NEON BABY EN EL TEATRO PREGONES

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Saturday, May 25, 2013 , under , , , , , , | comments (0)

Pregones is thrilled to announce a new world premiere musical play, born and bred by our award winning ensemble, right here in Da Bronx!
Inspired by the life of b-boy and muse Juan Rivera and the book Queer Latino Testimonio, Keith Haring and Juanito Xtravaganza: Hard Tails by Arnaldo Cruz Malavé, NEON BABY is a funky new musical set in a mythical dance club called Paradise —inspired by the famed Paradise Garage— where runaway gay youths of color find the family and the courage to let their better selves shine through.
Two passions take center stage in the story: First, the passion of a mother praying from a distance for her son's safety and well-being in the big city, amidst the AIDS crisis. Second, the furious bond between the runaway boy, the city that seduces him, the man that breaks his heart, and and the strangers who welcome and cherish him as one of their own.
NEON BABY is a funkalicious story about the love of a mother for her son, a son for his mother, a boy for his sisters and brothers, blood family and chosen family, lovers and fighters — each and all hopeful and fierce and drunk with radiant music.
A lifting remembrance of New York City at the turn of the last century, and a love letter to the children who made that era truly legendary!

UPDATED! NY ESSENTIALS : TEATRO Y DANZA > WINTER- SPRING 2013

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 , under , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

* The Public Theater is staging the English Language Premiere of NEVA. Written and Directed by Guillermo Calderón.> Ends March 31 > Neva.

Chekhov is dead. Revolution is in the air. Time to rehearse.
In a gorgeously crafted reflection on life, art and the revolutionary impulse, Chilean writer-director Guillermo Calderón’s NEVA tells the story of Anton Chekhov’s widow, the actress Olga Knipper, who arrives in a cold and dimly lit theater in St. Petersburg in the winter of 1905 to rehearse The Cherry Orchard. As she and two other actors await the rest of the cast, they huddle together, act out scenes from their lives and muse on their art form and on love - while, unseen, striking workers are being gunned down in the streets by the Tsarist regime during what will be known as Bloody Sunday. Political and human, haunting and fresh, this smart, thrilling and often humorous ensemble work will envelop you just as you least expect it and stir what it means to create art in violent times.
Featuring Bianca Amato, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, Luke Robertson.

* DanceBrazil > Mar 19—24 > Teatro Joyce.

For over three decades, the infectious Afro-Brazilian rhythms, pinpoint precision, and sheer power of DanceBrazil performances have astonished audiences around the world. This spring, the company returns to The Joyce with a premiere by Artistic Director Jelon Vieira and the return of Imfazwe, a powerful meditation on war, combat—and dance. As always, Capoeira, the mesmerizing martial art with an African beat, and live music drive the action on stage.

* AfroTango > Enero 25 - Marzo 17 > Thalia Theater > Tango.

A World Premiere tango musical with music arranged and directed by Latin Grammy winner Raul Jaurena! Produced, Designed & Directed by Angel Gil Orrios.

MAESTRO RAUL JAURENA was born and raised in Uruguay, and his music is inspired by his roots. His arrangements combine the traditional roots of Tango and Milonga with the rhythms and dance of Candombe, the voice of the African communities in Uruguay. His music reflects the influences of the different cultures as well as one hundred years of tango history with all its contradicting emotions.
CANDOMBE, also known as Tango Negro, is an African-derived rhythm that has been an important part of Uruguayan culture for over 200 years. It is what survives of the ancestral heritage of Bantu culture, brought to Uruguay by enslaved Africans. During colonial times, they called their drums tangó, and used this term to refer to the place where they gathered to perform their Candombe dances; by extension, the dances themselves were also called tangós. Candombe music uses three drums called “repique”, “chico” and “piano”. Tango developed simultaneously in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although typically regarded as the creation of Italian and Spanish immigrants, the tango's music and the dance movements associated with it were deeply influenced by African dance and music.

* Ballet Hispánico > Apr 16—28 > Teatro Joyce.

"Dancing better than ever" (Backstage), Ballet Hispanico celebrates its 25th season at The Joyce with a vibrant snapshot of contemporary Spanish dance. Program highlights include a world premiere by Cayetano Soto, one of the most dynamic and ground-breaking Spanish choreographers of his generation, and the Joyce premiere of an homage to 1980s Europop created by the cutting-edge Spanish duo Inma García and Meritxell Barberá. The Joyce premiere of Danzónby Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro and rousing repertory gems further showcase the multidimensional company. For more performances nationwide visit > Hispanico.

* En El Tiempo De Las Mariposas > Enero 19, 25 y 29 | Febrero 10 y 14 > En Repertorio Español.

En el tiempo de las mariposas. Photo Michael Palma.

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.

Based on Julia Álvarez’s popular novel, the martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production by the talented duo – playwright Caridad Svich and director José Zayas– that brought us the critically acclaimed production of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” in 2009.

ARTE : HONEY, I REARRANGED THE COLLECTION

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Monday, January 28, 2013 , under , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

Created in 1986, the Bronx Museum Permanent Collection has assembled over the years a remarkable group of artworks that convey not only personal narratives but also incisive insights onto contemporary life. For this exhibition, we took inspiration from Allen Ruppersberg's ongoing series Honey, I rearranged the Collection initiated in 2000 and that puts in check the role of institutions, curators and collectors as the bearers of tradition and arbiters of taste. Overlaying different traditions, styles, and narratives, Honey, I rearranged the Collection presents an idea of museum as a restless play of combination.
Honey, I Rearranged the Collection features artworks from the 40th Anniversary's 40 Years, 40 Gifts campaign, which has received support from Ford Foundation and the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust, as well as individual funders.
HONEY, I REARRANGED THE COLLECTION > Celebrating 40 years > Enero 24 - Junio 2 > BRONX.

URBAN ARCHIVES: THE RITUALS OF CHAOS AT THE BRONX MUSEUM

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Monday, December 10, 2012 , under , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

This group exhibition, named after Carlos Monsivais' book of the same title, takes the work of Mexico's renowned photojournalist, Enrique Metinides, as a departure point and complements it with the work of contemporary artists who also capture the human experience in the metropolis. The photographs and video-based works provide a glimpse into the emotions and events that run rampant in cities where massive concentrations of people congregate, including notions of isolation and chaos. Guest curator Monica Espinel organized Rituals of Chaos. Featured artists include: Enrique Metinides, Sophie Calle, Robin Graubard, Gordon Matta-Clark, Rick Liss, Jamel Shabazz, and others.

Música en el Teatro Pregones del Bronx

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Saturday, March 26, 2011 , under , , , , | comments (0)

MARZO 19: With a four-piece international band and four world-class dancers, MONKTANGO is a sure bet. The formidable musical lineup features KONRAD ADDERLY on bass, OCTAVIO BRUNETTI on piano, NICK DANIELSON on a violin, and maestro TITO CASTRO on bandoneon. Together, they offer up a fresh take on the music and indomitable spirit of jazz giant THELONIOUS MONK. Argentine dancers HERNÁN BRIZUELA, DIEGO BLANCO, and guests go at it in electrifying choreographic counterpoint.

MARZO 25: Grammy-nominee Papo Vázquez and his Pirates Troubadours know how to kick it in high gear and this gig is no exception. Expect a stompin' delivery of BATACUMBELE's classic "Danzón Don Vázquez" and a taste of the maestro's forthcoming new CD. With PAPO VÁZQUEZ on trombone, WILLIE WILLIAMS on sax, ZACCAI CURTIS on piano, DEZRON DOUGLAS on bass, JOHN DAVIS on drums, ANTHONY CARRILLO and CARLOS MALDONADO on percussion, and special guests AKUA DIXON's QUARTETTE INDIGO. And did we mention Papo is also one of our 2011 Latino Masters awardees?.

MARZO 27:  Led by NEA National Heritage Fellow JUAN GUTIÉRREZ, Los Pleneros de la 21 are reigning champions of an enduring Afro Puerto Rican musical tradition. From Sesame Street to Carnegie Hall, they've played more venues than you can shake a stick at, propelling the whole world into the 21st Century, rhythm first! Their SERIES WRAP-UP concert and dance performance for March Is Music is always a raucous and sold-out affair. With special guest PAPO VÁZQUEZ. A Boricua classic!

Sonia Sotomayor Round-Up

Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE on Friday, July 17, 2009 , under , , , , , , , , , | comments (0)

Its is almost certain that Sonia Sotomayor will be the next Supreme Court Justice. It is also certain that Republicans are spent. The hearings were very civil and it was pretty clear early on, that Republicans didn't have anything of substance to try to derail her nomination.
Earlier today, Sen Lugar(R) said: "Judge Sotomayor is clearly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court and she has demonstrated a judicial temperament during her week-long nomination hearing. Judge Sotomayor has had a distinguished career of public service. She is well regarded in the legal community and by her peers. I will vote to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States."
Two more republicnas senators, Olympia Snowe (R) and Mel Martínez, the only hispanic republican senator, announced their support as well. Martinez said: "Given her judicial record, and her testimony this week, it is my determination that Judge Sotomayor is well-qualified to serve as Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court."
Are the boyz coming around? Mayor Bloomberg himself in Washington to support Sotomayor said: "I strongly believe she should be supported by Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. And I should know, because I've been all three."
The hearings were taken as very useless for some, as instructive for others, generally in a positive tone. One can certainly understand the frustration with a process that doesn't allow much in terms of real discussion and understanding. Nonetheless, the hearings give us a glance, a better understanding of the res public. It does engage citizens.
The use of gender and racial politics dominated the hearings. GOPers playing their part. The media and progressive bloggers went after this GOP tactic.
Peggy Drexler on HuffPost speaks a this bias: Gender and the Judge: Sotomayor Encounters a Familiar Bias.  Maureen Dowdfrom the NYT in White Man’s Last Stand , seems to be having fun writing that "A wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not know that a gaggle of white Republican men afraid of extinction are out to trip her up."  Sotomayor kept clear of any tricks. Smart Latina. hehe.
Gail Collins ( NYT)is also having fun: Day after day she gives us some bits of conversation from the hearing, with the real meaning of it, I guess. In 3 Days of the Sotomayor :

"SENATOR RUSS FEINGOLD: Judge Sotomayor, if confirmed, you will join the Supreme Court with more federal judicial experience than any justice in the past 100 years. And, therefore, I will devote my time to complaining about the way the Bush administration pummeled our civil liberties.

SENATOR ORRIN HATCH:Mr. Chairman, thank you for the opportunity to point out that we once had a Hispanic nominee for something, and the Democrats filibustered him."
Wonkette goes after the GOP in: Republicans Just Give Up On Sotomayor :' Having failed to provoke a “meltdown” or a comical Rosie Perez-style torrent of Spanish invective, GOP senators have run out of options and may just have to let this one through.
A discordant note was Linda Chavez who came out in strong opposition to Sotomayor's nomination. As per The Hill : "Do not vote to confirm this nominee," Chavez said. "It is clear from Judge Sotomayor's record that she has drunk deep from the well of identity politics. I know a lot about that well, and I can tell you that it is dark and poisonous… Judge Sotomayor has repeatedly said that race, ethnicity and gender are determinants of one's point of view.". Siempre hay un agufiestas, te digo. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnellis another one, but then everyone expects that.

See what I mean? All Good. Want to go deeper?  NYT Topics: Sonia Sotomayor
Well, confirmation is almost assured. Obama called her 'inspiring', others a Trailblazer and a Dreamer
As for me, I hope Sotomayor to be a force to bring positive change. Progressive change.
