Septiembre llega con una ciudad re-energizada después del asueto veraniego y lista para la temporada atoñal que llena el calendario social y cultural a todos los niveles. La última adquisición del MOMA, IKEA Disobedients se presenta en su sede PS1 de Queens y varios artistas españoles y latinoamericanos exhiben en lugares tales como el Parque Wave Hill, el Jardín Botánico y en varias galerías de Chelsea: Manolo Valdés, Roberto Diago, Maria Martinez-Cañas, Ines Medina e Isidro Blasco entre otros. Algunas de las grandes exhibiciones del verano como Art of Another Kind, en el Guggenheim, cierran pronto. Otras, como Caribbean Crossroads, exhibición conjunta entre el El Museo del Barrio, Queens Museum of Art y el Studio Museum de Harlem continúa, asi como la escultura Cloud City del argentino Tomás Saraceno en el roof del Met Museum. El Instituto Cervantes también presenta una muestra de jóvenes arquitectos españoles.

* IKEA Disobedients : Andrés Jaque Arquitectos >> SUNDAY SESSIONS > September 16 and 23 > MOMA PS1> IKEA
IKEA Disobedients, an architectural performance by Madrid-based Andrés Jaque Arquitectos, was recently acquired by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). The international premiere of the performance at MoMA PS1, part of the 9+1 Ways of Being Political exhibition on view concurrently at MoMA, reveals how recent architectural practices utilize performative actions to engage audiences with architecture in a non-traditional way.
The performance takes place in a setting made of IKEA-hacked pieces and invites neighbors in Queens to reenact their politically-charged domestic activities. According to Jaque, the performance suggests disobedience to the lifestyles proposed by brands such as IKEA, proposing "an urban counter-notion of the domestic" instead—one that discloses how politically active citizens can and do act outside of the privacy of their homes.
The performance takes place in a setting made of IKEA-hacked pieces and invites neighbors in Queens to reenact their politically-charged domestic activities. * Roberto Diago: Entre Lineas | Between the Lines > Septiembre 6 - Octubre 13 > Magnan Metz Gallery > DIAGO.
Roberto Diago (b. 1971 Cuba) graduated from San Alejandro National Academy of Visual Arts in 1990. His works combine painting, collage and mixed media techniques, exploring themes of his identity as a contemporary Cuban, and as a man of African ancestry. He has received numerous national and international prizes and awards. In recent years, he has been regularly featured in solo and group shows throughout Cuba and Latin America as well as the United States, Canada and Europe.

Martinez-Cañas' fifth solo show at the gallery is comprised of a series of "Photo Paintings", large scale unique works completed during 2011/12. Her concept is derived from Francis Bacon's use of photographs to inform his paintings, and each work is an homage to a different modernist artist whom she admires, including Muybridge, and Louise Bourgeois. Cañas uses a gesture from Bacon's paintings as the starting point for the work and a variety of media including photo transfer, painting and collage on wood veneer giving equal weight to the paint and photographic image.

Despite their varied experiences and personal cultural backgrounds Ines Medina (Basque Country, Spain) and Katherine Taylor (USA) have over the years evolved into artists whose respective works are governed by sensibilities that explore broader, fluid aesthetic possibilities that respond to and signifies current expanded parameters of art-making and socio-cultural identities. As artists working in a milieu fraught with the possibilities of shifting, multiple and hybrid identities, they are acutely aware of the new challenges to the existing models for explaining the forms of belonging and patterns of exchange that the dynamics of globalization have wrought.

Drawing inspiration from the natural landscape of the Botanical Garden, seven towering sculptures by acclaimed Spanish artist Manolo Valdés showcase the relationship between art and nature. The sculptures have been sited to take maximum advantage of the Garden's dramatic views with special attention given to the visual impact of the changing seasons. The artist has designed the installation to include surprising changes in the visual character of the sculptures throughout the seasons.

Spanish-born artist Isidro Blasco combines architecture, photography, and sculptural installation to explore themes of perception and urbanism. His large-scale sculptures buttress three-dimensional photographic collages in which shots taken from multiple angles pivot around a single vantage point. The result is a fragmented view, an elliptical succession of various perspectives that produces a dynamic experience of space that is at once alluring and disorienting. For Flow System, Blasco has taken hundreds of photographs of the Palisades, the Palisades Interstate Park, and the George Washington Bridge from points in New Jersey, Washington Heights, Inwood, and the Bronx. The images are assembled to create an articulated, panoramic, sculptural collage that fills the gallery space. The work is a departure for the artist, whose subject is often architecture and streetscapes. Here, he has focused on the rocks, trees, and structures of the Palisades, presenting a multi-faceted rendering of this breathtaking natural landscape.

In The End of Civilisation, a grand piano burns at a remote site deep in the Cumbrian landscape. This lushly green and desolate locale overlooking the boundary between England and Scotland was once the border of the Roman Empire. The grand piano, emblematic of high culture as both a finely crafted instrument and a beautiful sculptural object, is destroyed at the primeval edge of civilization. With this symbolic conflagration, Gordon re-enacts an ancient local tradition of igniting beacons as an admonition or communication. Inspired in part by the journey of the 2012 Olympic torch across the British Isles, The End of Civilisation is both a celebration and a warning—of fire as a symbol of optimism and hope, but also of risk, danger, and destruction.

Rise and Fall of Apartheid: Photography and the Bureaucracy of Everyday Life is a photographic exhibition examining the legacy of the apartheid system and how it penetrated even the most mundane aspects of social existence in South Africa, from housing, public amenities, and transportation to education, tourism, religion, and businesses. Complex, vivid, evocative, and dramatic, it includes nearly 500 photographs, films, books, magazines, newspapers, and assorted archival documents and covers more than 60 years of powerful photographic and visual production that forms part of the historical record of South Africa. Several photographic strategies, from documentary to reportage, social documentary to the photo essay, were each adopted to examine the effects and after-effects of apartheid's political, social, economic, and cultural legacy. Curated by Okwui Enwezor with Rory Bester, the exhibition proposes a complex understanding of photography and the aesthetic power of the documentary form and honors the exceptional achievement of South African photographers.

Comprising approximately 100 works by nearly 70 artists, like José Guerrero (above), the exhibition explores international trends in abstraction in the decade before the Guggenheim's iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building opened in October 1959, when vanguard artists working in the United States and Europe pioneered such influential art forms as Abstract Expressionism, Cobra, and Art Informel.

Artist Tomás Saraceno (born in Tucumán, Argentina, in 1973) createD a constellation of large, interconnected modules constructed with transparent and reflective materials for the Museum's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. Visitors may enter and walk through these habitat-like, modular structures grouped in a nonlinear configuration. Over the past decade, Saraceno has established a practice of constructing habitable networks based upon complex geometries and interconnectivity that merge art, architecture, and science. The interdisciplinary project "Cloud Cities/Air Port City" is rooted in the artist's investigation of expanding the ways in which we inhabit and experience our environment.

The exhibition Caribbean: Crossroads of the World is the culmination of nearly a decade of collaborative research and scholarship organized by El Museo del Barrio in conjunction with the Queens Museum of Art and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Presenting work at the three museums and accompanied by an ambitious range of programs and events, Caribbean: Crossroads offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the diverse and impactful cultural history of the Caribbean basin and its diaspora. More than 500 works of art spanning four centuries illuminate changing aesthetics and ideologies and provoke meaningful conversations about topics ranging from commerce and cultural hybridity to politics and pop culture.

This exhibition features works that explore the vast diversity and complexity of the Caribbean basin, as an accompaniment to El Museo’s upcoming exhibition, Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, presented in collaboration with Studio Museum in Harlem and Queens Museum of Art.

Picasso Black and White, the first major exhibition to focus on the artist’s lifelong exploration of a black-and-white palette throughout his career, will be presented at the Guggenheim Museum from October 5, 2012, to January 23, 2013. The exhibition features 118 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from 1904 to 1971, and will offer new and striking insights into Picasso’s vision and working methods. This chronological presentation includes significant loans—many of which have not been exhibited or published before—drawn from museum, private, and public collections across Europe and the United States, including numerous works from the Picasso family. Following its New York presentation, a major part of the exhibition will travel to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, where it will be on view from February 24 to May 27, 2013.

Gabriel Orozco’s Asterisms, the final project of the commissioning program at Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin, is a two-part sculptural and photographic installation comprising thousands of items of detritus the artist has gathered at two sites—a playing field near his home in New York and a protected coastal biosphere in Baja California Sur, Mexico, that is also the repository for flows of industrial and commercial waste from across the Pacific Ocean.

El calendario de arte se mantiene básicamente igual este mes y solo añadimos la nueva muestra del artista vasco MENCHU GAL en el Instituto Cervantes. La exhibición Caribbean Crossroads de El Museo del Barrio, Queens Museum of Art y el Studio Museum de Harlem continúa, asi como Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, con artistas latinos tales como José Guerrero y Antoni Tàpies. La escultura Cloud City del argentino Tomás Saraceno también sigue en el roof del Met Museum. Estas son cuatro exhibiciones que les recomendamos no se pierdan en Nueva York. La National Gallery de Washington muestra la obra de Miró en 'Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape’ y el Museum of Fine Arts de Boston celebra sus dos nuevas alas de exhibición, a saber, Art of the Americas y Contemporary Art.

Menchu Gal (Irún 1919 - 2008) fue una de las pocas creadoras que brilló en un mundo dominado por hombres, durante los oscuros años de la posguerra, además de convertirse en la primera mujer que consiguió el Premio Nacional de Pintura.
Frente a su obra, el espectador es capaz de conectar con la calidez de los interiores, con el olor a sal de sus paisajes marinos, con esos trozos de exterior atrapados en los que se siente el latido de la vida. Los cuadros de la artista vasca invitan al observador a caminar con ella, a seguir sus huellas y a trazar un mapa de afinidades compartidas en el que cada uno acabará elaborando su propio itinerario. Además, si algo caracteriza la obra de Menchu Gal (más allá de la influencia del cubismo o el fauvismo), es la sensación de cercanía y de energía positiva aún latente. A través de los retratos de la vendimia, azoteas y atardeceres, nos adentra en unmundo de fábula donde todo es posible.

In his large-scale murals and the smaller, related portraits of the 1960s and 1970s, Avedon sought to depict the spirit of the times. The transgendered Candy Darling and the naked Taylor Mead testify to the provocative countercultural behavior of the Factory; the positioning of characters within the mural suggest a complicated group dynamic. The spirit of political rebellion is embodied by the Chicago Seven mural, as well as the individual photos of writer Jean Genet, Weatherman leader Bernardine Dohrn, and former turf gang-turned-human rights group, the Young Lords. The expanding definition of the American family is represented by the mural of the Ginsbergs, while earlier images of Allen in nude embrace with his partner Peter Orlovsky, were found to be too shocking for most publications in 1963. Finally, the war administrators—the Mission Council—are juxtaposed with victims of the war: Vietnamese survivors of napalm attacks. Powerful and dynamic, Avedon's images became icons of their embattled times that resonate for the present and future.

The exhibition delves into the transitions of place, subject matter, and technique during his 20-year photographic career. Rocco’s uses his unique documentary style to takes us on a jaunt through his childhood neighborhood of South Philadelphia, the gritty North Philadelphia barrio where he has worked his entire adult life as a public school teacher, and his ongoing investigations of his mother’s native Colombia. TRANSICIONES also shows Rocco’s technical progression as we see his experimentations with color and digital photography that compliment his foundation in traditional black and white.

Ticked PINK means “to be delighted” and to “glow with pleasure” and when you see the vibrant palettes, rich textures and imagined worlds in the artwork of our group of international artists you’ll bask in those feelings as well. There are the pulsating digital orbs of Canadian artist Franco DeFrancesca and the expressionistic organic landscapes of Los Angeles Flow artist Kimber Berry, as well as thickly layered and dimensional paintings of Austin artist, Allison Gregory that literally drip with joy. And everyone is sure to delight in "El Corazon Inocente" by Argentinian artist, Ana Maria Hernando. The limited edition lithograph is covered by hand cut petals of rice paper.
