The school’s curriculum was based on the principle that
the crafts were equal to the traditional arts and was organized
according to a medieval-style guild system of training under the
tutelage of masters. Kandinsky conducted the Wall Painting Workshop and
Preliminary Course and taught at all three of the school’s sequential
locations in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin until 1933, when the Bauhaus was
closed due to pressure from the National Socialist (Nazi) government.

Comprised of some 50 works, Soto: Paris and Beyond, 1950–1970 is the first largescale
exhibition dedicated to this major Venezuelan artist to be held at a New York
institution in more than 35 years. Featuring works produced after Jesús Rafael Soto's
move to Paris, the show highlights his visionary investigations into notions of
movement, displacement, and instability. Drawing inspiration from optics, color theory,
and phenomenology, Soto (1923–2005) developed a radically new relationship
between the artwork and the viewer. The exhibition also explores reciprocal influences
between Soto and other members of the Parisian avant-garde—such as Yves Klein
and Jean Tinguely.

* Diego Rivera: Murals for The Museum of Modern Art > Hasta Mayo 14 >> MOMA.
In December 1931, two years after its founding, The Museum of Modern Art inaugurated a major exhibition of work by the Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Only the second retrospective presented at the young Museum, the show was wildly popular, breaking attendance records in its five-week run. Rivera’s international celebrity was based on his fame as a muralist, but murals—by definition made and fixed on site—were impossible to transport. To solve this problem, MoMA brought the artist to New York from Mexico six weeks before the opening and provided him with makeshift studio space in an empty gallery. Working around the clock with three assistants, Rivera produced five “portable murals”—freestanding frescoes with bold images commemorating events in Mexican history. After the opening, to great publicity, Rivera added three more murals, now taking on New York subjects through monumental images of the urban working class and the social stratification of the city during the Great Depression. All eight were on display for the rest of the show’s run.
* Félix Candela 1910 - 2010 > Hasta Marzo 31 > Wallach Art Gallery Columbia University > CANDELA.
Félix Candela is regarded as one the greatest
Spanish architects of the 20th century. He is celebrated for his feats
of architectural engineering that transform concrete into visual poetry
with his structural design based on hyperbolic paraboloid geometric
form. His work with thin-shell concrete roof structures broke barriers
between architecture and engineering that opened the way for other
architects such as Santiago Calatrava.
His works are located in Mexico, the United Status,
Spain, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Great
Britain and Norway. His commitment to making economic, long-lasting,
beautiful works made him the precursor of sustainable architecture.
* "Think Green","Pensar en verde" de Mónica Sarmiento Castillo > Art Inspired by Nature > Great Neck Arts Center > Hasta Mayo 31 > GREEN.
Mónica Sarmiento Castillo's distinctive chromatic and constructivist
structuring works are shown in prestigious exhibitions around the world.
The focal point of her work is the exploration of nature in painting,
sculpture, collage, drawing, and glass as viewed through the
pre-Columbian Civilizations. Forests weave together the essence of
creation and form the basis of her inspiration, reflecting an arboreal
theme.

* Luis Burgos > Back to NY > Ends March 26 > Spanish Center - "LA NACIONAL" > BURGOS.
This is a solo show by this Spanish painter from La Rioja well known for
his figures. It is their gaze, where he concentrates all the
expressions of his feelings, establishing one unavoidable dialogue with
those who contemplate his work. That connection is so strong that,
sometimes, the spectator is surprised by its depth, as the figures end
up undressing their feelings.
OUTSIDE OF NYC:
* The Art of the Ancient Americas > Hasta Mayo 20 > Walters Museum of Baltimore > AMERICAS.
An exhibition of 135 artworks from cultures that rose and fell in Mexico, Central America and Andean South America from 1200 BCE–1530 CE. Drawn from the collection of John Bourne recently gifted to the Walters, this exhibition, on view February 12–May 20, 2012, expresses each culture’s distinctive aesthetics, worldview and spiritual ideologies.
Exploring Art of the Ancient Americas touches on the performative nature of politics and religion—performance being a key mechanism for strengthening bonds of community and religious belief. The exhibition features the imaginative musical instruments used during these events and emotive portrayals of performers—from kings to commoners.
Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954)’s extraordinary life and iconic biographical paintings have earned her international renown in the world of modern art. Upon Kahlo’s death in 1954, more than 6,500 personal photographs and items belonging to her and husband/artist Diego Rivera were sealed and put in storage. For more than half a century this great collection of personal memorabilia remained hidden from the public. In 2007 this collection was opened and Mexican photographer and curator Pablo Ortiz Monasterio inventoried and catalogued 240 images to create the Frida Kahlo: Her Photos exhibition.
