Ernesto and Yisela have moved to the capital, leaving behind their respective hometowns on the borders of Brazil and Argentina. After many years of composing songs that reflect their origins, both decide to explore new horizons and each seeks to fulfill the dream of recording a first album. While Yisela struggles to reconcile the emerging possibilities of a career in Uruguay with her plans to move to Argentina, Ernesto confronts personal conflicts that threaten to sabotage his creative passion. The film fuses the arts of documentary film and music, interweaving the songs and stories of these two young composers. With vérité cinematography and an unforgettable soundtrack, Birds of Passage explores the challenges of being a young artist and the art of searching, inside and outside of oneself.
Mexico is one of the deadliest places in the world to be a journalist. Reporters who dare to cover the country's war on drugs are all too often kidnapped or assassinated for doing their jobs. In the feature documentary, "Reportero," a veteran reporter and his colleagues at an independent newsweekly in Tijuana defy the drug cartels and corrupt government officials to continue reporting the news.

Un año más, la Muestra de Cine Ecuatoriano presenta en Nueva York algunas de las producciones cinematográficas más vanguardistas realizadas en Ecuador en los últimos años.

COMING IN AUGUST:
* El Topo > Directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. México, 1970. > Agosto 24-25 > IFC Center > TOPO.

Jodorowsky’s legendary, notorious cult hit essentially created the genre of the midnight movie — a spectacle so stunning and bizarre that normal hours couldn’t contain it. Incorporating influences from tarot to the Bible to surrealism into a mind-blowing western, Jodorowsky cast himself as the leather-clad gunman, El Topo (‘the mole’), who wanders through a desert strewn with mystical symbols on an unnamed quest, leaving blood and carnage in his wake. Declared a masterpiece by no less than John Lennon himself, EL TOPO tops even the most outrageous aesthetic experiments of its radical era and remains unmatched in its provocations and strange beauty. Long unavailable, EL TOPO is presented in a gorgeous new restoration personally overseen by Jodorowsky.
