El Public Theater monta NEVA escrita y dirigida por Guillermo Calderón hasta finales de Marzo. Por su parte, el Repertorio Español ha estrenado Fuenteovejuna, de Lope de Vega, una de las obras seminales del teatro en español, adaptada esta vez a una corporación moderna. Sigue presentando, además, Entrada Gratis, Bésame Mucho y El Amor en los Tiempos del Cólera. En Queens, Afro-Tango o Tango Negro, explorando la riqueza musical del Uruguay, termina su presentación en el Teatro Thalia y, en el Bronx, el Teatro Pregones vuelve con su revista anual de música, March is Music.
Los amantes de la Danza tendrán la oportunidad de disfrutar de los nuevos programas de la compañía DanceBrazil y del Ballet Hispánico.

In a gorgeously crafted reflection on life, art and the revolutionary impulse, Chilean writer-director Guillermo Calderón’s NEVA tells the story of Anton Chekhov’s widow, the actress Olga Knipper, who arrives in a cold and dimly lit theater in St. Petersburg in the winter of 1905 to rehearse The Cherry Orchard. As she and two other actors await the rest of the cast, they huddle together, act out scenes from their lives and muse on their art form and on love - while, unseen, striking workers are being gunned down in the streets by the Tsarist regime during what will be known as Bloody Sunday. Political and human, haunting and fresh, this smart, thrilling and often humorous ensemble work will envelop you just as you least expect it and stir what it means to create art in violent times.

This spring, the company returns to The Joyce with a premiere by Artistic Director Jelon Vieira and the return of Imfazwe, a powerful meditation on war, combat—and dance. As always, Capoeira, the mesmerizing martial art with an African beat, and live music drive the action on stage.

La obra está basada en hechos reales ocurridos en la ciudad española de Fuenteovejuna (actualmente Fuente Obejuna) donde una población entera tomó la justicia en sus propias manos y asesinó a su cruel gobernante. Cuando un magistrado visitó la ciudad para investigar lo sucedido, los pobladores respondieron diciendo: “Fuenteovejuna lo hizo”. El director transportará la obra a la actualidad situándola en una corporación moderna.

MAESTRO RAUL JAURENA was born and raised in Uruguay, and his music is inspired by his roots. His arrangements combine the traditional roots of Tango and Milonga with the rhythms and dance of Candombe, the voice of the African communities in Uruguay. His music reflects the influences of the different cultures as well as one hundred years of tango history with all its contradicting emotions.
CANDOMBE, also known as Tango Negro, is an African-derived rhythm that has been an important part of Uruguayan culture for over 200 years. It is what survives of the ancestral heritage of Bantu culture, brought to Uruguay by enslaved Africans. During colonial times, they called their drums tangó, and used this term to refer to the place where they gathered to perform their Candombe dances; by extension, the dances themselves were also called tangós. Candombe music uses three drums called “repique”, “chico” and “piano”. Tango developed simultaneously in Montevideo, Uruguay, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Although typically regarded as the creation of Italian and Spanish immigrants, the tango's music and the dance movements associated with it were deeply influenced by African dance and music.

Pablo Zinger, director musical de zarzuelas y antologías musicales de Repertorio Español, regresa a la compañía con un nuevo programa que celebra las contribuciones musicales de compositoras latinoamericanas. La antología incluye adoradas canciones tales como “Bésame mucho”, “Dos gardenias”, “Júrame”, “Cachito”, “Olas y arena” y “Gracias a la vida” interpretadas por extraordinarias voces con música en vivo.

Algunas de las compositoras cuyas canciones forman parte del programa, incluyen Sylvia Rexach (Puerto Rico), María Grever y Consuelo Velásquez (México), Isolina Carrillo y Ernestina Lecuona (Cuba), Chabuca Granda (Perú), Violeta Parra (Chile) y Eladia Blázquez y María Elena Walsh (Argentina).

Escrita por Caridad Svich y dirigida por José Zayas, el mismo dúo que nos trajo las adaptaciones de Julia Álvarez, "En el tiempo de las mariposas" e Isabel Allende, "La casa de los espíritus".

Una lírica obra teatral repleta de imágenes dramáticas que se enfoca en la extraordinaria historia de amor entre un hombre con inclinaciones poéticas llamado Florentino Ariza y una mujer sensual, práctica y evasiva llamada Fermina Daza. La acción de la obra atraviesa cincuenta años y la historia se presenta en una serie de escenas repletas de movimiento, poesía, canciones y momentos de exuberante dramatismo. Un audaz tour-de-force teatral para cuatro actores.

“In The Time of the Butterflies” is the story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960.

Based on Julia Álvarez’s popular novel, the martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production by the talented duo – playwright Caridad Svich and director José Zayas– that brought us the critically acclaimed production of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits” in 2009.
