing them would be very difficult.

A visually inventive experimentation in film, The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez
offers a rare opportunity to consider the celluloid manifestation of
Chamberlain's assemblage aesthetic. Starring Taylor Mead in the role of
the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez and Ultra Violet as his
beloved consort and daughter of the Aztec emperor Montezuma, this
underground classic unfolds as a narrative exploration into the imagined
private life of its titular character.

A provocative, morbidly comic drama that begins during the onset of the bloody 1973 Chilean coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende. Alfredo Castro (who played the title character in TONY MANERO,
Larraín’s previous critically acclaimed film) is a coroner’s assistant
who, while obsessively wooing an erotic dancer, is caught in the midst
of a cataclysmic event — and finds himself with a rapidly expanding game
plan. Once again, the filmmaker invests his characters with metaphoric
undertones, suffusing Santiago with a surreal visual texture that evokes
the nightmarish landscape it was rapidly becoming.
*Documentaries from Havana > Abril 18 > Instituto Cervantes > two documentaries:
- The 100 Cuban 'Sones': Cubans have
selected a list of the 100 most relevant and authentic Cuban sones in
order to merge them into the same album that contains the roots of this
genre. This small expedition travels to far places of the island in
search of the son’s essence, exalting the main characters behind the
rhythm. This is a documentary full of humor and authentic Cuban music.
Director, Edesio Alejandro, will be present for a Q&A.
- To Be A Human Being - Love: One episode of the six full-length documentaries that are part of To be a Human Being, a series made in eight diverse communities around the world by young filmmakers from film schools in seven different countries. It is a celebration of humanity, based on a simple premise that emerged from a conversation with a woman subsistence farmer in Kenya in 1986 - what we have in common is very big, and what is different between us is very interesting. The six universal human characteristics identified by the Kenyan farmer form the themes for the six Chapters of the series - Perseverance, Love, Culture, Faith, Fear and Hope. The series was produced and coordinated by the International Film and TV School (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, with other participating film schools from India, New Zealand, Portugal, Jordan, Spain and New York. The director of the institution, Rafael Rosal, will introduce.
In Spanish with English subtitles.

- The Girl, directed and written by David Riker. (USA, Mexico) – World Premiere. From the director of La Ciudad comes
this moving drama about a single mother (Abbie Cornish) caught in
emotional quicksand after losing her job and custody of her son.
Desperate to earn cash for her custody battle, she makes the daring
choice to help smuggle illegal immigrants over the border. A deep
connection to a young Mexican girl will take her on a life-changing
journey and force her to confront her past. In English, Spanish with subtitles.
- Una Noche, directed and written by Lucy Mulloy. (UK,
Cuba, USA) – North American Premiere. Fed up with catering to the
privileged tourist class, Cuban teens Raul and Elio are tantalized by
the promise of a new life in Miami. Accused of assaulting a foreigner,
Raul has no choice but to flee, but Elio must decide whether his own
escape is worth abandoning his beloved sister. Brimming with the nervous
energy of Havana’s restless youth and evocative cinematography of the
sun-bleached capital, Una Noche follows one sweltering day, full of hope and fraught with tensions, that burns to a shocking climax. In Spanish with subtitles.
- Unit 7 (Grupo 7), directed by Alberto Rodriguez,
written by Rafael Cobos and Alberto Rodriguez. (Spain) – International
Premiere. Unit 7 is a semi-official police detail with a seemingly
impossible mission: kick Seville’s most vicious drug trafficking ring
out of town ahead of a major international expo. By any means necessary.
As they slip outside the bounds of the law in the name of duty, two
officers fueled by violence, lies, and ambition end up on opposing
paths. Spanish superstar Mario Casas (Neon Flesh) stars in this adrenaline-pumping action thriller. In Spanish with subtitles.

* Festival of New Peruvian Films > Abril 20 al 27 > Centro Rey Juan Carlos I de la NYU >> PERU.
PERUFEST presents the most recent cinematographic productions from Peru, screening short and feature films from the new generation of Peruvian directors. Many of these young filmmakers have been awarded prizes in festivals such as: Cannes, Berlin, San Sebastián, Biarritz, La Habana, amongst others.
In its current edition, the main theme of PERUFEST will be the politics of memory that relate to the internal armed conflict in Peru (1980-2000).

Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando's younger brother Raúl (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fiancée, Sonia (Genesis Rodríguez) and pledges to settle all his father's debt. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael García Bernal).
