The Americas Film Festival of new York is about to start with a rich selection of películas from all over the Americas (y del otro lado del charco, también). Por si fuera poco, most of the films and events are free!. Indeed, a great opportunity to catch up or explore some of the best cinema from our beloved continent. So many times the fact that we all are Americans gets obscured or is treated as irrelevant. Well, is not. And I'm glad the Americas Film Festival celebrates what unites us all through the art of filmmaking.
Opening night will take place at Instituto Cervantes on June 22 with Ocho Apellidos Vascos (Spanish Affair) directed by Emilio Martinez Lázaro. The closing night and award ceremony takes place on June 26 with THE EMBARGO PROJECT, five short films by Canadian indigenous women. There are 4 Programs for the Shorts in Competition totaling about 40 shorts: Fiction, Documentary, Animation and Experimental and 17 features spanning the whole continent.
These are the highlights to look for:
- WORDS OF REVOLUTION by Junior Gonzalez, U.S.
- SERRAT & SABINA: EL SÍMBOLO Y EL CUATE by Francesc Relea, Spain-Mexico.
- OMARA: CUBA by Lester Hamlet, Cuba.
- DISRUPTION by Pamela Yates, U.S.-Brazil-Colombia-Peru.
