AMERICAS & AMERICANS FESTIVAL AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

“This festival is one that is meant to link us as a people so that borders dissolve, and we find those common threads and musical moments which unite North and South America as one. This is our music.” – Gustavo Dudamel, Festival Director.

Americas and Americans is a festival that celebrates music from North and South America and the shared heritage and cultural experiences across the hemispheres. With a long-standing belief that barriers can be broken through art, Americas and Americans brings to life Dudamel’s global vision of a multi-cultural community unified by music. One of the major events of his 2009/10 inaugural season at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Americas and Americans now comes to the Hollywood Bowl in a week-long celebration encompassing a wide-ranging program that spans the musical spectrum.
Americas & Americans will take place August 14 - 19.

Here is the line up!

* DUDAMEL & JUAN LUIS GUERRA > August 14

Joining Gustavo Dudamel and the
Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra is singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra, who popularized the bachata and merengue genres from the Dominican Republic. His unique sound, a mix of rhythms and melodies from a variety of styles, is beloved around the world.

* RUBÉN BLADES & EDDIE PALMIERI SALSA ORCHESTRA > August 15

Two titans of salsa share the bill! Iconic Panamanian singer-actor-politician Rubén Blades, the “Latin Bruce Springsteen,” makes his eagerly awaited return to the Bowl. The evening also features legendary Puerto Rican pianist Eddie Palmieri and his fiery Salsa Orchestra.

* DUDAMEL CONDUCTS GINESTERA & COPLAND > With Sergio Tempo > August 16

Just as Copland captured the wide-open plains of the U.S., Ginastera (who studied with Copland) fashioned a style that reflects the gaucho in the pampas of Argentina; both epitomize music of the Americas.

JUANES WITH THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA >  August 17 - 18

Colombian superstar Juanes has become the leading all-Spanish language music artist in the world. An electrifying guitarist and gifted songwriter, the 17-time Latin Grammy winner has made a global impact with his blend of rock en español and traditional Latin American rhythms, as well as with his commitment to social change through music.

* DUDAMEL & DOMINGO! > August 19

The world’s greatest tenor joins Gustavo Dudamel for the first time in concert for an unforgettable evening of Latin songs and operatic arias.

Children of the Plumed Serpent: the Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico in Los Angeles

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Thursday, June 28, 2012 , under , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

Children of the Plumed Serpent: the Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico follows the historical trajectory of the life and epic stories of the culture-hero and deity, Quetzalcoatl. The exhibition, taking place at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), examines the art and material objects of late pre-Columbian and early colonial societies across Mexico to explore Quetzalcoatl’s role as founder and benefactor of the Nahua-, Mixtec-, and Zapotec-dominated kingdoms of southern Mexico. These socially and culturally complex communities successfully resisted both Aztec and Spanish subjugation, flourishing during an era of unprecedented international entrepreneurship and cultural innovation. On view are painted manuscripts (codices), polychrome ceramics, textiles, and exquisite works of gold, turquoise, and shell that reflect the achievements of the Children of the Plumed Serpent.

About: Presenting a complex synthesis of art and politics, this exhibition explores Mexico's distinctively rich and diverse photography tradition from the 1920s to the present. It begins in the period following the Mexican Revolution, when international artists such as Tina Modotti and Edward Weston found creative inspiration in Mexico and, in turn, helped to inspire Mexican photographers like Lola Álvarez Bravo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Including photographs made for the illustrated press at midcentury and documentary investigations from the 1970s and 1980s, the exhibition concludes with contemporary examinations of social, environmental, and economic concerns both within Mexico and along its northern border. The selection of more than 150 photographs showcases works by Manuel Carrillo, Graciela Iturbide, Elsa Medina, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Mariana Yampolsky, and many more.
