AMERICAS & AMERICANS FESTIVAL AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

“This festival is one that is meant to link us as a people so that borders dissolve, and we find those common threads and musical moments which unite North and South America as one. This is our music.” – Gustavo Dudamel, Festival Director.

Americas and Americans is a festival that celebrates music from North and South America and the shared heritage and cultural experiences across the hemispheres. With a long-standing belief that barriers can be broken through art, Americas and Americans brings to life Dudamel’s global vision of a multi-cultural community unified by music. One of the major events of his 2009/10 inaugural season at Walt Disney Concert Hall with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Americas and Americans now comes to the Hollywood Bowl in a week-long celebration encompassing a wide-ranging program that spans the musical spectrum.
Americas & Americans will take place August 14 - 19.

Here is the line up!

* DUDAMEL & JUAN LUIS GUERRA > August 14

Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra is singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra, who popularized the bachata and merengue genres from the Dominican Republic. His unique sound, a mix of rhythms and melodies from a variety of styles, is beloved around the world.

* RUBÉN BLADES & EDDIE PALMIERI SALSA ORCHESTRA > August 15

Two titans of salsa share the bill! Iconic Panamanian singer-actor-politician Rubén Blades, the “Latin Bruce Springsteen,” makes his eagerly awaited return to the Bowl. The evening also features legendary Puerto Rican pianist Eddie Palmieri and his fiery Salsa Orchestra.

* DUDAMEL CONDUCTS GINESTERA & COPLAND > With Sergio Tempo > August 16

About: Presenting a complex synthesis of art and politics, this exhibition explores Mexico's distinctively rich and diverse photography tradition from the 1920s to the present. It begins in the period following the Mexican Revolution, when international artists such as Tina Modotti and Edward Weston found creative inspiration in Mexico and, in turn, helped to inspire Mexican photographers like Lola Álvarez Bravo and Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Including photographs made for the illustrated press at midcentury and documentary investigations from the 1970s and 1980s, the exhibition concludes with contemporary examinations of social, environmental, and economic concerns both within Mexico and along its northern border. The selection of more than 150 photographs showcases works by Manuel Carrillo, Graciela Iturbide, Elsa Medina, Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Mariana Yampolsky, and many more.

Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama
