TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL: PELICULAS LATINAS y Highlights.

Celebrando sus 10 años, el Festival Tribeca de Cine se ha incorporado al paisaje cultural de la ciudad y se sigue ganando un puesto merecido en el escena mundial. Su enfoque sigue siendo el nuevo cine y el cine independiente. Y este año lo estoy cubriendo en vivo! Ya he visto varias de las películas que participarán y aqui les traigo mis impresiones.
Este año el festival comienza con la proyección gratuita de “The Union”, de Cameron Crowe el 20 de Abril en The World Financial Plaza. "The Union" is a look at the making of Elton John and Leon Russell's collaborative album, produced by T-Bone Burnett. El Festival termina con "Newlyweds" de Edward Burns, 'humor and sharp insights into modern relationships' y totalmente filmada en Nueva York. Son en total 47 estrenos y 104 los directores que estarán presentes.
“No comenzó como un festival tradicional,” dijo Jane Rosenthal, una de los fundadores del festival y el chief executive, en una entrevista reciente para el NYT, “Mi meta are traer a la gente de nuevo a downtown.” Cada año más y más gente asiste a la cita. A pasarla bien en downtown!.

* Paraisos Artificiales:
Directed by Yulene Olaizola, written by Yulene Olaizola and Fernando del Razo. (Mexico) – Narrative.
This beautifully rendered atmospheric story captures a young woman addicted to heroin trying to get clean at a rundown resort on the Mexican Gulf Coast. There she meets a local character and the two begin a unique rapport. First-time narrative filmmaker Yulene Olaizola subverts the conventional addict story and imbues her main characters with a complexity and honesty that inspires this delicate and resonant journey of two old souls. In Spanish with English subtitles.

When successful boxer Octavio falls in love with kitchen hand Hugo, they move from their small-town homes in the south of Chile to capital city Santiago to protect their taboo relationship. A handsome cast and evocative cinematography offer a sexy, subtle film that evokes hits like The Wrestler and Brokeback Mountain.

The final years in the life of legendary bandit Butch Cassidy are shrouded in mystery, from his rumored death in a Bolivian military standoff, to his escape from South America to die quietly on a Nevada ranch the 1930s. In Mateo Gil's intimate and adventurous Western, a reimagined and aged Butch Cassidy (Sam Shepard) is living under the assumed name James Blackthorn in a secluded village in Bolivia 20 years after his disappearance in 1908. Surviving humbly off the land and finding occasional comforts with a local woman, Yana (Magaly Solier, The Milk of Sorrow), he longs to end his personal exile and return to the US to see his family. Reluctantly joining forces with a Spanish mine robber (Eduardo Noriega) who promises him a cut of the loot, Blackthorn sets out on one final adventure… and discovers he's not the only one harboring a deep secret.
Mateo Gil makes a solid English-language debut with this sublimely shot and well acted tale set in the remarkable landscapes of Bolivia. Sam Shepard gives a riveting performance as the weathered, mysterious, and unsentimental Blackthorn, gracefully revitalizing the legend of history's favorite outlaw.

* Neon Flesh. De Paco Cabezas. (Spain) - Narrative.
Full of style and wild humor, Neon Flesh is a high-energy crime thriller centered around Ricky and the underground world that he lives in. His prostitute mother, Pura, abandoned him when he was 12. Now a young man, he wants to honor her by opening up a brothel when she is released from prison. For help he enlists a pimp, his junkie girlfriend, and a transsexual who believes that she's royalty, but when he finally picks Mom up from the hospital, she is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's and not too impressed with his gift. Worse, the location Ricky chose for the brothel encroaches on ruthless thug El Chino's domain….
Writer/director Paco Cabezas creatively maneuvers his various underworld characters and their storylines through moments of outrageousness and downright sleaziness, but he's always able to integrate compassion toward the motley crew. Led by Mario Casas as Ricky, the talented and good-looking cast brings a nice sentimentality to their roles as people on the fringe looking for connections with others.

* Maria, My Love. De Jasmine McGlade Chazelle (USA) - Narrative
Ana is a young woman trying to reimagine her life after her mother's death during the course of one California spring. Filled with resentment over her father's mistakes, Ana feels disconnected from herself and everyone around her. Swept up by new romance and a warm reunion with her half-sister, Ana is so taken by the newfound support and love in her life that she sets out to find someone—anyone other than herself—to help. She finds a volunteer project in Maria, a reclusive hoarder who has alienated her own family with her compulsive behavior. As the two become unlikely friends and confidantes, Ana finds herself in an emotionally complex relationship that reveals some uncomfortable truths about herself.
First-time writer/director Jasmine McGlade Chazelle (producer of Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, TFF '09) returns to the Festival with a vivid and authentic portrait of grief through a young woman's journey to find her own way, inspired by supporting actress Lauren Fales' life. Judy Marte (Raising Victor Vargas) delivers a naturalistic performance as Ana and strikes chemistry with two-time Golden Globe winner and Academy Award® nominee Karen Black as Maria.
