The 50th New York Film Festival is in full swing with some of the best peliculas from cineastas worldwide, with a healthy Latino participation; the 3rd Peruvian Film Festival at Instituto Cervantes is closing soon and the film series at 92Y Tribeca continues. The festival will introduce attendees to some of the most enthusing, crafty and reflective movies about and from Latin America, Spain and Latinos in the U.S.
More than 45 titles will be presented, including award-winning short films in fiction and documentary, as well as some experimental works that resist easy classification and push at the boundaries of established structures and formats. The selections come from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Uruguay, Venezuela, and the U.S. All foreign language films are English subtitled. 
I have seen these films so far, many latinos, all highly recommended: La noche de enfrente, Tabu, Aquí y Allá, NO, Lines of Wellington, El muerto y ser feliz, The Life of Pi.
Founded in 1963, as the auteur theory and European cinematic modernism were crashing upon the shores of American film culture, the New York Film Festival continues to introduce audiences to the most exciting, innovative and accomplished works of world cinema. El Instituto Cervantes de Nueva York, en colaboración con el artista Lorry Salcedo y el Consulado General del Perú en esta ciudad, presentan por tercer año consecutivo la Muestra de Cine Peruano Contemporáneo. Como en las dos ediciones anteriores, la Muestra da a conocer una selección de las películas mas representativas de la cinematografía peruana de los últimos cincuenta años, en un formato que incluye documentales, cortometrajes y largometrajes.
Este año, el programa celebra la cinematografía Amazónica o también llamada Cine de Iquitos, ciudad enclavada en plena selva del Perú y que representa un hito importante y uno de los eventos históricos pioneros de la cinematografía peruana. Debido a la fiebre del caucho y la llegada de inmigrantes en su mayoría europeos, el interés cinematográfico empezó a inicios del siglo XX junto a la evolución del cine norteamericano en Hollywood.

Madrid, 1987 ...is a two-character story with a verbose discourse on writing, journalism, careerism, aging and politics. Shot mostly within a very constricted space, the story follows an older, celebrated journalist Miguel (José Sacristán) who meets the beautiful and coy journalism-student Angela (María Valverde) to give an interview - but becomes intent upon seducing her. They end up spending time in the most unusual manner ...discussing literature, prose and career trajectories ...gradually divulging little insights into their own selves as we start to understand the old journalist's cynicism and the young protégé's intentions.

A Whisper to a Roar tells the heroic stories of courageous democracy activists in five countries around the world – Egypt, Malaysia, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. From student leaders to prime ministers and heads of state, these activists share their compelling personal stories of struggle, past and present, with their countries’ oppressive regimes. Shot over three years and completed in February 2012, the film was inspired by the work of Stanford University’s Larry Diamond, author of “The Spirit of Democracy” and Director of Stanford University’s Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law. It was funded by The Moulay Hicham Foundation, whose benefactor, Prince Moulay Hicham of Morocco, is a renowned public intellectual and democracy advocate, particularly in regards to the Middle East.

Alex and Nica are young, in love and engaged to be married. The summer before their wedding, they are backpacking in the Caucasus Mountains in Georgia. The couple hire a local guide to lead them on a camping trek, and the three set off into a wilderness that is both overwhelmingly open and frighteningly closed. Walking for hours, they trade anecdotes, play games to pass the time of moving through space. And then, a momentary misstep, a gesture that takes only two or three seconds, a gesture that's over almost as soon as it begins. Searching for Sugar Man tells the story of the greatest '70s US rock icon who never was, how he was rediscovered in South Africa and finally became the legende he always deserved to be. A story of hope, inspiration and the power of music.

Ruben, a lonely middle-aged trucker who's picking up a load of lumber in Paraguay to take back to Buenos Aires, grudgingly agrees to take two passengers: Jacinta, a young Aboriginal mother and her five-month-old baby, Anahi. At first glance, the 1500 kilometer journey seems very long, both for Jacinta, who hopes to find work with the help of her cousin in Argentina, as well as for the surly trucker, whose routine is disrupted. But along the way, Ruben, Jacinta and Anahi slowly get to know one another, and the usually quiet Ruben gradually opens up.

But their life in the slum interferes and a tragedy shakes them, forcing them to make a choice: the unity of their family or their lifelong dream?

The 50th New York Film Festival is a milestone for NYC and for the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The NYFF, under Richard Peña, is at the top of the global cinema circuit and we are very happy to be able to cover it again for you all. Of course, we will put a latino spin on it!. Besides the NYFF, this month we have the 3rd Peruvian Film Festival at Instituto Cervantes, the film series at 92Y Tribeca and, En Cartelera: Las Acacias, Neighboring Sounds, Searching for Sugar Man, Hermano, entre otros.

La Cartelera cinematografica está variada este mes. El LatinBeat regresa al Lincoln Center y también el New York Internacional Latino Film Fest. A ellos se une Ducoweeks en el IFC de la Sexta Avenida con dos producciones latinas. Allí también pueden ver El Topo los últimos días de Agosto.
El anticipado debut de Mosquita y Mari y Hermano se lleva a cabo en el Cinema Village y Searching for SugarMan, sobre el cantautor Rodriguez y su merecido comeback es un documental para no dejar de ver. Tuve el placer de escucharlo en vivo durante el Tribeca Film Festival donde se presentó el documental. Ustedes también tendrán la oportunidad de escucharlo en concierto en el Highline Ballroom a fines de mes ( Vean Calendario de Musica). El Queens Museum continúa con el festival de verano que incluye una serie de cine. Pelotero se presenta en varias salas del país o en On Demand y aún pueden encontrar Cristiada, To Rome with Love and Savages en cartelera.

Mosquita y Mari is a coming of age story that focuses on a tender friendship between two young Chicanas. Yolanda and Mari are growing up in Huntington Park, Los Angeles and have only known loyalty to one thing: family. Growing up in immigrant households, both girls are expected to prioritize the well-being of their families. Yolanda, an only child, delivers straight A's and the hope of the American Dream while Mari, the eldest, shares economic responsibilities with her undocumented family who scrambles to make ends meet.
When Mari moves in across the street from Yolanda, they maintain their usual life routine, until an incident at school thrusts them into a friendship and into unknown territory. As their friendship grows, a yearning to explore their strange yet beautiful connection surfaces. Lost in their private world of unspoken affection, lingering gazes, and heart-felt confessions of uncertain futures, Yolanda's grades begin to slip while Mari's focus drifts away from her duties at a new job. Mounting pressures at home collide with their new-found connection, forcing them to choose between their obligations to others and staying true to themselves.

We Women Warriors bears witness to neglected human rights catastrophes and interweaves character-driven stories about female empowerment, unshakable courage, and faith in the endurance of indigenous culture.
