DOCUMENTALES LATINOS EN EL FESTIVAL DOC NYC 2013

Tuesday, November 12, 2013 , Posted by LATINO EVENTS Y TESPIS MAGAZINE at 1:48 PM

* GREY CITY (CIDADE CINZA), Dir. Marcelo Mesquita & Guilherme – Art + Design > 9:45 PM, Wed. Nov. 20, 2013 - IFC Center.

US PREMIERE - On the streets of São Paulo, Brazil a new form of graffiti was born. Like wildfire, the works of artists like Os Gêmeos, Nunca and Nina spread through the streets of the city, and then to art galleries and museums around the world. But when a new law against visual pollution threatens to destroy their work, the artists unleash a graffiti war against the local government, giving birth to one of the most creative resistance movements in Latin American art.

* I LEARN AMERICA, Dir. Jean-Michel Dissard & Gitte Peng – Metropolis. 2:00 PM, Sun. Nov. 17, 2013 – SVA Theatre / 4:45 PM, Wed. Nov. 20, 2013 - IFC Center.

NYC PREMIERE - At the International High School at Lafayette, a Brooklyn public high school dedicated to newly arrived immigrants from all over the world, five teenagers strive to master English, adapt to families they haven’t seen in years, and create a future of their own while coming of age in a new land. Their journey is full of challenges, humor and inspiration. Through their lives, we “learn America.”

* MERCEDES SOSA: THE VOICE OF LATIN AMERICA, Dir. Rodrigo H. Vila – Sonic Cinema. 9:30 PM, Sat. Nov. 16, 2013 - SVA Theatre.

NYC PREMIERE - With millions of records sold, thousands of concerts all over the world, and countless fans (and detractors), Mercedes Sosa left behind an indelible legacy. Featuring unforgettable performances that span Sosa’s 60-year career and interviews with musicians like Pablo Milanés, Chico Buarque and David Byrne, this stirring portrait takes us on an in-depth, intimate journey through her life, revealing an artist who became one of the most influential personalities of the 20th century.

* THE TRACES OF DR. ERNESTO GUEVARA, Dir. Jorge Denti – Int’l Perspectives. 9:15 PM, Mon. Nov. 18, 2013 - IFC Center.

US PREMIERE - Drawing from Che Guevara’s personal journals, his correspondence with family and friends, and the testimony of people who knew him best, this documentary focuses on Che’s second journey across Latin America in 1952 and 1953. Retracing his itinerary and the highs and lows of his voyage up to his history-making meeting with Fidel Castro in Mexico, the film paints the definitive portrait of Guevara’s transformation into the most important revolutionary figure in the Americas.

* WEB, Dir. Michael Kleiman – Viewfinders. 2:00 PM, Sat. Nov. 16, 2013 IFC Center
 / 5:00 PM, Tue. Nov. 19, 2013 - IFC Center.

WORLD PREMIERE - Director Michael Kleiman follows Peruvian families living in remote regions as their children experience the One Laptop per Child program, gaining access to the Internet for the first time. Web considers both the benefits and complications that arise from digital connections. Alongside the poignant and sometimes humorous local stories, Kleiman interviews leading thinkers on the Internet including author Clay Shirky, Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales and One Laptop founder Nicholas Negroponte for an insightful look at our times.
