GUIA LATINA DEL SUMMERSTAGE IN NYC

¿Quién no se ha pasado una tarde de verano en SummerStage? Aún recuerdo el conciertazo de Jovanotti, Los Amigos Invisibles y Natalia Lafourcade, por mencionar uno!. Summerstage es 'a must' para cada neoyorquino que se precie y para más de un visitante, claro!.

Si queremos medir la importancia de un festival debemos mirar a su arraigo en la comunidad que lo sustenta y de la que es un reflejo. Erika Elliott, Directora Artística de SummerStage lo tiene claro, por supuesto. Celebrando la edición 27, Erika dirige el festival de arte más grande de la ciudad con más de 100 performances en 18 parques: "Aspiramos a representar lo que es NYC... y la cultura Latina es fuerte y formada por muchas comunidades", me dice Erika en una animada conversación que sostuvimos la semana pasada.

Y es una comunidad que sigue creciendo y cambiando: A las comunidades de larga data de Puerto Rico, República Dominicana y Colombia se unen ahora nuevas olas de España, Venezuela, Brasil y México, por ejemplo.

Limón Dance Company
Y esto se refleja en la programación. La presencia de artistas latinos es fuerte y cada año se añaden más elementos al 'mix'. Por ejemplo: la Limón Dance Company que celebra sus 65 años se une al maestro Paquito D'Rivera en una colaboración que será única; lo mismo pasará con la primera actuación conjunta de Ozomatli y la NY Pops Orchestra!. Mala Rodriguez y Ximena Sarinana, José Alberto El Canario, Paige Hernández, Mando Alvarado, Kinky, Andes Manta y Frankie Negrón; Felix Hernández y Bebel Gilberto... y la lista se extiende. Estas interacciones serán semillas que multiplicarán la riqueza y la diversidad de nuestra experiencia cultural.

Y recuerden, SummerStage no es solo Central Park!. Aunque la conección es fuerte, el festival se desarrolla en 18 de los parques que conforman la red en la ciudad. Erika Elliott me enfatiza el esfuerzo que se ha hecho, particularmente desde el año pasado, para promover el festival como un evento a nivel ciudad, metropolitano. Para Ms Elliott, que tiene 8 años como Directora Artística, lo esencial para lograrlo es 'conectar la música con cada vecindario'. Que así sea.
Los performances van desde pop, Latin y world music hasta danza y teatro.

Música que te quiero música!. Si algo te conecta con el calorcito del verano y con las actividades al aire libre es la música que se apodera de toda la ciudad durante estos meses. Y los que se llevan el premio son, sin duda, los grandes festivales que nos traen algunas de los cantantes y músicos más reconocidos del mundo. SummerStage y Celebrate Brooklyn tienen una cartelera estupenda. Además tenemos el BlueNote Jazz Festival y el Festival Make Music New York. Entre los invitados están Arturo Sandoval, Buika, Gato Barbieri, Calle 13, Ballet Hispánico, Ximena Sarinana, Bebel Gilberto, SiSé, Tribecastan, La Excelencia, Chicha Libre, la música de Aurelio de La Vega, Ariadna Castellanos y Cristina Morrison, entre otros.

Aruán Ortiz hit the ground running when he burst onto the American jazz scene in 2003. A classically trained violist and pianist, this Santiago de Cuba native's sound is as marked by the influence of contemporary classical composers like Schoenberg, Ravel, and Copland as by traditional Afro-Cuban sounds and jazz greats Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Thelonious Monk.

Los Artistas Angelica de la Riva, Soprano y Nilko Andreas Guarin, Guitarrista clásico, se han presentado como solistas alrededor del mundo con diferentes orquestas y en algunas de las salas mas importantes. Han unido esfuerzos para crear este ensamble con el objetivo de explorar y preservar este arte milenario, intimo y encantador, sin dejar de ser humilde ensamble de música de cámara. Su repertorio abarca músicas desde el siglo XV, hasta los periodos clásico y romántico sin dejar de lado la música contemporánea puesto que encargan nuevos trabajos a compositores modernos, para ser estrenados por el dúo, contribuyendo así a la preservación del legado milenario de este formato.

As part of its 65th anniversary celebration, Limón Dance Company, under the direction of Carla Maxwell, will perform the world premiere ofCome With Me, (inspired by the music "Ladies in White," "Bombardino," "Dreams," and "Freedom") , a collaboration between world-renowned Cuban composer/performer Paquito D'Rivera and Rodrigo Pederneiras, the principal choreographer of Grupo Corpo, Brazil's leading contemporary dance company. This full-company work, Paquito's first dance commission and Rodrigo's first commission for a US dance company, will stretch the boundaries of Limón's legacy by uniting extraordinary music and dance. The program will also include a revival of Limón's 1956 masterwork The Emperor Jones, based on the powerful Eugene O'Neill play and set to the resonant music of Heitor Villa-Lobos.Chaconne, (1942) Limón's passionate solo featuring music by J.S. Bach and La Cathedrale Engloutie (1975), Jiří Kylián's virtuosic and tranquil full-company work set to music by Debussy, will complete this abundant program. Select works during all evening performances will be performed to live music.

With his latest effort, “Ultra”, Brian Lopez has begun the work of going inside himself to find out what he has to say to the world. Ultra is the product of Brian Lopez's rock n roll heart. Yes, there are the Spanish language songs, and as all the best foreign language songs do, these transcend language barriers and move the spirit with the force of their feeling. But there is more, much more to behold on Ultra, and this reveals Lopez to be very much a product of his times, speaking to his times.

Featuring the work of the Corona Youth Music Project. The Corona Youth Music Project is based in Queens and serves its diverse community through after-school programs and intensive seminars and camps.
Now in its sixth year, Make Music New York (MMNY) is a unique festival of free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Taking place on June 21—the first day of summer—MMNY is held simultaneously with similar festivities in more than 460 cities around the world in a global celebration of music making. According to Metro New York, the event is “the largest music event ever to grace Gotham.”

Flamenco Soul offers an up-close look at the flamenco and Latin sounds coming from Spain and the Americas. Under the artistic direction of Javier Limón (Seven-Time Latin Grammy Award Winner), Flamenco Soul presents a sample of the best flamenco in the world, risky but at the same time pure, by the hands and soul of a talented, young group that sets the tempo of the sound of today.
The show will be a journey: first, a glimpse of flamenco's oldest and most original styles; an overview of its distinct paths of evolution; finally arriving at the experimental modes of today, offering a preview to flamenco's future.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts continues its eclectic 31st season with the “King of Latin Soul,” JOE BATAAN, whose magnificent voice and unique style of music have made him a global legend. Also performing will be one of the greatest Philly-soul groups of their era, BLUE MAGIC, whose string of soul hits include “We're On the Right Track,” “What's Come Over Me,” “Just Don't Want to Be Lonely” and “Spell.”

A conversation with distinguished Cuban composer Aurelio de la Vega and a performance of his music by pianist Marta Marchena and soprano Ana Marie Ketchen.

Spanish pianist and composer, Ariadna Castellanos is currently one of the top rising and most promising Flamenco artists. Ariadna merges new harmonies and modern traditions with the wild passionate essence of Flamenco creating her own language and identity. Based on her technique, acquired with classical training, and her natural sense of improvisation, Ariadna’s performances achieve the highest artistic quality.
She has recently recorded her first album for Casa Limón, which has been produced by the Grammy Award winning composer/producer Javier Limón (Paco de Lucía, Bebo Valdés, El Cigala, Buika). Ariadna has performed in such venues as the Monterrey Jazz Festival and the Puerto Rico Heineken JazzFest 2012, among others.
